This was an entertaining listen, with all the twists and turns. Weak women frustrate me though, and I found myself irritated, more often then not. If you‘re looking for a strong female protagonist — this isn‘t for you. There‘s also a repetitive quirk where the lead character exclaims “Stop. Stop. Stop!” You get tired of hearing it every chapter or so (or at least I did.) This is a good book, but stops short of being a great one.

There was so much potential here but the opportunities to explore darkness and set up interesting unreliable narrator twists was ignored in favor of tropes and needless repetition (“Stop! Stop! Stop!”). It gets a so so just because I flew through it wanting to know the end, hoping I‘d be surprised. I wasn‘t.

LitLaur Yes! 👏🏻👏🏻 I thought I was the only one super-annoyed by the “Stop. Stop. Stop!” Ugh. 2w

I would have bailed, but it's for book club.

Very slow start, lots of boring sections, terrible dialog, kind of got interesting near the end, but the ending was garbage.

The 1st and last 50 pages of the book are well written and very engaging. Atmospheric and wild. However, the pacing in the middle was pretty rough. I felt for a thriller that this moved very slowly.I couldn‘t wait to get to the end of it because I wanted to know how it ended but it took Emily so long to discover the truth about Kristen. But perhaps what Emily discovered isn‘t even the truth. With this book and it‘s unreliable narrator.. who knows?

I had no idea what to expect from this book. I picked it from the library solely because it was on a recommended book list. I‘m so glad I did! This book is a mystery/thriller that keeps you guessing until the last page. The main character finds herself involved in a series of crimes, a boundary-less best friend and a hard time finding fact from fiction. Great read!

This started out really good. Fast and intense. But honestly, there's only so long you can keep that up without really adding anything to the plot, and by the end I was just ready for it to be over.

**note, this is not my favorite genre, so others who love this sort of book might feel differently.

I finished this one a couple days ago but it‘s been spinning in my head ever since. This is the story of two friends turned enemies over the terrible secrets they share. It kind of plays out as: Who‘s the psycho bitch? You decide! This thrilling read about gaslighting had me questioning my own sanity with all the turns it took. Personally I am not against WTF endings but make it make sense 😅

MatchlessMarie There was also a prequel chapter written, if anyone would like yet another twist to this story. https://bit.ly/3Lc0A9x 3mo
5feet.of.fury Yeah this one got pretty bonkers 😂 3mo
MatchlessMarie @5feet.of.fury right? I only gave this one a so so rating but it‘s one that would be interesting to reread for analysis rather than pleasure 😂 🧐 3mo

I want a fan. It started good and I was excited to keep reading. Then it just got boring for way too long. The ending was more exciting but once the action started back up it was like the author just wanted to keep us confused instead of telling the story. ⭐️⭐️

If you enjoy true crime podcasts, get this one in audiobook form. The narrator does an excellent job telling the story, I often forgot it was fiction and started to piece together details like I do when I listen to podcasts. The twist comes pretty early in the story so I was a bit let down by that but it still held up.

1st review of the year! This audiobook started out as a pretty intriguing thriller - an attack, murder, a coverup, and more! - and then transitions into more of a mystery as we try to unravel which of these two friends is telling the truth about what happened, what secrets are they both hiding, and which friend is in more danger from the other. The “twists” were pretty predictable and the ending was just confusing. Feeling generous so 🌟🌟🌟🌟

An addictive psychological thriller about best friends Emily & Kristen who cover up a murder while on vacation in Chile after one of them is attacked. The previous year they found themselves in a similar situation. Do they have terrible luck or is something more sinister at work? Really enjoyed this one.

I enjoyed listening to this thriller about two friends and their relationship. Which one is a murderous sociopath? How reliable is the narrator? Which friend is the controlling force in the relationship? The plot doesn‘t always hold together, but it kept my interest. This will be one of those fun books that I spent some enjoyable hours with, but will soon forget. Does anyone else enjoy thrillers and mysteries as quick comfort reads?

BarbaraBB I definitely do, but I am often disappointed in the end. However I am always on the lookout for thrillers and mysteries! 5mo

I was so into the beginning of this story of best friends! The exotic locations they visit, the tight friendship and their backstory were all high points. At some point, things went downhill a bit but I was still fully engaged during the fallout of some horrible events the two went through together. The very end brought the entire novel into question. Motivations and reliability come into question throughout and especially at the end.

kplovesbooks So. True. I didn't even know what to think after I read that ending!! So many questions! 5mo

An intense page turner about a female friendship spanning many years and continents. Their travel adventures bring them to points a reader couldn‘t imagine. Told in an unconventional timeline with flashbacks and true to life memory fog turned clear. I was glued to the pages. Suspense, friendship, & introspection abound.

At 50%, I was really annoyed. I hate repetition. It makes me feel like the author doesn‘t trust me to put things together on my own. But! I was invested enough to find out if I was right about the ending. I actually guessed most of the plot twists, but the ones I didn‘t gave me whiplash. I think we‘ve all had that toxic friendship (or several) that we desperately wanted to end, but then found filled some unidentified need. Spot on!

Emily and Kristen are best friends who would do anything for each other. Even help hide a dead body.

Literally.

This story was a shining example of gaslighting and had a very strong opening. Certainly an easy read but the ending left me wanting something…different. I just was not completely satisfied - probably because I felt like the build up was worth something more!

Loved the “ride or die” friendship mentality the girls had with each other.

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this one but I quite enjoyed it! Solid premise - what happens when you realize the relationship with your best friend is toxic, and there's no good way to end things because she's controlling and literally knows where the bodies are buried. Things slowly begin to unravel, and the tension built nicely. I just thought the ending dropped the ball a bit. I see why Reese picked it up, would be a good movie! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

marleed Haha - I have fun reading the Reese and Jenna picks. It seems to me Jenna picks books ripe for a bookclub discussion. But with Reese, I can‘t help but to cast every character for adaption to screen. It‘s rather fun because I don‘t often do that with my reads. 7mo
5feet.of.fury I liked this one, too. I agree about the ending, though, a couple wtf moments left hanging there. 7mo

I really enjoyed this one!! I haven‘t read Bartz‘s previous novels but I want to now! This is about the dark side of friendship & traumatic events that bind them. I really enjoyed Emily‘s narration & u could really root for her. As the story unfolds her BFF Kristen becomes more & more possessive & suffocating. The tension really escalated throughout & then it all comes to a head. This would make a great movie or mini series. I recommended it!
