When the Moon Is Low
When the Moon Is Low: A Novel | Nadia Hashimi
By turns astonishing, frightening, and triumphant, When the Moon Is Low chronicles one brave Afghan woman's odyssey to save her familyIn Kabul, we meet Fereiba, a schoolteacher who puts her troubled childhood behind her when she finds love in an arranged marriage. But Fereiba's comfortable life implodes when the Taliban rises to power and her family becomes a target of the new fundamentalist regime. Forced to flee with her three children, Fereiba has one hope for survival: to seek refuge with her sister's family in London.Traveling with forged papers and depending on the kindness of strangers, Fereiba and the children make a dangerous crossing into Iran under cover of darkness, the start of a harrowing journey that reduces her from a respected wife and mother to a desperate refugee.Eventually they fall into the shadowy underground network of the undocumented who haunt the streets of Europe's cities. And then, in a busy market square in Athens, their fate takes a frightening turn when Fereiba's teenage son, Saleem, becomes separated from the rest of the family. Without his mother, Saleem is forced, abruptly and unforgivingly, to come of age in a world of human trafficking and squalid refugee camps.Heartbroken, Fereiba has no choice but to continue on with only her daughter and baby. Mother and son cross border after perilous border, risking their lives in the hope of finding a place where they can be reunited.

Fereiba & her kids must flee Afghanistan once the Taliban takes control & murders her husband. This is a cross continent story of them trying to get to her sister in London. When her son, Saleem is separated from her she must leave him behind to save her newborn who needs medical help. I liked it being told from Saleem & Fereiba‘s perspective but I do wish Saleem‘s wasn‘t in 3rd person, took me out a bit. Liked the ambiguity of the ending tho.

#Two4Tuesday - Does the title of a book influence your decision to read or purchase it?
Thanks for the tag @TheSpineView @DarkMina and @kspenmoll 💕

I‘m often moved by the mere title of a book. Sometimes the title reads like a first line of poetry. It is immediately heartbreaking or joyful or possesses a hip vibe. I‘m hypnotized and pulled into the story before I even open the book to commence reading.👇🏽

Nute I already want to go the distance trusting the author to deliver on the words (the seeming message) laid bare across the cover of the book… ever hopeful with unquestioning wide eyed curiosity that the author intends to take me on a magnificent journey.

Examples of lovely titles:
- When the Moon Is Low
- We Begin at the End
- Tonight No Poetry Will Serve
- All Creatures Great and Small
- Speak, Silence
- In Every Mirror She‘s Black

👇🏽
3y
Nute - ‘Til the Well Runs Dry
- The Lonely Londoners
- The Prince of Mournful Thoughts
- Landscape in Sunlight
- The Well of Loneliness
- A Place to Hang the Moon
- Build Your House Around My Body
- The Hidden Light of Objects
- But Some of Us Are Brave
- Where Angels Fear to Tread

Santie Now that I think about it, this has happened to me, yes. Examples of titles that have moved me are : Their Eyes Were Watching God, Veronica Decides to Die, By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept, When Breath Becomes Air, Go Set a Watchman. Do you get excited when the book title is mentioned in the book? 3y
Nute @SantieWantie I‘m so flummoxed that I failed to mention Their Eyes Were Watching God, When Breath Becomes Air and By the River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept. Such lovely book titles! 3y

Book 153 About a family of refugees fleeing Iran for England. A mother, with her three children, leaves Kabul after her husband is killed by the Taliban. The first half is told from her perspective, while the second oscillates between her's and her teenage son's. It's a good story of what humankind will do to preserve life and a salient commentary on belonging and refuge. While not without merit, the writing and storytelling could be improved.

A very good book, though it took me a while to get into it (again, not sure that says anything about the book, could just be me these days). Sad and moving.

The story of a mother and her three children who leave Afghanistan after the Taliban take over and kill her husband. Their journey as refugees trying to make their way to England is filled with danger and anguish but also with kindnesses as they cross paths with others. The ending is abrupt which might be appropriate but is also a bit unsatisfying after starting to care deeply for this family. Still very much a pick. #booked2020

alisiakae Great review! This could also work for the #parentandchild memoir prompt. 5y

Mehso-so

I read this book because I loved The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns so I wanted to read about Afghanistan from the view point of a different author. The beginning was beautiful and had an interesting twist. However, by the end I felt like it was hard to read and I tolerated the last few chapters. I am so disappointed in the ending. It's not how I wanted the last page to be. Maybe some people could appreciate the cliffhanger like ending.

Fereiba, her husband, and three kids live in Afghanistan. Fereiba is a school teacher and her husband works for the power/water company. They are living a happy and comfortable life when, all of a sudden, the Taliban rises to power. Their family gets targeted by this fundamentalist regime and decides they must flee to London for their own survival. This is a very powerful story of family, loss, and survival. It really touched my heart.

The downside to #bookmail - when you have no idea one of the books is going to be “miniature”! These are for a gift and the different sizes are bothering me! Why is it so little? I hope my friend has good eyesight as the font is tiny 🤓

erzascarletbookgasm I think the small one is mass paperback edition, which I try to avoid because the font size is so small! 7y
CouronneDhiver It‘s a great book though! 7y
JillR I think you might be right @erzascarletbookgasm , it didn‘t say when I ordered it (at least I don‘t think it did!) Although I‘d have ordered it anyway as it was the only version I could find at the time... 7y

Beautiful, moving story of an Afghani family who is forced to flee their home because of the Taliban. The author skillfully depicts the plight of immigrants and the stress and hardships they face as they cross borders.

Jabberwocky River of stars is amazing!! Guy Gavriel Kay was my favourite new to me author of 2017, hope you love the book!! 7y

Jabberwocky @llwheeler I have actually very carefully rationed his books for myself. I wanted to stretch them all out for as long as possible because each one is so amazing and I wanted to have them to look forward to for a long time. I just finished the Sarantine mosaic (so good!!) and only have the fionavir tapestry & a song for Arbonne left. 7y
