What are my qualifications to write this book? None really. So why should you read it? Heres why: Im a little fat. If a thin guy were to write about a love of food and eating Id highly recommend that you do not read his book.Bacon. McDonalds. Cinnabon. Hot Pockets. Kale. Stand-up comedian and author Jim Gaffigan has made his career rhapsodizing over the most treasured dishes of the American diet (choking on bacon is like getting murdered by your lover) and decrying the worst offenders (kale is the early morning of foods). Fans flocked to hisNew York Timesbestselling bookDad is Fatto hear him riff on fatherhood but now, in his second book, he will give them what they really cravehundreds of pages of his thoughts on all things culinary(ish). Insights such as: why he believes coconut water was invented to get people to stop drinking coconut water, why pretzel bread is #3 on his most important inventions of humankind (behind the wheel and the computer), and the answer to the age-old question which animal is more delicious: the pig, the cow, or the bacon cheeseburger?

I‘m convinced this book was actually written by Homer J. Simpson. This has got to be, hands down, the funniest book I have ever read, and the most enjoyable (and honest) food memoir I‘ve read yet. There is something in this book for everyone. We all know that food is one of the best things about life. So eat something delicious today that brings you joy (and hopefully, good health).

Most regular restaurants try to set a mood or an atmosphere. French restaurants may have a quaint garden. Some Italian restaurants make you feel like you‘ve been transported to a Tuscan villa. The atmosphere in a fast-food establishment looks like they are trying to re-create the environment of a mental institution. The bright lights, the smell of bleach, the employees with the smile and personality of kidnapping victims, and for some reason⬇️

JenniferEgnor the furniture is bolted down. 5mo

It‘s amazing how fast our attitude toward fast-food places changes over our lifetime. When you‘re a kid, a fast-food restaurant is one of your favorite places ever. A stop at McDonald‘s or a Burger King is like a visit to a toy store or Disney World. What‘s for a kid not to like? Bright colors, French fries, an indoor playground. You even get a free toy with your meal. No wonder I begged to have my ninth birthday party at McDonald‘s. But⬇️

JenniferEgnor as an adult, a practical wisdom sets in, and we see fast-food places for what they really are: a place for convenient, mediocre, super-unhealthy food. We view fast-food places like they are someone we used to date. You drive by and look at them like, “I can‘t believe I went there.” Then a couple of nights later you find yourself at their doorstep: “It‘s late. I‘m drunk. How about one for old times‘ sake?” 5mo

Ten years ago nobody ate kale. Then someone (probably a kale farmer or Satan) discovered that kale had some health benefits, and off kale went. Now we are in the middle of a full-fledged kale trend, or as I call it, a kale epidemic.

I guess I do enjoy a salad every now and then. Well, I should say I enjoy salad dressing with just a touch of lettuce. I don‘t even like lettuce on a cheeseburger. I need salad dressing. Without a heavy dose of salad dressing I feel like I‘m eating a bag of yard work. Salad dressing is lettuce gravy. It‘s there to mask the inadequacies.

From my uneducated viewpoint, chili makes no sense for Cincinnati. Even what they do with the chili in Cincinnati makes no sense. They serve it over pasta. Yet somehow it works. The story goes that a Greek immigrant in the 1920s wanted to cater to the local taste buds, so he started serving chili over spaghetti at his hot dog stand, which I‘m pretty sure makes no sense whatsoever. Either way, Cincinnati chili does appeal to people like me⬇️

Jeannie, the kids, and I were on a bus touring the country, and it was highly recommended to me that I eat at this great BBQ place in a gas station. I figured, Why not? If the food is bad, at least it will be a great experience for the kids to eat surrounded by flammable liquid.

We are totally out of control. We‘re a country that loves to eat so much that instead of learning how to eat less, or honestly exercising, we find ways around it, like wiring our mouths shut and undergoing surgeries in which our stomachs are stapled smaller. “I don‘t want to do something barbaric like exercising, so I‘m just going to have someone vacuum the fat out of my body.”

This book had me laughing the whole way through. It was literally just a comedian‘s comments on food, restaurants, and his experiences in said restaurants. “My body is a temple. A temple of doom, but a temple all the same.” 5⭐️

🎧 If you like Jim Gaffigan you will recognize a bunch of this book from his stand up.

He narrates.

I can rewatch his stand up & laugh over & over.

I like that the chapters in the audiobook are labeled the food he‘s going to talk about. Now I really want this audiobook because I know I‘d listen again.

If you like his food humor then you‘ll love this book as he collects all of his food humor right here in one hilarious place.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

This was kind of disappointing actually. There were some food groups that he spent way too much time on. He also listed specific restaurants that he liked that I didn‘t find necessary. I get that he‘s a comedian, so he‘s very sarcastic throughout, but it wasn‘t always that funny consistently. I did enjoy his explanation on how he sees the USA in regions of food and about fish. I feel bad for his wife after listening to this book...

Food. A Love Story was a much needed audio to listen to ❤️ Jim Gaffigan is well known for his Hot Pockets routine and he made me laugh a lot talking about his eating habits, his wife‘s dismay at said habits and his disregard for everyone who doesn‘t look like they enjoy food as much as he does. I am not impressed with his low opinion of CheezIts. They are the BEST cracker 🤣

We have another #bookspinbingo here. I‘ve hit four corners. Still working on a bingo. I like Gaffigan and there are some funny parts though I liked his other books more. He is from Indiana and talks about a burger place I‘ve been which is fun. Worst part is about Subway and he talks about Jared the previous spokesman who we now know is not a good guy.

Listened to the audiobook and it was great! Gaffigan's standup is not always a favorite for me; his constant use of silly voices grates my nerves after a while. The audiobook was, thankfully, low on obnoxious voices and high on funny and absurd food musings.

Looking forward to a game of hot pocket roulette in the near future.

I'm convinced that anyone who doesn't like Mexican food is a psychopath. Mexican food is so good, you'd think the real immigration problem would be fat guys like me sneaking across the border into Mexico.

Mexican food I grew up with consisted of the same four ingredients...tortilla with cheese meat and vegetables...It's all the same stuff in different shapes.

Selena85 ? that he shares the thought that Mexican food is all the same stuff with different shapes. That's how I check my Taco Bell order "Did they give us enough shapes?" ? 4y

“I like my coffee strong, black, and frequent.” Was my favourite bit from this book which I couldn‘t finish because I just don‘t think that kale being gross and steak being “manly” is all that funny. I‘m looking for some lighter reads these days but this just is not for me.

I finished this yesterday. I enjoyed this book & may blame it for a few of my poor food choices this week. 😂 I did get less interested in the last couple of hours (I was wondering how there were still more food types to talk about), so I had a hard time rating it on GR. Definitely some lol moments.

Gaffigan shares his love for food and tackles lots of popular fast food places and restaurants with his jokes. Full of great one liners!

On a plane (again) with my new cordless headphones listening to the tagged. It‘s not as funny as I expected. A few chuckles, but really, it‘s a book of essays about various foods. As he says he‘s an “eatie” not a foodie. And that about sums up the book.

Mindyrecycles My book club read it and most of us were less than thrilled. I thought the introductory remarks were fun but then it was just a list of foods with a couple weak remarks for each. I did enjoy the photos of his kids but you don‘t get even that. 😂 6y
