Still Alice
Still Alice | Lisa Genova
A moving story of a woman with early onset Alzheimer's disease, now a major Academy Award-winning film starring Julianne Moore and Kristen Stewart. Alice Howland is proud of the life she worked so hard to build. At fifty, she's a cognitive psychology professor at Harvard and a renowned expert in linguistics, with a successful husband and three grown children. When she begins to grow forgetful and disoriented, she dismisses it for as long as she can until a tragic diagnosis changes her life - and her relationship with her family and the world around her - for ever. Unable to care for herself, Alice struggles to find meaning and purpose as her concept of self gradually slips away. But Alice is a remarkable woman, and her family learn more about her and each other in their quest to hold on to the Alice they know. Her memory hanging by a frayed thread, she is living in the moment, living for each day. But she is still Alice. 'Remarkable illuminating highly relevant today' Daily Mail 'The most accurate account of what it feels like to be inside the mind of an Alzheimer's patient I've ever read. Beautifully written and very illuminating' Rosie Boycot 'Utterly brilliant' Chrissy Iley

Mom saw how much this book affected me, she read it too and was similarly touched. So she went on a mission to find this now hard-to-find movie for me for Christmas. She did find it (the digital coupon expired back in 2018 so I believe her). My men are out of town tonight so I decided it‘s as good a time to watch it as any. Not very Christmas-y but well, still worth one point in #wintergames

GingerAntics I just saw your reply. So verily diagnosing it before there are any symptoms? I wonder if it‘s something we could see in children and treat them starting in childhood; just avoid the whole thing. I have a grandmother who apparently had it really bad. If this whole disease could be avoided or even eradicated, that would be great. 3mo
Texreader @GingerAntics Researchers are apparently close to identifying early markers for the disease. An Alzheimer‘s vaccine maybe? Wouldn‘t that be awesome? 3mo
GingerAntics That would be great! Just think of the people it could save. Then again, it would be another thing for the anti-vaxers to attack. I seriously feel bad for people developing vaccines. 3mo
Texreader @GingerAntics Anti-Vaxxers are scary indeed! 3mo
GingerAntics I have a student who always comes in with his mother (I guess he's under 18, but still) and she was telling me how she was sorry she got him vaccinated because it rewrites your DNA and that's why all these kids (including her son) have diabetes now. I almost wanted to ask her if she knew how DNA worked, but I already knew the answer. 3mo
GingerAntics She claimed she read this thing online (of course) by a mortician who claimed to always bury all these babies right after they'd been vaccinated. She believed SIDS wasn't real, their sudden deaths were caused by the vaccines poisoning them and rewriting their DNA so their bodies couldn't function anymore. 3mo
Texreader @GingerAntics That‘s frightening! But look on the bright side, she did get her son vaccinated. 3mo
GingerAntics Isn‘t it? I mean, this kid is otherwise really intelligent. He‘s 17 and has been in college level classes for a while (at least the last two school years) and has been successful. It‘s just amazing that he can be so intelligent, and still believe in all of these crazy conspiracy theories. 3mo

Did you know this book was originally self-published? It deserves 5 stars plus. The quote here is from the author‘s letter to readers. I‘m convinced. Still Alice focuses on the onset of Early Onset Alzheimer‘s Disease. Despite the really heavy content, the book is actually very digestible. I powered through it in less than 24 hours. It perhaps isn‘t a timeless classic, or a work of high art, but it‘s an interesting story rooted in heart-wrenching subject matter, and it‘s told in a very engaging way. #MayMovieMagic One of the first books I ever read for bookclub and it has stayed with me almost 12 years later!!!! At 50 Alice seems to have it all except sometimes she misplaces her keys, or forgets why she went into the kitchen but when she goes out for a run and can‘t remember how to get home, her “old life” is about to change. Such a heartbreaking look at early onset Alzheimer‘s Disease. Beautifully written and explored. #WhereIsMyMind

kamoorephoto This destroyed me, film and book. My grandmother, who I barely knew, and I saw maybe once a year as a child whether we visited England (from Hong Kong) suffered from Alzheimer‘s, and all my life the disease has terrified me. Heartbreaking and courageous. 9mo

AmyG My grandfather and Mom died of Alzheimer‘s. I can‘t bear to read or watch this.i‘m sorry @Itchyfeetreader @Kalalalatja (edited) 2y
Kalalalatja @AmyG oh, I‘m so sorry for you! I can‘t even imagine how that must have been like 💔 2y
AmyG @Kalalalatja Thanks. It truly just sucks. But...what can you do? 2y
TrishB @AmyG @Itchyfeetreader hugs to both of you 💕 totally understandable. 2y
Crazeedi I watched my sister at 55 enter middle stage Alzheimer's and lewy body dementia, she was a brilliant woman full of life, always smiling. She passed at 60 , unable to speak or swallow, but she still smiled. I offer my sympathies to all who posted here, read this book during that time 2y
Crazeedi It's a horrible disease 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! I felt the same way when I read this...so touching and such good writing for that to come out. 2y
GypsyKat Wow. This sounds like an incredibly emotional read! 💙 2y
sofiaga I listened to this audiobook and I was in tears on the bus. That‘s really unusual for me. My friend had the same reaction. I watched the movie but it‘s not even close to the book. (edited) 2y
Skyrimir This is one I‘m scared to read! My grandma had Alzheimer‘s and I saw firsthand what it‘s like. I‘ve always been a little nervous about it running in families. 2y
ephemeralwaltz Great book and movie 💔💔💔 2y
CouronneDhiver This book certainly stands on its own two feet. Very scary and yet handled with such grace. I was totally stunned at the end... hard book hangover. 2y
britt_brooke This book hit so close to home. My MIL has early onset Alzheimer‘s (as did her mother; both in their early 60s) and it‘s heartbreaking. I haven‘t been able to watch the movie, but the book gave me some great insight and perspective. 2y
Kalalalatja @Crazeedi I‘m so sorry! This is one of the scariest diseases... @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GypsyKat @ephemeralwaltz @sofiaga @CouronneDhiver it was great, but I really wasn‘t prepared for the emotional impact of it. I had to call my mom after finishing, just to be sure she was okay 💔 @Skyrimir I can‘t even imagine how that‘s like, and I‘m so sorry about your grandma! 2y
Kalalalatja @britt_brooke that‘s horrible, I‘m so sorry! It is just so scary how the disease changes people‘s personalities and erases their memory... 2y
britt_brooke @Kalalalatja It‘s very sad thing so see. I can‘t imagine how she must feel. 💔 2y
Reviewsbylola Such an amazing book. ❤️ 2y
Cinfhen I missed this post ~ sorry and to everyone who has suffered from dementia \ Alzheimer‘s my heart goes out to you. It‘s truly the cruelest disease out there. This book was brilliant and poignant and absolutely devastating 💔 2y

Pickpick

Such a powerful story about a 51 year old woman diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer‘s Disease! I would highly recommend this one if you haven‘t already read it. I think Lisa Genova may be a new favorite author. Have you read it? If you have, what did you think?

Jennifer3 I read it and it seems weird to say I loved it, but I did. It seemed to capture what it would be like for the individual living with a debilitating disease such as Alzheimer‘s. 2y
booksaremyfavorite I agree. It‘s a tough subject to address but I cried and laughed along with Alice. 2y
RenePenn One of my favorite reads this year so far. It drew me in and haunted me for weeks. Every time I forgot something it had me wondering... 2y
