Boxers & Saints Boxed Set Edition One of the greatest comics storytellers alive brings all his formidable talents to bear in this astonishing new work. In two volumes,Boxers & Saints tells two parallel stories. The first is of Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy whose village is abused and plundered by Westerners claiming the role of missionaries. Little Bao, inspired by visions of the Chinese gods, joins a violent uprising against the Western interlopers. Against all odds, their grass-roots rebellion is successful. But in the second volume, Yang lays out the opposite side of the conflict. A girl whose village has no place for her is taken in by Christian missionaries and finds, for the first time, a home with them. As the Boxer Rebellion gains momentum, Vibiana must decide whether to abandon her Christian friends or to commit herself fully to Christianity. Boxers & Saints is one of the most ambitious graphic novels First Second has ever published. It offers a penetrating insight into not only one of the most controversial episodes of modern Chinese history, but into the very core of our human nature. Gene Luen Yang is rightly called a master of the comics form, and this book will cement that reputation. This boxed set includes the trade paperbackBoxers as well as the trade paperbackSaints, packaged together in one slipcase. Two linked graphic novels that tells of faith and revolution during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. Blurb... “on the one side we have Little Bao, a Chinese peasant boy who loses his village to Westerners and turns to traditional Chinese gods to give him strength in fighting back. On the other side there is Vibiana, a young girl taken in by Christian missionaries, who draws her strength from visions of Joan of Arc.”

Graphic novel about Boxer Rebellion. Bao‘s childhood experience makes him want to fight “foreign devils” and their Christian converts in China. Vibiana‘s experience of an abusive family draws her toward Christianity. Both teens on a journey to understand how they are meant to live. History, spirituality and morality in 2 brilliant stories that intersect. https://cannonballread.com/2019/01/american-born-chinese-and-boxers-and-saints-e...

#WinterWonderland Day 26: Yang managed to bring history to life and made it palatable to a contemporary audience in #TheBoxer(s) and Saints. His narrative and accessible comic panels would definitely appeal to young readers‘ fascination with comics and thirst for action, with a blend of folk tale, mysticism, and magical realism thrown into the mix. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-8gL

Graphic novel about a revolution in China in the 1890's. Loved the art work and it told a complex account of events alongside some magical elements. Well worth a read!

I read my first book by Gene Luen Yang earlier this year, and I loved it! So I was very excited to see both of these at my local public library. The illustrations are beautiful, and the story is complex and filled with characters that are morally ambiguous. A trait that I normally don‘t care for as it often comes off as contrived and artificial. But with this author seems genuine and makes the world feel more true to reality.

A question for my fellow littens who are participating in the #Goodreads reading challenge... If you buy books as a set but they're also available individually, like Boxers and Saints or March, and you read the books, do you count each book individually or do you just count the whole set for your reading challenge stats??

Zelma Each book is separate. I mean, the Harry Potter series is available as a box set and I would never consider that one book. 2y
No_One Definitely separate books! 😊 2y
Theresa @Zelma @No_One Thank you! You have alleviated my Catholic guilt about possibly cheating, and improved my progress on my Goodreads reading challenge because I counted the March trilogy box set as 1 & almost did the same with Boxers & Saints. 2y

No_One @Theresa haha! I'm not Catholic, but I did ask friends if my audiobooks from Audible counted as "reads" for Goodreads. I received a resounding "YES!". I was so happy, because I don't have a lot of time to read paper books. ? 2y
Theresa @No_One I listen to a lot of audiobooks so they better count!! 😂😂 2y
tjwill Definitely separate! And audiobooks count too! (edited) 2y
EvieBee I count them individually and audiobooks I change to book format so I get a page count that is accurate at the end of the year. (edited) 2y
No_One @Theresa 👍😀 2y
Theresa @EvieBee Ooh, I hadn't thought of the book format/page count thing. I try to match the ISBN (or whatever # for ebook or audiobook) of the format I read, but I may need to change. 2y
Theresa @tjwill Yay! I like the way you think! 2y

One thing I love about being a podcaster is how things come together in what feels like a magical way sometimes. Themes emerge, connections appear, and bookish conversations make my day. Here's a quick shot of tonight's recording although this episode doesn't post until October 10!

An interesting #duology set in the #tumultous times of 1898 in #China. Boxers is a story of a rebel named Little Bao during #TheBoxerRebellion. Saints is a story about Four-Girl (a.k.a Vibiana after her conversion to Christianity). At one point, they both met and made choices which altered their lives. #historicalfiction #readanythingandeverything #bibliophage #readforlife #lovereading #read150 #gratefulforlibrary #calgarylibrary

I *think* the Boxer Rebellion was mentioned in a school history book. Briefly. So glad I read these companion volumes to enlighten me. Yang shows both sides of the Boxer Rebellion, and as always when a nation fights itself, neither side is completely blameless. He does such a great job showing the growth of both MCs and how they come to care about their side of the story. Saints was particularly heartbreaking. #fillinggapsineducation

AmandaL I really liked these two too! 3y
Peddler410 I bought Saints for one of my schools -- already had Boxers. My daughter, 8, read Saints before I could stop her. A lot of it she didn't understand but we had a good conversation about the story. She's in a Chinese Immersion program so we will be revisiting this selection when she gets to middle school. 3y

Visiting California means I get to visit my favourite bookstore The Last Bookstore! I'm flying home with these 10 babies! Do you guys have a favourite bookstore you love to visit when you're in another city??

JulietteGF When I come back home, in France, there are several places I love to go to. An indie book store in the city nearby. A used book store at the metro station St Michel, sometimes I go to WH Smith on rivoli street, or to Shakespeare & co downtown Paris... 3y
elkeo_TheBookDragon Nice #bookhaul! I have seen photos only of Last Bookstore - it looks incredible!! (edited) 3y

These two graphic novels were excellent. The way they tied into each other and how it all concluded in Saints broke my heart. Each book gives a different perspective on the Boxer Rebellion. These were my pick for the #Readharder2017 challenge for the category of spiritual journey by a POC. ❤❤❤❤❤

These were excellent and almost painfully relevant. Gene Luen Yang portrays universal, immortal themes like faith, family, guilt, and duty with great honesty. Under his pen, no one is blameless, but the best of intentions can look very different through the eyes of another. This should be in classrooms all over the world and I hope it is.

Spoiler alert: when people of one land go to war against each other because one group no longer believes the same thing as the other, nobody is right, no one is blameless, and no one wins.

I rarely give myself the luxury of graphic novels so I enjoyed these two quite a bit. There were a few things I didn't understand and I take blame for not knowing more about Chinese culture. I like Saints more, maybe because I read Boxers first, but I liked the correlation with Joan of Arc's story.

Funny, captivating, bittersweet, and heartbreaking. Gene Luen Yang is a brilliant artist who takes storytelling into a different level. One minute you're laughing, and before you know it, you pull yourself away from the story and shake your head. In your mind, you ask, "Wait, did that just happen?"
