Summertime has finally arrived in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and Hannah Swensen, owner of The Cookie Jar bakery, is looking forward to warm, lazy days, eating ice cream, and sharing picnics with friends. But when a family reunion takes a deadly turn, it's up to Hannah to find a killer. . . Between baking up a storm for The Cookie Jar and unraveling the mystery of her cat Moishe's recent strange behavior, Hannah Swensen has a lot on her plate. But she'll always make time for her business partner, Lisa, who's in the midst of preparing for a big family reunion. Everyone is delighted when Lisa's long-lost uncle makes a surprise appearance. No one has heard from Gus in twenty-five years--and his arrival has everyone buzzing with excitement. Uncle Gus is immediately the hit of the reunion, telling tales of his great success and flashing money for all to see. He's almost as popular as Hannah's scrumptious carrot cake, which is also Gus's favorite dessert. But the next morning, as the whole family gathers for the group photo, one person is missing. Hannah offers to track down Uncle Gus, but her search leads to a shocking find. Over by the bar at the pavilion, she spots two slices of her infamous carrot cake, frosting-side down on the floor--and Gus's corpse with an ice pick jutting out of his chest! A little snooping reveals that not everyone was celebrating Gus's return. And when Hannah unearths more secrets from Gus's past, she discovers even more people with an axe to grind. Now Hannah's got to sift through a long list of suspects to find a killer--even if it could mean a recipe for her own demise. . . Includes 12 original dessert recipes for you to try!

I had no idea this idiom has such racist origins. Learn something new everyday.

Eggs I did not know this 🍰 7mo
CSeydel I‘m not sure that‘s true. That may be the origin of the idiom “cake walk” for something easy, but I thought the first known reference to “piece of cake” was Ogden Nash. 7mo
CSeydel (Also, slavery had ended by the 1870s) 7mo

JuliaTheBookNerd @CSeydel from what I found the origin is like many idioms where there are 2 or more stories of the origin. Ogden Nash is the other well known origin. No one know which one is the true origin. 7mo
JuliaTheBookNerd @CSeydel There is also an origin story for this idiom that it originated in the Royal Air Force in the 1930s 🤷🏻‍♀️ Not sure which one is true but I went with the earliest reference origin 7mo
CSeydel Is there a historical source for the slave cake walk origin? Sometimes people get confused and post info on websites that isn‘t entirely accurate. I suppose it‘s the “1870s” error that is making me doubt. 7mo

#page2screen I‘m a fan of the adaptation and hope they continue making more.

Susanita Is it me, or does the cover not really match the title? 10mo
tpixie Is this a book cover? Or a movie cover? 10mo
tpixie @Susanita you‘re right! It doesn‘t match! 10mo

tpixie @Sharpeipup thanks! ( the guy Cameron Matteson used to be on all my children and is now on General Hospital and I thought it would be fun if it were a Book cover too, instead of just a movie poster- I know he does a lot of those hallmark movies) for that matter, the female used to be on a soap also- I think days of our life! I may have stopped reading the books, but ill@never stop watching the movies 🤣 Hannah is way more likable in the movies! #imstillteamNorman

TEArificbooks I am team Norman all the way, but if she picked Norman then she wouldn‘t have all those inside information clues to solve the crime (in the show at least) 11mo
BarkingMadRead @TEArificbooks so true 🤣 11mo
BarkingMadRead @TEArificbooks I will say, Mike is also more likable in the movies. He was a bit of a cheat in the books 🤣🤣 11mo

Mehso-so

Continuing my post-hospital catch-up. Like the other one in this series I reviewed, I felt that the author‘s lack of real baking knowledge made Hannah‘s character unbelievable. She tries to pepper the book with baking facts and recipes but they are at best rudimentary and at worst downright incorrect.

Finished this easily on vacation. It has quite a few recipes I want to try. I just love Hannah‘s town and wish they would do more movies. It‘s so easy to picture their faces during the reading!

Pickpick

Of the Hannah mysteries, this one is ok, not one of my favorites.

Newlyweds Lisa and Herb look forward to a family reunion with their new families. The surprise reappearance of Herb‘s long lost uncle, Gus, is a happy - and painful - event. Unfortunately, Gus‘ resurfacing revives the past, and those old memories can result in murder.

Mike promises to investigate WITH Hannah 🙄, and Norman becomes 007 going undercover in Atlantic City. 😄

“Try adding raisins!” suggests the package. Ok, Chef Hines, I‘m going to add some sultanas and a shot of Goslings black seal. #oneup #joinin

Lreads How did it turn out? 5y
mrsmarch @QuietlyLaura Delicious! I increased the recommended liquid from 2 Tbsp water to 3 Tbsp water + 1 Tbsp rum to account for the dryness of the Tbsp or so of raisins I added. Also increased the cook time from 1m10s to 1m20s. Still let it sit in the microwave for 2m afterward. 5y

#MarchMunchies #CarrotCake

I‘m pushing it here, but this photo is of the carrot cake made at my favorite local cafe Twig & Sparrow.

Right now I‘d love to devour a slice with a flat white and a good book.🥕🍰

#MarchMunchies Day 3: Carrot Cake
The titles of Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swenson Mysteries match well with some of the prompts in this challenge. I haven't read any of the books in the series but I do watch Murder She Baked, which is based on the series

Gissy They sound interesting 6y

I'm admittedly a big fan of the Murder, She Baked series by Joanne Fluke. It's my guilty pleasure. I collect them amidst the difficulty to get a copy of any of her works in Manila. Went as far as to promise to only read them if they're given as gifts or bought second hand. This is one of the lucky instances where I got to grab a copy from a used bookstore after a long, long while. YAY! Hope it's good! 😆

CoffeeCatsBooks Hmm...now I want carrot cake! 7y
monkeygirlsmama I own a bunch of this series and really need to catch up. Haven't read this particular one yet. 7y
mabell It's so fun to find a book in a series you like that don't pop up often. I look for the Murder She Baked too, and the Donna Andrews' Meg series 7y
