Before She Disappeared
Before She Disappeared: A Novel | Lisa Gardner
36 posts | 40 read | 14 to read
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Lisa Gardner, a propulsive thriller featuring an ordinary woman who will stop at nothing to find the missing people that the rest of the world has forgotten Frankie Elkin is an average middle-aged woman, a recovering alcoholic with more regrets than belongings. But she spends her life doing what no one else will--searching for missing people the world has stopped looking for. When the police have given up, when the public no longer remembers, when the media has never paid attention, Frankie starts looking. A new case brings her to Mattapan, a Boston neighborhood with a rough reputation. She is searching for Angelique Badeau, a Haitian teenager who vanished from her high school months earlier. Resistance from the Boston PD and the victim's wary family tells Frankie she's on her own--and she soon learns she's asking questions someone doesn't want answered. But Frankie will stop at nothing to discover the truth, even if it means the next person to go missing could be her.

This isn‘t a book I would normally pick up myself. My aunt was donating books and gave me a couple of these, so I gave them a read.
I thought it was an all right story. The writing was good and it kept me interested enough to want to find out what happened.

I'm enjoying this one well enough, though I'm a lot quicker to catch the clues than the characters, which feels wrong lol

I‘m a fan of Gardner‘s DD Warren books, so I picked this up at a thrift shop. Our heroine here isn‘t a cop, just a woman who wants to help find missing kids. She goes to Boston to investigate the disappearance of Angelique Badeau, and it soon becomes clear this is unlike any other “case” she‘s taken. While I highly doubt a civilian would be able to work with the police on a case like this, it was still a gripping read.

The title makes it sound more interesting than it was. Not necessarily a bad book, but not one I would read again.

#4thBookof2021 I really enjoy Lisa Gardner‘s books. This was one of a few 5⭐️ books from #April.
#5thBookof2021 Quite a few 4 1/2⭐️reads in May but only one 5⭐️. I listened to this for #PotterADay and Jim Dale captivates me every time. ⚡️

Ooh, this was excellent! Frankie Elkin is a recovering alcoholic who never stays in one place long and devotes her time to finding missing people. She's not law enforcement and has no formal training, but has a knack for asking the right questions even when local cops are less than enthusiastic at the prospect of her "amateur" help. I was hooked from the beginning, off balance the whole time, and never guessed the ending. 4.5⭐️

I did not guess whodunnit and certainly got drawn into the story.

A sober alcoholic tries to bring meaning to her life by working to find the missing. In this case, she is searching for a teenage girl who seemed to vanish from a Boston neighborhood almost a year ago. Why? And how did she seemingly vanish into thin air, not to be seen on any security camera near her school?

Just finished this suspense book. Definitely a good one. I always enjoy this author. This story focuses on a recovering alcoholic who travels the country to find missing persons when the police have all but stopped looking or moved on. This book brings her to a very rough part of Boston to find a teen who has been missing for 11 months. It's gritty and raw and hard to put down.

I had a lot of time to read today which doesn‘t happen often. So I finished this #LMPBC pick. It was so good! I didn‘t love the MC but I don‘t think you‘re supposed to. She‘s a recovering alcoholic who moves around and searches for missing persons. She definitely has an addict-type personality. It was very well done and I didn‘t figure it out before they told us what was up. Kept me guessing and on the edge of my seat until the end!

This is the 1st book I‘ve read of Gardner‘s. If this is the start of a new series by her, I will read the future books. It made for a good listen, to follow Frankie as she searched for Angelique. The suspense was good. The prose was a bit repetitive at times but it was still well paced. I didn‘t know people living nomadically searching for missing people was a thing. I wonder where the next one will take Frankie.

With Fitz keeping me company in case I got scared, I finished up this round‘s #LMPBC mystery last night! It was good, and I hope the rest of my group likes it too. I enjoyed reading your comments, @Annie1215 ! I felt a little distracted during parts of it, which I‘m chalking up to my ever-present job search. But overall Gardner did a solid job and some of the plot points were really clever! I liked Emmanuel and Lotham best.

Off to @Pogue now!

58 of 2021. Day 3 and book 3 for #awesomeapril. Frankie is a woman with a messy past looking for redemption by looking for missing people. She travels to Boston to investigate the disappearance of a high school girl. There are plenty of twists and suspense to keep you engaged in the story. Great read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I finished this book in about two days. I was very interested in the plot line and I actually loved the character dynamics. The only let down for me was the ending. It felt predictable and lackluster. Overall, a very good mystery book.

After a challenging month of no reading time, it feels great to post a review! 😆

This round for #lmpbc I am in a group reading mystery, which is new for me.

I thought this one was very engaging and a great intro to mystery for me. I often found myself so engrossed I forgot to take notes.

It feels good to get a book off my #bookspinbingo board

This was a satisfying read. It was a different type of thriller for me. It had plenty of action, but there were a lot of scenes where the reader received information about the narrator through her conversations with others and her own musings. Her addiction and recovery were treated respectfully, and I appreciate the fact that all the characters were “real” people, with good and bad character traits. #Libby #Kindle

LiteraryinLawrence I‘ll be reading this with my #lmpbc this round and I‘m really looking forward to it! 3y

This is a MUST READ! Frankie Elkin roams around the US, looking for missing persons who everyone has given up on. The cops have moved on, the media never bothered and even their families have given up hope!
Frankie asks questions nobody's asked before. She's now looking for Angelique Badeau, missing from Mattapan, Boston, since 11 months. Can she find her?

I was surprised to find this was a stand alone as it felt like the first book in a series, where you start getting all the clues of a past life etc.
I enjoyed it and it had a good plot. Just wasn‘t vintage Gardner. Author even mentioned how difficult it was to write during the pandemic, I guess pandemic brain gets to us all.

Reading Before She Disappeared now. The other 2 are looking interesting for the rest of the week.

Thank you Net Galley and Dutton Publishing for this ARC. Maybe my expectations were too high, but this didn‘t feel up to the quality I normally expect from Gardner. It‘s definitely a page turner but Frankie doesn‘t feel like a fully flushed out character and there are some weird plot decisions. The first chapter is also so bad that I almost quit before the story even really started.
