Turn of Midnight (Original)
Turn of Midnight (Original) | Minette Walters
The compelling, taut and suspenseful conclusion to The Last Hours As the year 1349 approaches, the Black Death continues its devastating course across England. In Dorseteshire, the quarantined people of Develish question whether they are the only survivors. Guided by their beloved young mistress, Lady Anne, they wait, knowing that when their dwindling stores are finally gone they will have no choice but to leave. But where will they find safety in the desolate wasteland outside? One man has the courage to find out. Thaddeus Thurkell, a freethinking, educated serf, strikes out in search of supplies and news. A compelling leader, he and his companions quickly throw off the shackles of serfdom and set their minds to ensuring Develish's future--and freedom for its people. But what use is freedom that cannot be gained lawfully? When Lady Anne and Thaddeus conceive an audacious plan to secure her people's independence, neither foresees the life-threatening struggle over power, money and religion that follows...

Mehso-so

This narrowly avoids an outright Pan. First part was disappointing, but I ploughed on, hopeless optimist that I am, thinking the excitement might just ramp up in the next chapter ... it didn't. Infuriatingly, it had the same tedious middle section as the last one! The characters got increasingly one dimensional & nowt much happens. The ending has a few moments of satisfying resolution, but overall, I wish I'd not bothered! Disappointing ☹️

Great end to the Black Death duet!! The first book (tagged) is about the spread of the pestilence in 1348 and how the characters deal with it in the immediate. This installment begins immediately after the first book and is the story of rebuilding homes, businesses, and status after so much loss. Much conflict stands in the way of Lady Anne and the people of Develish and it was thrilling to watch the conclusion unfold.

Reading outside after a long workday. This is the last of today‘s sunlight and 72 degrees is the perfect temperature.

This book began immediately after the last book ended so I feel fully immersed in the Black Death and its aftermath. Both despair and hope are present in Dorsetshire in the late 1340‘s.

Last day of the month means discussion day for #LiteraryCrew ‘s #buddyread ! Those of us who completed the book (and I‘m so sorry I haven‘t been able to complete it!) gave it high marks. I‘d love to hear everyone‘s impressions - did you feel the story continued in a plausible way? How was character development? Do you feel questions left in the first book are answered in this one? Which did you like better - the first or second book? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle Please comment below (and use spoilers if necessary). Also, please pose your own questions - maybe there was a section that gave you pause and you wish to discuss. As I finish this one, I‘ll contribute as well (having limited downtime for reading something this big in page numbers really threw me this month - I apologize!) Thanks for joining this month, and I‘ll post the reminder about February‘s book tomorrow! 5y
TamAnder Looking forward to responses.. my copy just recently showed up so I‘ll be doing a late read of it. So much for thinking I ordered it under Amazon Prime! 🤦‍♀️ I jumped into the Feb read instead and enjoying it! 5y
Jerdencon I really enjoyed both books but have to admit I preferred the first book more. I felt that the second dragged in places.i would have also liked to see more of devilish at the end of the story instead of where it ended but maybe that‘s book 3? ( hopefully!) I liked the characters especially Lady Anne and how quick witted she was. Not sure how realistic that would have actually been but it was fun to read. 5y
See All 18 Comments
BethM @Jerdencon is there a book 3? I‘m not sure where else they‘d go other than a HEA. I enjoyed this. I felt the pacing was a little off in both books so I didn‘t pay much attention to it. I enjoyed Eleanor‘s evolution. 5y
umbrellagirl I though that the two books really were one story. The first ended so abruptly and without closure. If I‘d read the first one when It was released, I‘d have been annoyed at having to wait so long. 5y
umbrellagirl @Jerdencon I also thought this one was a bit long in places. For me it was the parts about the young men out in the villages. Then at the end, things moved so quickly when the steward was holding Thaddeus prisoner. 5y
Librarybelle @BethM @Jerdencon @umbrellagirl Great responses! I thought this was to be a trilogy, but when I was looking up some things about the series last night, I couldn‘t find mention of a projected third book. I totally agree about the first book and how annoyed I would be if I had to wait to read the second! 5y
Chrissyreadit @Jerdencon @BethM I‘m hoping for a book 3. I love this community and the way it is being built. I think the end of the plague must have contributed to big changes in the world. 5y
Chrissyreadit @umbrellagirl @BethM @Jerdencon @Librarybelle I agree these seemed seamless in some ways, and I had not realized how much time had passed in the stories but appreciated the growth that occurred. I was surprised that Borne ended up a decent person. I enjoyed the development of the boys. My greatest question is of course Thaddeus‘ father. Eva does not seem very romantic. Or well traveled. 5y
Chrissyreadit Also, I love the diary entries. I would have enjoyed brief entries with notes about medical treatment and medicinals too. I‘m a sucker for herbs and medical talk. 5y
Librarybelle Oh, good point, @Chrissyreadit ! That would have been intriguing to see notes about medical treatment and medicinals. 5y
BethM @Chrissyreadit I‘d read a third. Especially if there was a wedding bc in a sucker for romance 😂 5y
Librarybelle @BethM Sometimes you just need some romance in the story! 5y
CoverToCoverGirl @Chrissyreadit I loved the diary entries too! 5y
CoverToCoverGirl @BethM @Chrissyreadit @Jerdencon I‘d love a third book. I think it would be very interesting to see how life unfolded after the plague and to find out who Thaddeus‘ father is. And I just want more. I did like both books equally. Thank you @Librarybelle for motivating me to read this duet sooner. 5y
Librarybelle So glad you could join us, @CoverToCoverGirl ! 5y
Sace I finished this one last week and I really enjoyed it. I would be quite sad if there wasn't a third. I'd like to know more about Eleanor and the person she's becoming. Borne did turn out to be redeemable and that could be an interesting read. Please let there be a third! 5y
Sace I don't know how I feel about the Lady Anne/Thaddeus pairing. Maybe it's my age or maybe I misunderstood their interactions from the beginning or maybe it's just my teacher self reacting, but for so much of the book it felt more like a mother/son teacher/student relationship for me that I'm struggling with them as romantic partners. 5y

I loved this book! Everything I want in a story. Dark Ages, likable characters, I liked the storyline, I liked the conclusion. I wonder if she will write more about Develish. These are def two favorites! #literarycrew what did you all think? Especially about the turn of events and conclusion?

I‘ve been so remiss with the check in posts! How is everyone doing with the reading? I‘ll have a post at the end of the month to discuss conclusions, so if you have already finished, watch for that post! We can discuss general observations, thoughts, etc in the comments below.

I haven‘t started yet! But, I‘m making a point to start it this week! #LiteraryCrew #Buddyread

It‘s January, which means the next #LiteraryCrew #BuddyRead begins! We‘re devoting the month to this book, which is the sequel to The Last Hours. I‘ll post check in queries throughout the month, and at the end of the month, we‘ll discuss the book. This is a low key buddy read that allows you to set your own pace.

I‘ve tagged those who have said they were interested in joining the buddy read. Anyone else? All are welcome!

Mollyanna Woohoo. Hoping to finish The Last Hours this week. 5y

umbrellagirl Just finished the first one so I can start this one! 5y
TamAnder I hope everyone is enjoying the current read. I need to finish a couple others first, but wondered how it‘s going and any thoughts on the characters‘ storylines. Possible to do without spoilers? 😊 5y
Librarybelle @TamAnder I know for sure that @BethM has finished and enjoyed it. I‘m a terrible hostess - I haven‘t posted an update post! I‘ll do it this weekend for sure! I do think we should read the second book right after this; we‘re all enjoying the first one, so it would be perfect! 5y
Sace @Librarybelle it is nice to pace myself though. If this turns out to be as good as I think it will, I don't want to rush it and then be sad it's over. Definitely agree about moving right to the next one. 5y

4.5⭐ the 2nd book, continues the story of the people of Develish and their struggle to survive the Black Dearh of the 14th century. The writer weaves a compelling tale of a Lady Anne and the serfs of this desmesne bold desire to live as free men and women.

This is the Part 2 in Minette Walters' Black Death Series. Oh, what a wonderfully, brilliant read this was. A historical fiction book, set in the 14th Century, Old England. The author has a phenomenal way with character development, and I could not read this series fast enough. She adapted the language to match the time, and, as a reader, I got lost in this wonderful tale of loss, courage and survival.
