Hollywood Park: A Memoir | Mikel Jollett
46 posts | 33 read | 27 to read
HOLLYWOOD PARK is a remarkable memoir of a tumultuous life. Mikel Jollett was born into one of the countrys most infamous cults, and subjected to a childhood filled with poverty, addiction, and emotional abuse. Yet, ultimately, his is a story of fierce love and family loyalty told in a raw, poetic voice that signals the emergence of a uniquely gifted writer. We were never young. We were just too afraid of ourselves. No one told us who we were or what we were or where all our parents went. They would arrive like ghosts, visiting us for a morning, an afternoon. They would sit with us or walk around the grounds, to laugh or cry or toss us in the air while we screamed. Then theyd disappear again, for weeks, for months, for years, leaving us alone with our memories and dreams, our questions and confusion. ... So begins Hollywood Park, Mikel Jolletts remarkable memoir. His story opens in an experimental commune in California, which later morphed into the Church of Synanon, one of the countrys most infamous and dangerous cults. Per the leaders mandate, all children, including Jollett and his older brother, were separated from their parents when they were six months old, and handed over to the cults School. After spending years in what was essentially an orphanage, Mikel escaped the cult one morning with his mother and older brother. But in many ways, life outside Synanon was even harder and more erratic. In his raw, poetic and powerful voice, Jollett portrays a childhood filled with abject poverty, trauma, emotional abuse, delinquency and the lure of drugs and alcohol. Raised by a clinically depressed, narcissistic mother, tormented by his angry older brother, subjected to the unpredictability of troubled step-fathers and longing for contact with his father, a former heroin addict and ex-con, Jollett slowly, often painfully, builds a life that leads him to Stanford University and, eventually, to finding his voice as a writer and musician. Hollywood Park is told at first through the limited perspective of a child, and then broadens as Jollett begins to understand the world around him. Although Mikel Jolletts story is filled with heartbreak, it is ultimately an unforgettable portrayal of love at its fiercest and most loyal.

I loved this so much. An intimate and honest memoir of a childhood that began in a cult and then moved to the home of a narcissistic and emotionally abusive mother, the forging of family bonds with a father, stepmother, and extended family, and years of struggle, growth, and healing. It was so good and I want to talk to people about it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EvieBee Sold! I remember listening to an author interview and it sounded like a fab memoir. 2y
fredthemoose @EvieBee totally worth a read! I had it sort of peripherally on my TBR and then it was a pick for my LMPBC group and I‘m so glad that put it to the top of the list for me! 2y

A raw, poetic, and inspiring memoir from a child survivor of the Church of Synanon (and lead singer of indie rock band The Airborne Toxic Event). Jollett writes eloquently about his childhood, his relationships with his family, and coming to terms with the traumas he experienced. A born writer, Jollett bravely pours himself out on every page. I was blown away by the intimacy he created and was deeply impacted by his story. A beautiful memoir. 5⭐️

BarbaraTheBibliophage I also loved this one. 3y

Book 114
I listened to Hollywood Park, read by the author. Jollett writes about his difficult childhood, including adjusting to the world outside of the Synanon cult. It feels mismarketed as the cult isn't the central focus of the memoir.

For some reason I am drawn to stories about cults - be it a documentary on TV or a memoir by the frontman of a band I have never heard of.

I found "Hollywood Park" to be less about a cult and more about survival. Surviving addiction and depression and bad parenting. And somehow having it all work together for good.

Jollett is a fantastic writer. I loved that at the center of his story is a racetrack where he and his dad dreamt and hoped.

A very deep dive into Jollett‘s life as the son of a narcissistic mother & the survivor of a cult which separated babies from their parents at 6 months of age. His life story was interesting, if a bit too long. Kudos for revealing so much of his thought process as he struggled to find out why he was so unable to form attachments to people. I am 100% sure this must be a fantastic audiobook. If you‘re going to check this book out, I‘d listen to it.

This story is amazing! I don‘t read many memoirs but this was fascinating. The author narrates himself which makes all of the pain and loss and abuse and heartbreak that much more poignant. I especially loved the early story written as if the small child experiencing the turmoil was explaining it and I now want to read more about the cult he was born into. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 all day long! #wintergames2020 #merryreaders

This was so great!! Listening to it in Mikel's voice made it so much better than reading a hard copy. His story is just so many emotions rolled up into one. To see what he went through and to see how he ended up successful was amazing. I do wish there was more about the cult (Synanon) but I understand he was young.

I was so excited this was available at the library this morning because I had read so many good reviews. However, I‘m bailing because I just can‘t stand to be in a child‘s head anymore! I‘m 20% in and he‘s still 7 or 8 years old. Just no.

(To be clear, he narrates the memoir as if he‘s a child and doesn‘t understand adult concepts, not looking back at his childhood.)

VeganCleopatra This was a big reason I hated it too. 4y

Absolutely lovely memoir, perhaps a little too long if I'm being honest, but man this guy really has insight into his nuclear family. If you saw this and thought it was about growing up in a cult you'd be wrong--it's about growing up with the kind of parents who would join a cult and hand off their children to be raised in a communal living space at 6 months old. I do wish we had more insight as to why his mother left when she did....more below

8little_paws I don't know a thing about this band he's in, however, the audiobook of this memoir has clips of music that he wrote to accompany the memoir throughout. I do really recommend it. 4y
8little_paws @Megabooks case in point re: Phil Collins and older people and new music. The Airborne Toxic Event?? Couldn't name a single tune 4y
Megabooks @8little_paws good point! I have this on my TBR. I‘ve got to check the library for it. I have some audible credits too. Thanks for the tag! 4y
8little_paws @megabooks this reminds me of when I went to see John Darnielle in person after he published Universal Harvester (back in the pre covid days). He said there, that people came to his writing b/c of his band the Mountain Goats and I wanted to raise my hand and go ME ME ME! I“m the dork who has no idea what the MG are but thinks you are an amazing writer! Since finding out he's in a band I've listened and liked some of his music too! 4y
8little_paws @megabooks also if you have Hoopla via library I found this memoir there! (edited) 4y

I started reading this memoir before realizing the author is in a rock band. I looked him up and downloaded the band's latest album on hoopla titled "Hollywood Park" as well. (Songs from the album are played in the audiobook which is amazing!)
This is an emotional coming of age story about an unconventional childhood. Synanon, an addiction treatment - turned cult, and Mikel's mother's narcissism are the catalysts for many of his experiences.

sprainedbrain I don‘t read a lot of memoirs, but I love Mike and Airborne Toxic Event, so I might make an exception based on your review. 😉 He‘s also one of my favorite people on Twitter! 4y

Mikel grows up in poverty and confusion wondering who he can trust. He manages to attend Stanford on scholarship but that doesn‘t guarantee him a successful career. As I am more than half way through his story, you‘re aware that most of these devastating experiences occurred before Mikel was only a teen/enduring more than most would in a lifetime. He grapples with the life long demons of his extensive family history of substance abuse and prison.

He reads the audio and places himself and the listener into the memory of his tumultuous childhood. Early childhood in a cult, unstable mother and unstable men she brought into their lives, a loving bond with his father & stepmother, motivation and drive to excel 4/5🎸s TW: Rabbits raised for food😢 ⬇️

You can feel the intensity and insanity that swallowed Mikel Jollett throughout his childhood, adolescence and adult years. His descriptions of home life with an unbalanced mother and free spirited but dependable dad had me laughing one minute and heartbroken the next. It makes sense that this sensitive child would grow into a creative artist. While unfamiliar with Mikel‘s music I have become a fan of his enormous heart and artistic soul👇🏼

Cinfhen The audio is lyrical and soothing.

Raw, intense, and emotional, Hollywood Park is a memoir that will stick with the reader long after its been read. Filled with alcoholism, addiction, violence and poverty, not to mention the infamous cult known as Synanon, Jollett‘s life and memoir shows the powerful affects these things can have on an individual. Hollywood Park isn‘t filled only with negativity and hurt however; it is also filled with love, family, perseverance and triumph.

An excellent memoir! Jollett is a seriously talented writer. The book was so in depth and detailed and so in the moment that it read more like fiction than a typical memoir. It reflects on childhood emotional abuse and addiction and poverty with lyrical and emotional prose, and maybe it's a little long-winded, but worth the effort, I highly recommend!

Mikel Jollett's Hollywood Park memoir is full of lyrical hurt, happiness, chaotic living, anger, & downright brilliant writing. The Airborne Toxic Event lead singer tells his story of living in the infamous Church of Synanon cult until he was 5 years old when his mother takes him & his brother out of that life & moves them around the West Coast hoping to find normalcy. The Audiobook is narrated by the author. The background music is fantastic!

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I didn't realize the author was the singer in TATE. Now I'm interested! 😃 5y
LinesUponAPage @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yes! It is written just like his written lyrics. So many beautiful lines that I stopped breathing in so many places and had to remind my self to keep drawing breath. I want to either borrow the book for quotes or buy it. There were a few that were so great I wanted to remember them, but listening made it hard to write down to share. :)

Listen to their album trailer: https://youtu.be/v8e6DlwuZXw It's their new album.
(edited) 5y
LinesUponAPage The lyrical movement of Jollett's words are so poetic that there are sections of this book that I had to resume breathing when I didn't realize I had stopped because of how poignant the passages touched me.
The music in the background is the music from The Airborne Toxic Event's new album, Hollywood Park based on Jollett's life. The music and words are as amazing as the words in this album trailer.

Listen: https://youtu.be/v8e6DlwuZXw
5y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Awesome! Thank you. Having a little knowledge about the subject helps. I do listen to their music but obviously I am not a super fan since I didn't recognize Jollett's name. 😁 It's been awhile since I've played their albums so I know what I'm putting on when I cook dinner. 5y

Thanks to Libro.fm for the ALC of Mikel Jollett's Hollywood Park, which will be published on May 26.⠀

Mikel Jollett's memoir Hollywood Park was all over the emotional spectrum for me: there were moments of joy, of sadness, of shock, of delight, of horror, of disbelief. I'm so glad I listened--Jollett reads the audiobook, which lends it great power--though I imagine I would have been able to appreciate the beautiful writing even more in print.⠀⬇️

UnabridgedPod Jollett's tale begins in his early childhood, shortly after his parents had left the Synanon cult and reclaimed Mikel and his older brother Tony. Synanon believed that children should be raised separately from their parents, so at six months, the boys were taken to live in a "school"/orphanage. Mikel had connected with Bonnie, one of the workers there, but had not experienced true connection with any adult. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod When his mother reclaims the boys, they have to try to establish a new understanding of what it means to live as a family.⠀

Jollett wrote the early sections of the book to reflect his childish understanding, interpreting the stories his mother tells him through an innocent and uninformed lens. ⬇️
5y
UnabridgedPod His father is not part of his life at this point, and so Mikel comes to know his mother well, along with the men who become father figures for Mikel and Tony. ⠀

While parts of the book are difficult to listen to because they depict such hardship for a child, Jollett's perspective on his growing up is evocative, reflective, honest, and vulnerable. ⬇️
5y
See All 7 Comments
UnabridgedPod He shares his understanding of his mother and of Tony, of their impact on him, as they grow and change, and we see his relationship with his father as it becomes increasingly important to him. ⠀

I'm so glad that I went in not knowing much about the author or his life; the revelations gain power because I did not expect them. ⬇️
5y
UnabridgedPod Hollywood Park offers such joy in the discovery of Jollett's growth as a human being who increasingly understands himself and those around him, who gains confidence in his identity and his talents, who comes to understand how best to express his life.⠀

What's the last powerful memoir you read? Do you prefer to read memoirs in print or via audio?

Jollett spent his first seven years living in a cult, where kids were separated from their parents. This is less about that than life after, including his mother‘s mental health issues, family members‘ addiction, and poverty. Jollett has a close connection to his dad, including weekly trips to the track. Jollett balances the mood, opens his heart, and has a compelling story to tell.
