The Corfu Trilogy
The Corfu Trilogy | Gerald Durrell
24 posts | 9 read | 2 reading | 29 to read
The trilogy that inspired ITV's six part television series The Durrells. Three classic tales of childhood on an island paradise - My Family and Other Animals, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods by Gerald Durrell - are available in a single edition for the first time in The Corfu Trilogy. Just before the Second World War the Durrell family decamped to the glorious, sun-soaked island of Corfu where the youngest of the four children, ten-year-old Gerald, discovered his passion for animals: toads and tortoises, bats and butterflies, scorpions and octopuses. Through glorious silver-green olive groves and across brilliant-white beaches Gerry pursued his obsession . . . causing hilarity and mayhem in his ever-tolerant family. Durrell's memories of those enchanted days gave rise to these three classic tales, loved by generations of adults and children alike, which are now available in one volume for the first time. 'He has an uncanny knack of discovering human as well as animal eccentrics' Sunday Telegraph 'A delightful book full of simple, well-known things: cicadas in the olive groves, lamp fishing at night, the complexities of fish and animals - but, above all, childhood moulded by these things' New York Times

#AdventRecommends December 3rd

This might be a bit of a cheat, but I adored this trilogy about the Durrells. The kids that are following their own heart and the saint of a mother. And all their family friends. Their all some characters. The series is lovely as well

Three books of the author's memories from the time in his childhood when he and his family spent 4 years in Corfu before the Second World War.

From this distance it sounds like an idyllic time as the budding naturalist goes off exploring the beautifully described local scenery and wildlife, for the most part by himself apart from his dogs and also once a week a local doctor, who was something of a polymath. 👎

rwmg The books are also full of hilarious anecdotes involving his family (his mother, two brothers and one sister), their visitors, and the animals the author collected. 2y

I have read some fabulous books but have had a slow reading year sadly. Most people have a bedside pile of books to read..mine is a whole bookshelf😬🤔 Lots of reading pleasure ahead!
My time has been spent at work in our ICU and spending time unwinding in my garden and vegetable patch. I have enjoyed sharing our farm-life on our Instagram cornbury_park which is the name of our property.
Hope you are making some time to read..I am planning to✅

rwmg This has been lingering on my virtual TBR shelf for far too long 2y
lynneamch Mine, too @rwmg. I binge-watched The Durrells in Corfu on Amazon Prime and loved every minute of it. 2y
kspenmoll Your garden looks gorgeous. I would make the same choice. What a lovely place for respite, recovery, renewal. I cannot thank you enough for all you do for us at work. 💕 2y

Avoiding the virus and sidelined with a broken leg gives me plenty of reading time. Also taking advantage of Amazon Prime #booktofilm. Loved all of these: Tess of the D'Urbervilles, #Middlemarch, #TheMoonstone, and The Durrells (based on The Corfu Trilogy). Now I'll need to read the biography by Michael Haag.

readordierachel Sorry about your leg. Hope it heals quickly! 4y
lynneamch Thanks @readordierachel . Mistake thinking I should try waterskiing after a 30 year hiatus. Just trying to be a cool grandma. 😎 4y

#adventrecommends day 8!

I first read all of these in my teens and love all his books, but I‘m going to kick off with the first in the Corfu trilogy. I still haven‘t checked out the TV show; might be an idea for my off-time over xmas (I close up because dealing with last minute shoppers is not worth the cash).

We are big fans of the Durrells in Corfu show and I downloaded for free the book it was based on... my 10 year old son is reading it on my kindle as we take the bus to head into Manhattan to see the Rockettes at Radio City. #raisingreaders #startingtheholidayseason

LinesUponAPage Great way to start it off public transit and a good book. Enjoy the day! 4y

Gerald Durrell writes about #WildCreatures (his odd family included) in such a wonderfully witty and nostalgic way. The Corfu Trilogy is one of my favourite “comfort” reads. ❤️

Billypar Not on my radar, but curious to try! 5y
Cinfhen It‘s always been on my radar but I‘ve never picked them up!!! I love all the witty titles (edited) 5y
batsy I need to read this! Love these covers 😍 5y
BookNAround I loved the first two of these and need to get to the third! 5y
LeahBergen @saresmoore 😂😂 I think you‘ll like his portrayal of his brother, Larry (he who became the uber-literary Lawrence Durrell, writer of the Alexandria Quartet). He‘s this irritatingly snobby older brother, always pecking away at his typewriter and yelling at Gerry. 5y
LeahBergen @Jerdencon They‘re wonderful! I‘ve been enjoying the show, too. Be forewarned, though - the books are much more from Gerry‘s point of view and about his animals. 5y
LeahBergen @LauraBeth I think you‘ll like them! They‘re sweet and a bit silly (and would make for a good palate cleanser between tougher reads). 😘 5y
LeahBergen @Aimeesue 😆😆 5y
LeahBergen @Aims42 It IS a sign! 😆😆 5y
LeahBergen @Billypar @Cinfhen I hope you give the first one a try some day. They are a strange mix of animal science and obnoxious family anecdotes. 😆 5y
LeahBergen @batsy I think you‘d appreciate the silliness of it. 😆 5y
LeahBergen @BookNAround The third isn‘t quite as a good as the others but I‘d read anything just to hear more about that family! 5y

Years ago when I was on a book tour, the brilliant bookseller and reader Elayne Carringer suggested I read MY FAMILY AND OTHER ANIMALS. I loved it. Now, this gift from two great friends (you know who you are): the other two novels in the trilogy. Diving in tonight and so grateful that I have so many pals with great taste in books. Thanks to all three of these amazing people who make the world a little better each day. #amreading #grateful

Haha, I'm loving the colorfulness of this. The Corfu Trilogy was the most popular of Gerald Durrell's (the three across the top). They were made into a PBS mini-series twice though I favor the first one. He is a wonderfully humorous writer of stories from his life as a naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist and author.

Enjoyed this book, in particular the funny verging on ridiculous stories about his families escapades whilst living in Corfu (it did make me wonder how much was embellished!) But it made me laugh out loud at times. I did find some of the descriptions of the animals a little too much at times, probably didn't need to go into so much description but I guess this shows his enthusiasm.

I inhaled Mr Durrell's books as a young adult. They fed my deep love of animals. I did not become a zoologist but am so excited to rediscover his books because I still have a deep connection with animals. The television show is coming soon to PBS also! So excited!
