Another catch up post, this time #WondrousWednesday
🍁 I very much want to see all of the remaining archaeological sites of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt
🍁 I tagged Invictus! It is a time travel book where at one point they visit the Library of Alexandria 🤩
Thanks for the tag @PageShifter

"I am the master of my fate,
I am the captain of my soul"
I'm currently reading/listening to 5 books.
Two of them, one Historical Fiction, the other a Memoir, have referenced this poem!
A strange and interesting literary coincidence ?
#BookNerd #LoveMyBookishLife #Read2Day #Messages

BookmarkTavern Love this poem! 8mo
TheHeartlandBookFairy @BookmarkTavern Honestly, I can't recall ever reading it, at least in its entirety, before now. But having it referenced in 2 books within a couple of days of one another (Spare, and The Lost Book of Bonn) was enough to send me hunting for it and now it's a favorite! 8mo
BookmarkTavern I highly recommend heading to YouTube and finding a video of Morgan Freeman reading it. It‘s amazing. 💕 8mo
TheHeartlandBookFairy @BookmarkTavern I'll definitely do that, thank you! 8mo

Invictus is about a group of teenagers who join the black market in a world where time travel exists and is used to go back and record history‘s greatest events…or steal from it. It started out as a love letter to history with some great worldbuilding. But as we got to know more about the characters, the more I found them boring. The romances didn‘t fit, and it turned away from history to follow a plot on multi-verses. Largely disappointing.

🎧 I‘m torn.

Farway was born outside of time to a time traveling recorder from 2354AD & a Roman gladiator from 95AD. Dreams crushed he takes a job plundering time & space.

On their 1st trip to the Titanic he meets a girl who seems to be one step ahead of him. This is a story of a ragtag crew‘s adventures through time & parallel worlds.

Billed as a cross between Doctor Who & Firefly. I‘d read a sequel if they removed the romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Quite literally one of the best YA books I have ever read. Period. It‘s a fairly lengthy book that I grabbed from the bargain section of the chapters I work at for $6! I honestly wasn‘t sure what to expect when I first picked it up but I very quickly got sucked in to the story. If I were to describe this book in three words they would be: cool, intense, and captivating. I HIGHLY recommend this one if you love sci fi with a historical background!!

Just started this one. The prologue was awesome. Main character meh so far but I love the tempo of the writing. Can‘t put it down. Does anyone else really hate fake cursing lol “Sit yet tail down!” And “Oh, Crux!” It just sounds silly to me. #scifi #yascifi #yalit

Lannerz I just started reading and the fake swearing is also driving me crazy hahaha 5y
RiverKScottWrites @Lannerz Right??! Idk sometimes it works. In high fantasy, I‘m tooootally down. But sci-fi just feels weird 🤷🏽‍♀️ 5y

Still struggling with a fiction book hangover from Black Leopard Red Wolf. It‘s hard when you look at your TBR stacks and nothing shouts “Read me!” So, going with some rereads to keep me occupied until our next library book order is in & I have some MG/YA books to preview. Love Simon & Baz in Carry On and remember enjoying Invictus.

Time travel? Check. Alternate dimensions? Check. Teenagers wreaking havoc throughout the universe in an attempt to save humanity? Check. If you're into any of these things and so much more, then I highly recommend checking out this YA sci-fi novel. And the best part? Not a love triangle in sight!

I *want* to love this book. It appears to have all the things: technology, time travel, ancient Rome, Titanic! In actually reading it, I'm less than impressed. There's almost no ancient Rome (so far), not much to do with the Titanic, no actual technology beyond "hey, we have a time machine, and it works...somehow..." ? Add in the contrived curse words/phrases, and I'm getting a headache from all the eye rolling. #disappointed

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Was the highlighted bit meant to be a curse/swear? 😬 I hope it gets better for you. 6y
LittlePixels @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Yes! And they use "hashing" or "hashed" as a curse - constantly - as one would use the F word. Like "You really hashed that one up!" ? And here's a direct quote of one of the more flowery ones... "Hade's clangers in a hashing bluebox". Ughhhhhhh! 6y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @LittlePixels yeah, that sounds very annoying. 6y

This is going to be an unpopular opinion, but I‘m just not getting into this. At 230 pages, I‘m bailing. Not interested in the romance and I was really hoping Far was going to visit Ancient Rome but no go so far. On to other shiny objects.

“The future‘s hope is in the past.”
A great team of characters travels back in time working to liberate priceless artifacts before they are destroyed or lost to disaster. Now they have the chance to actually prevent disaster.
Great narration. I was up late listening practically every night.

This was almost a so-so for me
The first half was really fast paced and interesting. I really like this idea of time travelling and completing heists, but the the second half just really slowed its pace. But the ending was interesting enough for it to be a pick for me

This will be an unpopular opinion on this book. I just couldn't get into it. I didn't care about the characters enough or what happened to them. The overall storyline wasn't bad but it was just too slow for my liking. The last 3rd, which is where most of the interesting story happens, is the only reason this is a so-so and not a pan. #audible #audiobook #timetravel

I think I know what's bugging me about this book. It feels like it needs to be the second in the series. The reader is dumped a year into Far and the gang's pirate adventure, and I want to read about that year. I want to read about the escaping the Nazis, Far and Priya falling in love, the adoption of Saffron. It almost seems to fast-paced.

Strong plot, exciting world-building, & Graudin's bewitching prose make this a really fun book! Unfortunately, I felt like the characters were kind of cookie-cutter expected. Plus, I don't usually do established romance— it's boring. Getting to know how the characters fall in love is half the fun if you're gonna include romance! I'd recommend this for a light, exciting, sometimes-humorous read, if not a particularly memorable one. ★★★☆☆.

Linear My husband tried to say that, he was saying that I had so many books that he doubted I read them all. So then I had to separate my shelves in the books that I have read and books that I have not. There's only one shelf of books that I have not. In his face 7y
Linear Also I super love Goodreads tracker of how many books I've read and blah blah blah oh, so then I could shove it in his face "look look at all the books I've read see I read I don't just collect them." Of course he did point out that I have a whole shelf of books I haven't read, and yet I keep getting library books LOL 7y

It‘s got time-traveling from Vegas to Roman Times, to the sinking of the titanic, Rubik‘s cubes, a red panda, and it‘s just so HASHING EPIC and fun. It made me think of both Dr. Who AND Back to the Future. LOVED it. #GIVEAWAYTHEPOWER

Graudin just never disappoints me.

This was such a fun book and had so much character development, relationship building and such a cool world. I surprisingly didn't get lost between the time and dimension jumps so I would say it's an accessible sci-fi. The romance were so adorable and I loved that they were a background thing instead of used to flood the plot with annoying tropes.

Essentially, Imogen is me (hair dye, historian & pet obsession)
