Panpan

This is the first Agatha Christie book I‘ve panned. The mystery itself was good but that ending. If you‘ve read it and are human, you get it. The issue has nothing to do with Poirot but a couple of the characters. Just nope!

The story follows Hercule Poirot as he untangles the family history of a young widow and those who would rather she weren't the sole inheritor of her second husband's fortune.

I enjoyed this Poirot mystery up until the ending. The twists and turns were all interesting, and Poirot was less irritating and full of himself than he sometimes is (mellowing with age? How old is he by now, anyway? He has to be ancient), but that ending normalizes domestic violence rather more than I'm comfortable with.

So much family drama in this one! Christie portrays such unlikeable yet interesting characters that it's difficult to discern everyone's motives until it's too late.

The relatives of a very wealthy man who was killed in the Blitz shortly after marrying a widow and before he had a chance to make a new will start to wonder if his wife's first husband really did die.

I did recognise a clue but not its significance, just thought I hadn't been paying enough attention earlier.

I‘ve read this before but not for a few years. I liked it again! It‘s a Poirot book but he features very little in it. It‘s about a large family whose patriarch died leaving a young widow. Now she is the one who will get the money the rest of the family feels entitled to. Then lots of things ensue, of course.

My first book done for #scarathlon #teamslaughter
This is one of Christie‘s stories where you get to know the characters in the first half & Poirot shows up halfway through. I thought the mystery was good, but the last chapter after the murder is solved sucked. @Clwojick

Working on my haul from Half-Price Books - I bought like three Agatha Christie novels. There were definitely some twists in here I didn‘t see coming, but I gave it a so-so because of the love triangle that happens in the story. Without spoiling anything, let‘s just say the girl involved really shouldn‘t be with either of the men! They‘re both kind of terrible and I don‘t like how either of them treat her, but the mystery part of the book was good!

This particular story introduces Poirot early, but then he doesn't appear again for a third of the book. I like how that adds depth to the characters, but I find I prefer less drama and more investigation in a lot of my mysteries. This was emphasized by the fact that the characters are uninteresting liars. I also felt discomfort at the other crimes swept under the rug, the violence in all the romances, and these potential criminals got a win. Meh.

It is a real puzzler - plenty of clues and characters to muddy the waters - for that reason it is a pick. However, this one isn't one of my favorites. And the end is ... different.

I read this last night in practically one sitting, and I'd forgotten how quick and easy Christie novels can be. The mystery was fun to figure out, but 1940s gender politics and domestic violence didn't age quite as well. Now I kind of just want to check out a stack of these from the library and binge. #comfortreads #herculepoirot

I love the time period they're set in, I love the characters & I love how everything is just put together so perfectly. Dame Agatha is right up on top of my favourite authors list, plus she was an amazing woman in an era where women were not valued that much as strong independent people.✊️

I'm finally getting back into my Poirot series read, and these later books are virtually all new to me. They're the TV adaptations that I've seen the least, and I'm starting to dread the end of the series. (My parents and I adore this show and my Dad died just before the last 3 shows aired, haven't been able to watch them at all!) At any rate, I really enjoyed this twisted mystery, and had no idea whodunnit! Rowley sure is a weird guy, though. 4⭐️

Lizpixie This is in my top three Dame Agatha novels! Yes, Rowley is a strange one, but David is the devil himself.😈 7y
LauraBrook @Lizpixie It's up in the top for me too so far. I still have all of Marple, her Mary Westmacott ones, and the rest of Poirot, plus standalones. David is so the devil! And WTF was wrong with Lynn that those were her only two choices!?! Still, a cracking good story, and one I'd like to reread again. 7y
Readerann I am dreading the day when I'm finished with all of Dame Christie's books. Guess I'll just have to start re-reading! 7y

#LyricalApril #day8 #AmIWrong in thinking that Dame Agatha is the undisputed Queen Of Crime? Her books were original, inspiring & very clever. She inspired so many authors, she's on the favourite author lists of millions of people worldwide, the only books that have outsold her is The Bible & Shakespeare. And she was an avid surfer🏄🏼‍♀️as well!

I'm giving this a pick overall. The mystery as a whole was good. I've given up trying to figure these out haha, I'm always wrong. The epilogue is a complete disaster, but if you shave off everything after the murderer is revealed, it's a good book.

This has to be my favourite of all of Dame Agathas stories. At the very least, it's up there with Death On The Nile, A Murder Is Announced & And Then There Were None, all her best work.In David Hunter, she has a brilliant villain in the form of a bad boy. The kind of man sensible women go stupid for, kind that enjoy war & killing but go crazy in peace. If you're looking for a Christie to start with, you can't go wrong with this. #christiescrimeclub
