Hand on the Wall
Hand on the Wall | Maureen Johnson
New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson delivers the witty and pulse-pounding conclusion to the Truly Devious series as Stevie Bell solves the mystery that has haunted Ellingham Academy for over 75 years.Ellingham Academy must be cursed. Three people are now dead. One, a victim of either a prank gone wrong or a murder. Another, dead by misadventure. And now, an accident in Burlington has claimed another life. All three in the wrong place at the wrong time. All at the exact moment of Stevie's greatest triumph . . . She knows who Truly Devious is. She's solved it. The greatest case of the century. At least, she thinks she has. With this latest tragedy, it's hard to concentrate on the past. Not only has someone died in town, but David disappeared of his own free will and is up to something. Stevie is sure that somehow--somehow--all these things connect. The three deaths in the present. The deaths in the past. The missing Alice Ellingham and the missing David Eastman. Somewhere in this place of riddles and puzzles there must be answers. Then another accident occurs as a massive storm heads toward Vermont. This is too much for the parents and administrators. Ellingham Academy is evacuated. Obviously, it's time for Stevie to do something stupid. It's time to stay on the mountain and face the storm--and a murderer. In the tantalizing finale to the Truly Devious trilogy, New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson expertly tangles her dual narrative threads and ignites an explosive end for all who've walked through Ellingham Academy. Praise for the Truly Devious series: "Readers, hang tight: there's one more round to come, and if the signs are right, it'll be to die for." --Publishers Weekly (starred review)"The Agatha Christie-like ecosystem pairs with lacerating contemporary wit, and alternating past and present scenes makes for a multilayered, modern detective story." --New York Times Book Review"Remember the first time reading Harry Potter and knowing it was special? There's that same sense of magic in the introduction of teen Sherlock-in-training Stevie Bell." --USA Today (four stars)"Be still, my Agatha-Christie-loving beating heart." --Bustle

Thanks to hygge hour last night I was able to finish the last book in the Truly Devious trilogy. As a whole I did enjoy the series. Great mysterious murder plot but it really could have all been done in one book and in the end the big reveal felt anticlimactic. The tagged book just dragged as I waited and waited for Stevie to divulge who the killer was. Glad to have this series finally completed.

Spent most the day doing laundry and chores so it was extra relaxing this evening to don my favorite pair of cozy socks, have tea in one of my favorite mugs and lather my hands with a favorite scent of vanilla and lavender while reading the pictured books.

I loved the entire trilogy covering the Truly Devious mystery. I have mixed feelings towards David, though. His friendship with Ellie really helped balance him out. Everyone has chaotic energy, but no one is quite at his level now. He just feels like a lot to handle, even when Stevie is in the wrong. Janelle and Vi are great, and Nate resonates with my soul. I was able to solve one mystery by process of elimination, and I do like the resolution.

Today on Stuff I Drank While I Read, we have an iced coffee from the McDonald‘s near the nature preserve where I took today‘s long-ass bike ride.

I‘m halfway through THE HAND ON THE WALL now, and while I like it, it‘s currently my least favourite in the series. I‘m pretty sure that‘s a momentum thing, though; I‘d be more involved with it if I‘d managed to read it right after THE VANISHING STAIR.

LiteraryinLawrence I have to say I totally loved book 4, the one that takes place at summer camp. Really fun series overall! 2y
xicanti @LiteraryinLawrence I sank back into this one in the back half! I plan to read the fourth one within the next week or so, unless someone borrows it out from under me. 2y

I love this series and I loved the finale. I knew who did it but it still didn't hinder the reveal. Also the fact that they're continuing the series with a new mystery just makes my heart happy. I love these characters and cant wait to see what they continue to do.

9/10 my only complaint is that the flashbacks always occur at the best parts of the book, but it‘s okay because the flashbacks usually get pretty intense too. I think this was my favorite of them all despite David being an asshole until he wasn‘t.

Every single book in this series has ended on a cliffhanger, which I think is a little cheap. It also discourages me to read when I know I will just have to buy the next book after this one and the series isn't even finished yet! This is a DNF. Maybe I will come back to it when I am in the mood for some cliff hangers...

This series is SO EPIC!! I totally loved it. Book 3 was just as good if not better than the others. It flipped back and forth between the 1930s and the present as the mysteries unraveled. I heartily recommend it for not only the clever story and the memorable characters but for the tongue in cheek writing style. I will definitely see what else she has written!

BookDragonNotWorm There's a fourth in the series in the works...I don't know whether it's just going to be the same characters or if she thought of a way to expound on the mysteries, but I couldn't be more excited! 3y

LiteraryinLawrence @BookDragonNotWorm @mcipher I know!!! So what I heard is that it‘s the same main character working on a different mystery. I think I heard it‘s set at a summer camp? Hopefully some of the same side characters too! It‘s out in April! 3y
BookDragonNotWorm @LiteraryinLititz You're right! I just checked Amazon and it's already available for preorder, die out this summer! And Stevie gets to bring her friends!!!! 3y
mcipher @LiteraryinLititz @BookDragonNotWorm Hopefully it‘s good and then it can be a regular Nancy Drew type series 😆 Goodreads has a synopsis! 3y

I've decided I'm going to give the #Popsugar Reading Challenge for this year. The challenge is 50 books, and luckily I can count may of the titles I've already read in 2020 so far.

Challenge 1 of 50: A book published in 2020
The Hand on the Wall was the first 2020 pub I read this year, so it gets the honor! I'll be updating with my challenge titles over the next few weeks until I get all caught up.

Finished the Truly Devious trilogy! I spent the last 2 hours 32 minutes 58 seconds doing it. As I said in my review of Book 2: The Vanishing Stair, I got to a certain point and felt compelled to read the rest as fast as possible. This one, The Hand On The Wall, I felt that way from the beginning. It was a fun read. It‘s Book #2 on my #BookSpinBingo and the 10th book I have read this month! There were a lot of traps and tricks in this one. Try it!

Definitely the best book in the series and a great conclusion that gave a lot of answers. Whilst I'm not keen on most of the characters, the story is really interesting and I love the clever teen detective solving a mystery.

Book #4 has been announced as a standalone mystery which is going to be really interesting and hopefully keep the story tight and concise.

A spectacular finish to this 3-part teen detective series which practically forces the reader to consume all three books in a row. I also especially appreciated the main character's wry sense of humor and quirkiness. The ending wrapped things up nicely and was a surprise for me.
