White Trash Warlock
White Trash Warlock | David R. Slayton
Not all magicians go to schools of magic. Adam Binder has the Sight. Its a power that runs in his bloodline: the ability to see beyond this world and into another, a realm of magic populated by elves, gnomes, and spirits of every kind. But for much of Adams life, that power has been a curse, hindering friendships, worrying his backwoods family, and fueling his abusive fathers rage. Years after his brother Bobby had him committed to a psych ward, Adam is ready to come to grips with who he is, to live his life on his terms, to find love, and maybe even use his magic to do some good. Hoping to track down his missing father, Adam follows a trail of cursed artifacts to Denver, only to discover that an ancient and horrifying spirit has taken possession of Bobbys wife. It isnt long before Adam becomes the spirits next target. To survive the confrontation, save his sister-in-law, and learn the truth about his father, Adam will have to risk bargaining with very dangerous beings ... including his first love.

Friday reads with Casey. I settled on WHITE TRASH WARLOCK after my indecision earlier this week, and it‘s… not bad? But it also hasn‘t engaged me the way I wanted it to? That‘s at least partly because I‘m reading it way too slow, but I also find the characterization a bit flat. It‘s all great in theory, but in practice I want more of a reason to pick it up again after I‘ve put it down. I haven‘t managed to find that hook.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I remember quite enjoying this one… but it‘s been so long I‘d probably need to reread before continuing on 😝 7mo
xicanti @thegirlwiththelibrarybag it does seem to have a lot of fans. I heard tons of great things about it before I picked it up. 7mo

I will admit I got White Trash Warlock for the title, but it‘s been tons of fun. It‘s been our road trip book, and we finished it today on our trip to Mississippi. It‘s the first in a series, so we have Trailer Park Trickster queued up next. I still have 2 hours left in Death Comes to Marlow. #audiowalk

I really enjoyed this book. Adam is a hero you want to root for. Being shunned by his family for his magical and sexual oddities, Adam keeps it all together. Not only unknowingly saves the man he loves, but helps his family find peace within themselves. I think that was one of the most interesting aspects to this story honestly. That it's not just a fantasy story, but it's a real story, about how different families react to different challenges.

An absolutely fun urban fantasy, and it takes place in Denver! I really enjoyed the characters in this book, and the plot is a ton of fun. I love the magic, the spirit realm, and the overlaps between normal life and Adam‘s magic one. This book has an excellent pace, an adorable romance, and perfectly placed hilarity to break up the serious. My husband stumbled on this Colorado local book and we both loved it. #LGBTQ #ColoradoLocalAuthor #Fantasy

1. I'm always reading several books at a time, but the tagged is the book I'm deepest into right now. It's lots of fun and takes place in Colorado!
2. Storygraph (love the stats, options, challenges, and independent site), Goodreads, and a book journal I'm keeping.
3. Looks like I recently googled something about the Mamo comic issue I just posted about!

I loved this when I read it last year - magic, messy family dynamics, adventure - all the good stuff, basically - the second comes out soon - and the first book (this one) is currently on sale for .99c in the 🇺🇸 kindle store

After being institutionalized as a teen for the magic he couldn‘t understand, Adam is returning to his family to help his possessed sister in law.

This is a fun new urban fantasy story, with a unique protagonist. Adam isn‘t overly powerful. He‘s gay, grew up physically abused and poor, and was forcibly institutionalized by his brother.

Fasincating magic, and the world has some interesting concepts that I can‘t wait to see more of. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I posted my first 'gist' on the Readerly app. Readerly is a new in development for readers and a possible alternative to Goodreads.

I have 3 invitations for the app, so if you're interested let me know your email and I will send you an invite.

My user name there is also LazyOwl.

LeticiaToraci Is it a free app? If yes, I would like an invite. 3y
LazyOwl @LeticiaToraci The app is free to use, but there is a subscription company to unlock additional features. I'm currently only using the free version. 3y

Slayton drops you right into the action of this dark, intense urban fantasy. Going between the point of view of two estranged brothers—Slayton introduces flawed, sympathetic characters whose complex relationship grows and changes as the book progresses.

Slayton has written a big-bad that feels truly sinister; a love triangle I actually enjoyed; and balanced the character growth with well-paced action and just the right amount of mystery.

Five star book was White Trash Warlock because it was fun and dark. The second best was The Only Good Indians which only received four stars because it was a slow read.

light pick. hit a bit of a recent reading slump and I've been having an issue with my book club's picks from the last few months not jiving with me, so this was pleasant. it's a B- urban fantasy story with a gay protagonist, which is a nice change of pace but I still wished there was a bit more substance to it. I get the appeal of urban fantasy titles in this vein but it's not really up my alley.

Adam has a troubled past & a troubled present. A brother who is selfish and hates him. A mother who doesn‘t understand and doesn‘t care to. Oh yeah and he is magical. And of course he is the only one who can save everyone. I enjoyed the flashbacks and how it related to present circumstances. I loved Adam the characters seemed well thought out. I hope I get to know Adam even better in book two. Adam may have problems but he‘s got a heart of gold.

This was so good-a perfect blend of urban fantasy and originality. I loved the characters and the setting, as well as the little Denver Easter Eggs the author put in. The romance was one of the cutest I‘ve read in a while-I‘m already Team Vic. Can‘t wait to read the next in the series.

Thank you to Blackstone Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC, in exchange for an honest review.

What a book! Adam Binder is forced to return to help the brother and mother who had him committed as a teen to put his magical powers to use saving his possessed sister-in-law. Can't how much I love the voice and characters and story! So many complicated characters and one cop with a heart of gold who I may or may not ship hard with the main character. Go ahead and add this to your TBR now and for ready for an incredible ride of a trilogy.
