Fifth Avenue, 5 Am: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman
Fifth Avenue, 5 Am: Audrey Hepburn, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and the Dawn of the Modern Woman | Sam Wasson
37 posts | 30 read | 43 to read
Before Breakfast at Tiffany's Audrey Hepburn was still a little-known actress with few film roles to speak of; after it - indeed, because of it - she was one of the world's most famous fashion, style and screen icons. It was this film that matched her with Hubert de Givenchy's little black dress. Meanwhile, Truman Capote's original novel is itself a modern classic selling huge numbers every year, and its high-living author of perennial interest. Now, this little book tells the story of how it all happened: how Audrey got the role (for which at first she wasn't considered, and which she at first didn't want); how long it took to get the script right; how it made Blake Edwards' name as a director after too many trashy films had failed to; and how Henry Mancini's soundtrack with its memorable signature tune 'Moon River' completed the irresistible package. This is the story of how one shy, uncertain, inexperienced young actress was persuaded to take on a role she at first thought too hard-edged and amoral - and how it made Audrey Hepburn into gamine, elusive Holly Golightly in the little black dress - and a star for the rest of her life.

This is the story of the making of the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany‘s”. This story hit at a time when job listings were posted under male & female; when women wore Betty Draper sherbet confections & black dresses, little or otherwise, were relegated to mourning and Hollywood villainesses. This is a good read about the challenges of the writers, producers and talent who brought this to screen.

Aims42 I‘ve had this one on my TBR stacks for a few years, sounds like I should move it towards the top 👍🏻 3y

This was a really fun read for me as it gives you all the little details behind how this book and movie came to be and about the growth of Hollywood and how they see/saw woman. Fans of Breakfast at Tiffany‘s should really enjoy this one.

I positively ADORED this book! I hardly ever read nonfiction but this one reads like fiction - it‘s so narrative and juicy and fun! The characters - everyone who had a role in the making of Breakfast at Tiffany‘s - all jump right off the page as Wasson pulls back the curtain on the whole filmmaking process. Highly recommend!!

Aims42 Oooo I‘ve had this on my TBR pile for over a year. I‘ll move it up now 👍🏻 4y

If you‘ve seen the movie Breakfast at Tiffany‘s, you may want to take a look at this book. Wasson writes a film history of the movie and how Holly Golightly became a status symbol for women. #AvenuesandAlleyways #Ayupaugust

Bailedbailed

Written in a breatless movie star magazine style, Wasson has sucked the magic out of Audrey Hepburn, something I never thought possible. And while the film Breakfast at Tiffany's has some major flaws (*koffMickeyRooneykoff*) it's also badly served. I found it unreadable.

RealBooks4ever Aww, that's too bad! 😕I'll tell my daughter to stay away from this one (she's crazy for celeb biographies!). 7y
tracyrowanreads @RealBooks4ever It's possible I'm in the minority on this one. Or that it calms down later in the book, but I found the prose to be heavy handed a "Woo! How amazing is THIS?"narrative. BTW if she doesn't already know, tell your daughter to steer clear of Darwin Porter who is one of the worst celeb biographers I ever saw. 7y

I really do adore this movie (except for Mickey Rooney - that makes me die inside every time I watch it). With all that's going on I needed a pick me up, and this book was perfect for how little it demanded of me. This book is pure fluff, told in quick tidbits of gossip and history, never really digging into any particular area. It was a great diversion, although it could have done with more photos to accompany the descriptions.

What to listen to on audio when you're on a mid-century kick and the book you're actually reading is the beautiful but emotionally taxing "In Cold Blood?" This little bon bon, that's what. A little Capote, a lot of Audrey, and fascinating insight into America and its women on the edge of change.

Mayread It's beautiful & emotionally taxing-- just in a different way. Damn you, Capote. 8y
