Entitled
Entitled: How Male Privilege Hurts Women | Kate Manne
15 posts | 20 read | 30 to read
An urgent exploration of mens entitlement and how it serves to police and punish women, from the acclaimed author of Down Girl Kate Manne is a thrilling and provocative feminist thinker. Her work is indispensable.Rebecca Traister In this bold and stylish critique, Cornell philosopher Kate Manne offers a radical new framework for understanding misogyny. Ranging widely across the culture, from Harvey Weinstein and the Brett Kavanaugh hearings to Cat Person and the political misfortunes of Elizabeth Warren, Mannes book shows how privileged mens sense of entitlementto sex, yes, but more insidiously to admiration, care, bodily autonomy, knowledge, and poweris a pervasive social problem with often devastating consequences. In clear, lucid prose, Manne argues that male entitlement can explain a wide array of phenomena, from mansplaining and the undertreatment of womens pain to mass shootings by incels and the seemingly intractable notion that women are unelectable. Moreover, Manne implicates each of us in toxic masculinity: Its not just a product of a few bad actors; its something we all perpetuate, conditioned as we are by the social and cultural mores of our time. The only way to combat it, she says, is to expose the flaws in our default modes of thought while enabling women to take up space, say their piece, and muster resistance to the entitled attitudes of the men around them. With wit and intellectual fierceness, Manne sheds new light on gender and power and offers a vision of a world in which women are just as entitled as men to our collective care and concern.

This book made me angry, but Kate Manne delivers a well-researched, well supported look at male privilege. I liked how each chapter addressed a different area where male entitlement is harmful to women. The chapter, "Entitlement to Medical Care" really opened my eyes to things I knew were happening, but that I never truly thought about.

Excellent read for men and women.

Another book to boil my blood! I‘m on the section regarding health and statistically men get much better health care than women. Men get more pain relief, are taken more seriously and are regarded as stoic for their health battles. While women are still seen as hysterical and emotional and are much more frequently diagnosed with psychosomatic illnesses! As someone with multiple health problems this makes me so sad and angry 😡

Lindsays_books Omg I don‘t know if I could handle reading this! 😡 3y
Cazxxx The health part especially has been a real slog for me 3y

This is a terrific read. Manne explores how entitlement and men, alongside the misogyny directed at women (by both men and women) leads to unequal treatment and creates burden for women. She combines both social psychology research and writings on gender studies to support her conclusions. Well done.

Mitch Beautifully organised shelves 😻 3y
Hooked_on_books @Mitch Thank you! I starting facing books out because I needed more space and I loved it, so now it‘s my default shelf look. 3y

Just as well researched as her book Down Girl. Entitled is an academic treatise on male entitlement. Kate Manne presents facts on how societal norms of male entitlement unconsciously influence women‘s behavior even at the expense of their own physical and psychological safety. The book is well organized with lots of citations and references for further reading.

This book was good/interesting/important. I wish it had offered more in depth studies or explanations for the plethora of topics it covered. This book sort of read like a general overview about how women's lives are harder then men's and how oftentimes, men are the reason why women's lives are harder. It covered a large variety of subjects. Perhaps good for a reader who is new to the subject or not looking for detailed accounts.

A well researched and thorough examination of male entitlement, this book examines the many facets of how male privilege harms women in today‘s society. Kate Manne‘s ability to dissect the way that entitlement hovers over women in every aspect of women‘s lives was not only informative, but life changing. This book should be essential reading.

Good overview of male entitlement and it‘s fingerprints on so many aspects of daily life. Unfortunately, Manne has quite the treasure trove of examples to pull from to illustrate for the reader exactly how misogyny plays out in our country. The last chapter of the author‘s hope for her daughter was my favorite...and I‘d agree with every hope. We have some work to do.

Phenomenal. She dissects male entitlement in a methodical, logical, powerful way. She illuminates forms of entitlement and misogyny so deeply engrained that I never saw them before for what they are. Nor did I come to terms with how pernicious the impacts of entitlement are on society. Warnings: the book is triggering, sometimes breathtakingly so, and it left me feeling deep despair about the world, especially for women.

Kate Manne said my review was astute! Swoon. I had a great book to work with, as this is a fantastic book about a troubling subject. But if we don‘t look male privilege in the eye and call it for what it is, then we will never stop it. (All privilege, really, but this book is focused on how systemic misogyny aims to keep women down.) Pub on 8/11

BarbaraTheBibliophage My #nfornonfiction buddies might be interested in this. I found this WAY more approachable than Down Girl. Still Manne, still excellent! So if you ever hesitate to recommend that more academic book, here‘s your alternative. @tjwill @daniwithtea @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 4y
