I finally read Boxers and Saints by Gene Luen Yang! I ended up really loving both books, although I did wish the second book was a touch longer. It was a fascinating story about a time and place (1899 China) I only have basic background knowledge of, and I didn't feel lost. It also made both sides really sympathetic. Overall, they are a moving and engaging pair of books that I would definitely recommend.

His narrative and accessible comic panels would definitely appeal to young readers‘ fascination with comics and thirst for action, with a blend of folk tale, mysticism, and magical realism thrown into the mix. Graphic novel about a revolution in China in the 1890's. Loved the art work and it told a complex account of events alongside some magical elements. Well worth a read!

I read my first book by Gene Luen Yang earlier this year, and I loved it! So I was very excited to see both of these at my local public library. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is complex and filled with characters that are morally ambiguous. A trait that I normally don‘t care for as it often comes off as contrived and artificial. But with this author seems genuine and makes the world feel more true to reality.

A question for my fellow littens who are participating in the #Goodreads reading challenge... If you buy books as a set but they're also available individually, like Boxers and Saints or March, and you read the books, do you count each book individually or do you just count the whole set for your reading challenge stats??

Since I finished all of the books in my last library haul, I figured it was time to go and get some more! Found some pretty exciting things!!! 📚📚📚

My first #eclecticreadathon book. I am starting with a graphic novel for some early success. lol. I will likely be asleep soon. The last two days have been long ones for me.

An interesting #duology set in the #tumultous times of 1898 in #China. Boxers is a story of a rebel named Little Bao during #TheBoxerRebellion. Saints is a story about Four-Girl (a.k.a Vibiana after her conversion to Christianity). Went to a local VA library comic con today with @jmtrivera which was awesome. We met Gene Luen Yang and I got both of these books signed! I loved trying these small cons and supporting local libraries and comic book stores.

I *think* the Boxer Rebellion was mentioned in a school history book. Briefly. So glad I read these companion volumes to enlighten me. Yang shows both sides of the Boxer Rebellion, and as always when a nation fights itself, neither side is completely blameless. He does such a great job showing the growth of both MCs and how they come to care about their side of the story. Saints was particularly heartbreaking. #fillinggapsineducation

These two graphic novels were excellent. The way they tied into each other and how it all concluded in Saints broke my heart. Each book gives a different perspective on the Boxer Rebellion. These were my pick for the #Readharder2017 challenge for the category of spiritual journey by a POC. ❤❤❤❤❤

These were excellent and almost painfully relevant. Gene Luen Yang portrays universal, immortal themes like faith, family, guilt, and duty with great honesty. Under his pen, no one is blameless, but the best of intentions can look very different through the eyes of another. This should be in classrooms all over the world and I hope it is.

I'm extremely late to the party on what have now become classics of the medium, but I'm very excited to finally be reading some Gene Luen Yang. I saw him speak this past spring at BEA and knew that the time would come for me to read everything he had ever written/will ever write!

This was my first time reading a graphic novel and let me say I absolutely loved it. Such a different experience but so awesome. This set tells the same story from two perspectives. Amazing. I am hooked.

I rarely give myself the luxury of graphic novels so I enjoyed these two quite a bit. There were a few things I didn't understand and I take blame for not knowing more about Chinese culture. I like Saints more, maybe because I read Boxers first, but I liked the correlation with Joan of Arc's story.

Funny, captivating, bittersweet, and heartbreaking. Gene Luen Yang is a brilliant artist who takes storytelling into a different level. One minute you're laughing, and before you know it, you pull yourself away from the story and shake your head. In your mind, you ask, "Wait, did that just happen?"

A realistic yet easily digestible story about the Boxer Rebellion in China at the turn of the 20th century. It's as good as all your friends say it is.
