The Mountain Story
The Mountain Story: A Novel | Lori Lansens
Four lost hikers are about to discover theyre capable of something extraordinary. Nola has gone up the mountain to commemorate her wedding anniversary, the first since her beloved husband passed. Blonde, stick-thin Bridget is training for a triathalon. Vonn is working out her teenage rebellion at eight thousand feet, driven by family obligation and the urge to escape her mistakes. Still reeling from the tragic accident that robbed him of his best friend, Wolf Truly is the only experienced hiker among them, but he has come to the cliffs on his eighteenth birthday without food or supplies because he plans to take his own life. When a series of missteps strands this unusual group together in the wilderness, they soon realize that their only defense against the brutality of nature is one another. As one day without rescue spirals dramatically into the next, and misadventure turns to nightmare, these four broken souls begin to form an inextricable bond, pushing themselves and one another further than they ever could have dreamed possible. The three who make it home alive will be forever changed by their harrowing days on the mountain. From the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls, The Mountain Story is a fast-paced, suspenseful adventure and a gorgeous tribute to the resilience of the human spirit. Braving a landscape both unforgivingly harsh and breathtakingly beautiful, Nola, Bridget, Vonn, and Wolf find themselves faced with an impossible question: How much will they sacrifice for a stranger?

Both a coming-of-age character study and a survival adventure story, I felt like this book veered a bit into the ridiculous trying to pack in every survival scenario possible. I don‘t want to give any spoilers, but there was a twist at the end that really threw me for a loop. Overall entertaining enough, 3.75 stars. Photo is one I took in Crested Butte, CO, an absolutely gorgeous mountain town.

A good survival story of 4 people lost on a mountain with little hope of a rescue. The book revolves around learning about the individuals and their backstories more than the actual attempts to escape the habitat they are trapped in. Probably a good thing as those moments of ‘action‘ became really repetitive for me.

Last book of 2019 was the tagged book - The Mountain Story by Lori Lansens. First book of 2020 is He Said / She Said by Erin Kelly. Two very different books but two enjoyable reads.

Managed to squeeze in The Mountain Story as one last read in 2019. Four hikers get lost on a mountain and as much as it is a survival story it is also focused quite a bit on the characters themselves (especially Wolf's backstory). The first 1/3 of the book was hard to get through but it picked up from there and although not my favourite Lori Lansens book I still enjoyed it.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through The Mountain Story as I try to read one more book by the end of the year. I am enjoying the book so far but I can't say that I'm enjoying it as much as I liked The Girls and Rush Home Road by Lori Lansens. Still a lot of reading left for the book to pick up though.

The #mardybum count is sky high in this book. Granted, being stuck on a mountain for five days without adequate food, water, or clothing would test anyone. The four characters stranded together were interesting enough, albeit some of them (BRIDGET) were super annoying and the book itself had a trite tone that was disappointing. #ayupaugust #darguschmarkupbookclub

I‘m surprised at the great reviews this book gets. It is written like it should be YA. I am going to rate this 5🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄rolls for all the ridiculous things the author wrote. The narrator had the keenest sense of smell of anyone ever - he could smell rotting fish in a pond miles away. 🙄

We are reading this in our family mark up book club so the comments should get interesting. I laughed out loud so many times thanks to comments by @emilyhaldi

Itchyfeetreader I read this when I went to Palm Springs and really struggled to find anything in it I liked (the book not Palm Springs 😂😂) 6y
mreads Narrator sounds like Gus from the show Psych, he was a "supersniffer"? 6y
mcctrish I love the idea of sharing the book with comments written in. I found Song of Achilles written YA and I don‘t mean that negatively but I wasn‘t expecting it to be that way so it was like the elephant in the room while I read it 🤣 6y

LeahBergen I enjoyed another one by this author (hmmm 🤔 ... maybe that one felt a bit YA?) but a few of my friends really disliked this one (and so I avoided it). 6y
emilyhaldi Lololol!! The irony of the situation is that I almost want to reread this so I can see all of the comments 😂 6y
Mdargusch It will be fun to read the comments @emilyhaldi 🤩 6y
Mdargusch Super sniffer is the perfect description @mreads 6y
Mdargusch I‘m glad I‘m not alone @Itchyfeetreader - although I did read to the end to see what happened. 6y
Mdargusch I like YA but I don‘t like adult fiction written like YA @mcctrish 6y
Mdargusch I can‘t believe all the 5⭐️ reviews @LeahBergen 🤷🏼‍♀️ I‘m in the minority here. 6y
erzascarletbookgasm Ha! I like you gave it eye-rolling ratings. 6y
Zelma @LeahBergen her earlier book was The Girls, which I really liked. 6y
LeahBergen @Zelma Yep, that was the one I really enjoyed! 6y
Mdargusch Hmmm. Not sure whether I would try another of her books now. 🤔 @LeahBergen @Zelma 6y
Mdargusch I realized I was constantly thinking ugh through this book so I decided I‘ve been reading a few books where I just roll my eyes @erzascarletbookgasm and now I will be rating books that way. 😁 6y

LeahBergen Does the margin-writing ever get rude? 😆 6y
Reviewsbylola It gets very funny and there are a lot of curse words. 😂😂 @LeahBergen 6y
emilyhaldi @LeahBergen my book required a fair amount of expletives. But things get really interesting once @Meredith3 gets involved... her commentary is on another level!! 6y
LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola @emilyhaldi I‘m jealous now! 😆😆 And please don‘t choose an Austen novel next ... poor Jane would be whirling in her grave at @Meredith3 ‘s commentary. 😆😆 6y
Reviewsbylola Omg I don‘t think @Meredith3 could do more Jane!! 🤣 @LeahBergen 6y

This sounds dark, honest , and terrifying.

Solid thriller! I‘m a sucker for survival and wilderness stories. This is much more character-driven than I was expecting, and I didn‘t feel the peril of their situation as I have reading non-fiction with this sort of subject matter, I was still thoroughly entertained. Lansens is a good, engaging storyteller.

While I don't put too much emphasis on "stars" on Litsy, I rate the shit out of books on Goodreads. I hardly ever give anything 5 stars, but this book made the cut. Maybe it's because it's getting cooler and that makes me happy. Maybe it's because I am a sucker for survival fiction. Either way, I really enjoyed the story of Wolf. Wolf decides to end his life on the mountain, but he soon finds himself lost on the mountain with three women.

Good morning/afternoon/evening Littens! I hope everyone is having a great day, or is at least surviving a horrible one (you can do it!!!). Just wanted to share another #currentlyreading with you all. I'm not very far into this one, but I'm definitely intrigued. The novel is written by a man named Wolf. When he was 18, he became stranded on a mountain with 3 women. He is writing the story down for his son, who is now 18. Good so far :)

Lansens is a brilliant writer and has created more unforgettable characters - Wolf, Vonn, Bridget, and Nola. This story is moving, heart-stopping, enthralling, and brilliantly penned. It was a huge undertaking and she pulled it off.

Her writing never disappoints. This page-turner is filled with hope and resilience of the human spirit. I couldn't read it fast enough—I highly recommend it!

I love all of them. My TBR is close to half paperback and half hardcover. I read my KOBO sort of inconsistently but really enjoy ebooks as well. If it is a series, I do like to read them all in the same format. @BookishGirl06

BookishGirl06 Thanks :) 7y
Reecaspieces Ok my thoughts... I prefer ereaders...gasp....here is why. I live an hour from the nearest bookstore...another gasp...so with an ereader I hold a book store in my hand. Also, I am old...or getting there, I don't sleep very much. So, I can open my ereader and never get out of bed and read without disturbing hubby. If I am reading a book...which i much prefer, I have to get out of bed...oh dear..just my thoughts..plus I can change font size. 7y
Reagan Haha @Reecaspieces I completely understand! I love the ease of the ereader, so many options in my pocket and I too can then read in bed without disturbing my husband. It's a huge bonus. 7y

Opening line: "A person has to have lived a little to appreciate a survival story". And boy, is this a great one. Intertwining the past and present to create characters you really care about. Lansens describes the setting in a way that places the reader in the moment... for better or worse.

The Mountain Story was my favorite book of 2015. It's a story of survival in every sense of the word. Immediately compelling, once I started I couldn't put it down. This book stayed with me for a long time after I finished reading it. Loss, regret, resiliency, love, family. All explored beautifully.
