At 50%, I was really annoyed. I hate repetition. It makes me feel like the author doesn‘t trust me to put things together on my own. But! I was invested enough to find out if I was right about the ending. I actually guessed most of the plot twists, but the ones I didn‘t gave me whiplash. I think we‘ve all had that toxic friendship (or several) that we desperately wanted to end, but then found filled some unidentified need. Spot on!

😳 If you've read this, let's talk about that ending!

kplovesbooks Lol 😂 That ending was 🤯🤯🤯 It made me question so much of what had happened before! 3w
EvieBee @kplovesbooks Funny, I expected that ending! I wondered if they both had had a taste of murder and were forever changed. Your thoughts? (edited) 2d
kplovesbooks @EvieBee Really?? You're the first person I've heard say that! It is an interesting thought. And I could see if it was just her. But what about the guy? She just happened to start dating a guy who also had homicidal tendencies too? And did they conspire to kill her friend or was that an actual accident? I didn't know what to think. 2d

Emily and Kristen are best friends who would do anything for each other. Even help hide a dead body.

Literally.

This story was a shining example of gaslighting and had a very strong opening. Certainly an easy read but the ending left me wanting something…different. I just was not completely satisfied - probably because I felt like the build up was worth something more!

Loved the “ride or die” friendship mentality the girls had with each other.

5feet.of.fury Agree, there‘s a few loose ends. A fun one though. 1mo

I've seen a lot of mixed reviews on this one but I quite enjoyed it! Solid premise - what happens when you realize the relationship with your best friend is toxic, and there's no good way to end things because she's controlling and literally knows where the bodies are buried. Things slowly begin to unravel, and the tension built nicely. I just thought the ending dropped the ball a bit. I see why Reese picked it up, would be a good movie! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

marleed Haha - I have fun reading the Reese and Jenna picks. It seems to me Jenna picks books ripe for a bookclub discussion. But with Reese, I can‘t help but to cast every character for adaption to screen. It‘s rather fun because I don‘t often do that with my reads. 2mo
5feet.of.fury I liked this one, too. I agree about the ending, though, a couple wtf moments left hanging there. 2mo
swishandflick @marleed I completely agree, that's the perfect differentiation between the two! I always find myself picturing how Reese's picks would translate to film/tv 😂 (edited) 2mo

I really enjoyed this one!! I haven‘t read Bartz‘s previous novels but I want to now! This is about the dark side of friendship & traumatic events that bind them. I really enjoyed Emily‘s narration & u could really root for her. As the story unfolds her BFF Kristen becomes more & more possessive & suffocating. The tension really escalated throughout & then it all comes to a head. This would make a great movie or mini series. I recommended it!

kplovesbooks It WOULD make a really cool movie!! 2mo

Thanks for the Tag @DarkMina

1. Teal/blue
2. No, but I looked at my shelf for color trends to confirm: I think there‘s typical just trends in merchandising. Female driven mysteries/domestic thrillers are typically blue hues with pink or yellow pops and male driven action/horror are red and black.

So if I want to read a family drama murder mystery (I do), it‘ll probably be my favorite color.

A pair of bffs plan a yearly escape to an exotic locale (written w/enough detail to transport you there, but not bog the book down). In Cambodia, 1 of the duo invites a male traveler for a romantic encounter &he turns violent. He ends up dead(no sympathy from me)&they disappear. then something similar happens in Chile.. are they a beacon for bad luck? who is really to blame?
Enjoyable
A few loose details that left me ⁉️

⭐⭐⭐⭐ This one really latched onto my brain and dug in; very enjoyable slow burn thriller. ...But. That ending. 🤯 WHAT?! Cannot process. I don't even know what to do with it. It brings up so many more questions of HOW, then WHY, and more HOW?! Idk. 🤷🤔😲🤯

5feet.of.fury Who really killed Sebastian? What was with the rohypnol? After Jamie‘s death is explained it makes so much sense and then it gets crazy again. 😂 2mo
kplovesbooks @5feet.of.fury Right??! And DID she and Aaron in fact try to shut Kristen up and kill her?! Because now that makes sense since they're off celebrating by planning to get by with more murder!! So. Crazy. It's the twist that really leaves you twisted!!🤦😂 2mo
5feet.of.fury Yeah that last page 😳 I don‘t think Aaron was in on it in Phoenix, but might have intentionally tried to mow her down because she was a murder suspect and overall creep. So crazy. Who knows. Lol 2mo

What a disappointment! I was into the premise of the story with such a strong beginning! I delved into the first five chapters-and then-it took a downward fall full of uneventful dialogue and details. I felt like narrator was just dragging on with no direction. This story could have been cut by 100 pages or so, which might have made the plot more eventful and thrilling.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was filled with slow-building anxiety and dread while reading this, but couldn‘t look away! It‘s a psychological thriller that‘s both pulse-pounding and thought-provoking; a chilling look at toxic friendship and power with razor-sharp insight to how the world tries to keep women‘s lives small and fearful.

I would love to hear what others think about the ending - I‘ll post my spoiler thoughts in the comments! #reesesbookclub #BOTM

ICantImReading I‘ve been mulling over the ending, and here‘s my take on it: I don‘t think they‘re planning on killing anyone; I think Emily has just harnessed her inner power. “Joan” allows her to shed her fearful, obedient, “Midwestern nice” persona. She now knows that if danger arises, she can handle herself, so she can let go of her fear and be free. 3mo
BookwormAHN I was also thinking that they may have been scared that someone would recognize their names. 3mo

It's taken a week to slog through this & now I'm finished I don't know what to say. The premise is good but it didn't quite live up to its promise. For a thriller it was a bit tedious. The MC was as limp as they come, until the last couple chapters when we're left even more unsure of the truth rather than having things cleared up. And that last line...WTF???
Also Reese and Modern Mrs Darcy have really been letting me down this year. I think ⬇️

I feel meh about this one. I don‘t get the hype or the 5 ⭐️ reviews. I mean it was ok but not one I‘d say rush out and pick up. Once again wondering if I want to continue blindly picking up a Reese Book Club selection. Emily and Kristen take girl‘s trips and dead bodies seem to turn up around them. Is it a case of self defense or something else? ⭐️⭐️⭐️
