I thought it was cute and good representation for asexuality. Wasn‘t a fan of her best friend, but other than that, it was cool to see a black asexual biromantic MC

Ok, ok I have a lot of feelings about this book. First off I have never related more to a character or book. This made me feel so warm inside and I did want to squee all the way through it

It's a light hearted book that actually goes into asexuality and identity, healthy communication, loving yourself and letting other people love you, and deconstructing societal norms

Great book, would recommend

I'm joining @Andrew65 in #12Booksof2021, sharing the remaining months all at once! This book was a huge surprise for me. I've never read a book about an ace character before, and it was amazing reading someone's experience that is similar to mine (I'm a-spec too). The writing is also really fun, and I adored the characters. Bonus points for librarians. #LGBTQ #2021WrapUp

I finally finished my August book stack drawing! These are most of the books I read in August, minus comic issues and picture books. The stack also combined all of the Shortcake volumes. My favorite from this month would have to be Let‘s Talk About Love.

I think I‘ll skip September and October for now so that I can start my November stack and hopefully not fall as far behind this time!

I absolutely adored this book. I've been wanting a book with ace representation for a while because I realized I've never read one, which is silly because I fall somewhere on the asexual/graysexual/demisexual spectrum. I didn't expect to see my experiences so vividly portrayed in Alice. It was painful at times, validating at others, and such a delightful read the whole way through. Glad I'm not the only ace who often feels broken but not broken.

Kenyazero I just remembered there's an ace character in The Diviners, and even though Mr. Frosty Pants was terrible it also had a demisexual character... so this isn't the first book with ace rep I've read, just the most impactful! 3y

I enjoyed this book for so many reasons, but most importantly, it really goes in depth about asexuality. Overall, this is a cute and lighthearted book that simultaneously makes serious statements about identity and asexuality. This is definitely a book that everyone should read, and I would especially recommend it for those who are looking to read more books with ace characters!

Not obsessed with this book at all 😂😂😂😂 First read on audio last year, then again a few months later because I needed my fluff book again, then bought the paperback and read it AGAIN a few months after that. I later bought the audio, and just now, to complete the collection, I bought the ebook cuz why the hell not, and it's on sale 😬

I got to a restaurant way early for the meet up, so I ordered a beer and started this book since I left my current reads at home and DAMN. Three pages in and I had tears in my eyes. I‘ll say it again: representation matters. I‘m shook to see someone like me in print, to read the same experiences I had in college. 👏

Although written in the third person, Claire Kann‘s style makes the narrative feel personal, and her chatty voice is filled with bracketed asides. As a character, Alice is well-defined beyond her asexuality. She loves television, and her hobby is writing critical essays about her favourite programs. She loves food, but can‘t cook to save her life.

I was excited to read this book because it features an asexual main character. We get in-depth descriptions of how Alice feels about sex. To the point where I felt the author was trying to educate the reader about asexuality at the expense of a plot. This is a young adult book and the immaturity Alice and her friends really shines through. I loved her romance with Takumi, but hated her childish relationship with her best friend. 3 stars.

I am always excited for asexual rep, but as an ace person myself the early going of this book was a bit explain-y. Then, 50 pages in, the MC's best friend suggests fucking someone and I gotta say, it rubbed me the wrong way. And while they did eventually discuss grey-ace as a possible orientation, I don't love that this knowledge comes from a non-ace person. I dunno, this book is not for me.

Nice and slow following a college student trying to make self of where she is going attraction wise. I connected with Alice in this way the struggles she has with her friends halfway through felt so solid in reality that it made me rethink my relationship with a couple friends over the importance of the same issue

My third book finished today! This book is so unique, with such interesting representation. As someone who has recently come to terms with being on the asexuality spectrum, reading a romance book about an ace main character was a great experience. I would recommend it to everyone to help you understand. But also, Takumi and Alice have the sweetest relationship in the world and I love them! All the character relationships here are great ❤️

Megabooks I‘m on the ace spectrum, too, and am in the process of coming out. This is on my TBR. 💙 5y

I want to have strong feelings about this, but I just... don‘t. In theory, I love the asexual rep, the cuteness, the intersectionality, and the variety of relationships Alice navigates. In practice, I‘m struggling to drum up some concrete reactions I can share with you.

I guess I think this is a good early days effort for mainstream ace fiction, but I hope the books that come after it will hit me harder on a personal level.

suzisteffen SAME. I kept thinking, “This is going to become awesome at some point, right?” But ... nope. 5y

Meh. I finished this only a couple of weeks ago and I had to look up the description to remind myself what it was about. Not a good sign.

I like that asexual teens can find representation here, but Alice's relationships were her friends and family are strange (and borderline abusive), and the "cute" parenthetical phrases got old fast. And don't get me started on how library work is portrayed. The cover is great through!

8little_paws Yeah I hated the best friend!!! 5y
ferskner @8little_paws Right??? And her family was so awful! Alice's cutesy-ness grated on me too, though. I kept forgetting I was reading about an adult and imagined her as a 15 year old. 5y

2/5⭐ I appreciated what this book tried to do, but not how. The characters were annoying. Public library work is consistently described as boring & easy, which is aggravatingly false. Multiple times Alice's boss inappropriately crossed boundaries, none called out. Alice's family's horrible treatment of her is passed off as love.

I did like the exploration of asexuality and positive portrayal of therapy. #projectnew #blackathon #contemporaryathon

CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Oh no, that's so annoying to hear about the depiction of public library work. Arg!! 5y

This may be considered a bit of a *SPOILER* since it takes Alice a long time to say the right words, but I just love this quote. Asexuality isn't one thing, and I don't exactly share her exact hesitations, but this is the kind of book I wish were available to me growing up.
More generally, the book is pretty great. A bit slow at the start (I almost started skimming), but it gets good and provide a unique plot structure that avoids many cliches.

I‘m actually blown away by the ace rep in this book. The conversations between the characters were so open and positive and that was amazing to see. And I love how going to therapy was shown in a positive light, sometimes ya can struggle with that. I will say though that is book was WAY too fluffy for my liking 😂 but it was short so that can be forgiven

A very #diverse and #intersectional novel. Alice is #black, #bisexual, and #asexual. There‘s a big age gap between her and her siblings, and her parents and siblings keep trying to run her life. Alice just wants to be Alice, loved, accepted, and understood for just being her. Luckily, she‘s got a couple of great friends, a new counselor, and there‘s a new employee at the #library who just might be the one to accept her as she is. A sweet read.

This week's library haul. I'm excited LET'S TALK ABOUT LOVE was on the shelf! Bring on the asexual romance!

I'm glad they finally bought some Sailor Moon, too. I mostly ignored the original when I was a kid because every episode I sampled ended with Tuxedo Mask saving the helpless girls and I was NOT about that life, but I've read enough media crit since then to think I got the wrong impression. Hopefully Crystal's good.

Alice has a crush on a boy, doesn't know what she wants to major in at college, and is in an ongoing fight with her two best friends who happen to be a couple. Alice is also asexual and although she is comfortable with who she is, she is less comfortable in telling people. It's diverse and intersectional. It is slow in parts but a overall a good debut novel.
