Dick and Jane were the original Easy readers. The books we all make fun of now with “See Spot Run“ helped usher in reading skills for millions of kids. We now ask you to look beyond them and try some different types of Easy Readers

The #ThrowbackReadathon begins one week from today! Reread your favorite books from your childhood, use our hashtag on your posts to connect with other nostalgia-seekers, tag @Clwojick & I, & share your favorite throwback pics along the way!

This week‘s discussion question is: Which book are you MOST excited to return to (& why)? Is it the first book you‘re reading, or are you saving it? Share this post & your answer!

(My response below 🤗👇🏻)

monalyisha I honestly can‘t wait to revisit “Into the Land of the Unicorns” by Bruce Coville. It‘s neither the most literary (Madeline L‘Engle) nor the least literary (Babysitter‘s Club) of my picks, but it *was* my first introduction to some of the most basic fantasy vocabulary (including the words “amulet” and “sanctuary”, I weirdly & specifically remember). I‘m not reading it first; I don‘t want to peak too early. 😉 (edited) 6y
CocoReads I was planning on a Little House reread this year so I‘m definitely going to read Little House in the Big woods at some point. Haven‘t really figured out what else. 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @monalyisha Oh that's SUCH a good pick. Loved that book. 6y

vivastory I'm planning on going to the movie theater the weekend of the throwback to catch a documentary about one of my childhood favorites 6y
monalyisha @vivastory Whaaaat?! That sounds amazing! I‘m going to have to look it up. 6y
vivastory It's playing at a local annual horror film festival called Panic Fest. Really looking forward to it! 6y
monalyisha @vivastory Oh, you better believe I researched that hard. Haha. I can‘t imagine that I‘ll have impetus to exclaim this again but, “Oh, to live in Kansas City!” 6y
vivastory 😂😂 6y
Lizpixie The Wizard Of Oz! I would‘ve loved to buy the Oz boxset by then but it‘s $120😱 I hope it‘s as good as I remember🤞 Plus the Narnia books, which I do have a boxset of. 6y
monalyisha @Lizpixie I‘m interested in the Oz books... mostly because I‘ve heard they‘re MESSED UP. 😅 #chopfyt (edited) 6y

It‘s time for our weekly #ThrowbackReadathon Discussion Question!

The adult who most impacted my early reading life was my grandpa. He‘d sit me on his lap every day & read to me... never mind that he was reading the newspaper.😂 It‘s pretty funny considering my (admittedly shameful) lack of attention to current events now.

My 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Lee, also deserves a shoutout. She introduced me to “Bridge to Terabithia” - & creative writing!

CocoReads Probably my dad. I remember him reading many books to me when I was younger, my mom left when I was 5 and although he remarried when I was 8 there were a few years when it was him and my sister and me. And various family members to help since he was in the navy at the time. But he took me to get my library card and when I “outgrew” the kids reading room, started me with his copy of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. 6y
JackieSmith My mom took me to the library once a week when I was little (& through elementary school—then I took myself!). My favorite book was In the Rabbit Garden by Leo Lionni. I‘d check it out 3x (the legal limit) & then hide it behind the stacks for a week until our next visit. 6y
monalyisha @CocoReads Sounds like he did an awesome job! “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” is one of those books that I read way back when & need to revisit. 😊 6y
monalyisha @JackieSmith I like your style. You ain‘t nobody‘s fool. 😅 6y
CocoReads @monalyisha it‘s my favorite-I revisit every couple of years. 😍📚 6y

Peep 👀 my shelves in preparation for 2 very radical Readathon events in January: the #LetsGetGraphic Weeklong Marathon hosted by @Clwojick & @TricksyTails & the #ThrowbackReadathon hosted by @Clwojick &... me!🙀

Titles I‘m most excited for are: Buffy Season 8, Lumberjanes, The Wendy Project, This One Summer, Saga, & The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Also, A Ring of Endless Light, Goosebumps, & Into the Land of the Unicorns.📚

Clwojick Yessss!!!!!! My shelves are stuffed with my TBR for the January events! 6y
Clwojick I ended up grabbing another 6-8 books on Monday for the #ThrowbackReadathon, and I'm heading to the thrift store on my lunch for more. 😂 CANT RESIST 50% OFF 6y
monalyisha @Clwojick Ha! I‘m thankful for my library system. I think I have waaaaayyy more graphic novels than I could possibly manage. But I wanted to make sure I‘d have options! Who knows what I‘ll like? 🤷‍♀️ 6y
See All 11 Comments
Bookzombie I have been building up a graphic novel pile from the library and I‘m saving my Hoopla checkouts for right at the end of December so I can have them out long enough for the readathon. 🤓 Need to start requesting for the Throwback readathon too. 6y
monalyisha @Bookzombie It‘s a wonderful time of the year (the most wonderful?)! 🤗 (edited) 6y
CoffeeCatsBooks I‘ve been gathering my stack for the throwback readathon and trying to resist reading any new graphic novels (so hard). 📚 6y
monalyisha @CoffeeCatsBooks I know what you mean! I‘m not even a graphic novel reader & it‘s hard to resist. Once they‘re in your possession, they look like such tempting little bite-size morsels! 6y

CoffeeCatsBooks That‘s it exactly! 6y
monalyisha @TricksyTails Me too! I went to a party last night & the host had a well-stocked graphics collection. Just knowing the names of some of these made me seem cooler than I really am. So thanks for that! 😅😉 6y

It‘s time for another #ThrowbackReadathon discussion question! Share this post & tag me, @monalyisha ,& my co-host, @Clwojick! Then, join us Jan 25-28 & reread all of your favorite childhood books!

As a kid, I got most of my books from a local discount store called Building 19. I could walk there & everything was super cheap. What this meant was that I ended up with a bunch of really bizarre titles no one else cared about.😅

(Cont‘d in comments)

monalyisha 1/1: It‘s funny to think that I wasn‘t a library kid, since libraries are such a big part of my life now. But my mom never took me, & honestly, I thought that all library books were gross & covered in boogers. 😅 Now, I‘ve been working in libraries - in Youth Services - for 10 years, & I often scrape those boogers off the books myself. 😂 (I totally wasn‘t wrong). But then, I read the books. No hesitation. Who says people can‘t change? 😜 6y

We forgot to post a Discussion Question for the #ThrowbackReadathon yesterday. 🙈 Oops! At least we‘re still in time for Flashback Friday?

As a kid, my favorite reading snack was definitely chocolate-chip teddy grahams. These days, I‘m all about the peanut butter-filled pretzel nuggets & wasabi peas.🔥 But I wouldn‘t look a gift bag of chocolate-chip teddies in the Mouth!😉🐻

Join us January 25th-28th & revisit all your favorite childhood books!

Rachel.Rencher I loved those little bread sticks that you'd dip in cheese. I don't know if they had a name, but they came in little packs. 😂 Now I love skinny pop. 🍿 6y
TheKidUpstairs Chips. Chips then, chips now. And there was just a limited time re-release of Ruffles Salt and Vinegar, so it's exactly the same these days! 6y
TheKidUpstairs @Rachel.Rencher yes! I loved those things! And the cracker ones with the little red spreader 6y
See All 15 Comments
CoffeeCatsBooks Cheese and crackers. Still my go to but now I add dried apricots or grapes 🍇 to go with them. 6y
Rachel.Rencher @TheKidUpstairs Yes! Those were so good! 6y
NagKachi Oreos with warm milk when I was a kid, chips with guacamole these days!! 😋 6y
Zelma Holy moly, I haven‘t thought about Teddy Grahams in eons. I loved the chocolate and honey. 💕 6y
monalyisha @Rachel.Rencher @TheKidUpstairs One time, in 1st grade, I traded one of those cheese snacks to a cute boy. In exchange, he had to agree to be my fiancé. ?? 6y
Rachel.Rencher @monalyisha That's awesome 😂😂😂 6y
TheKidUpstairs @monalyisha I'm totally down for engagement cheese! 6y
Clwojick 😂😂engagement cheese. 6y
monalyisha @Rachel.Rencher @TheKidUpstairs @Clwojick I love love, and I love cheese. 💕🧀💍 6y
monalyisha @NagKachi I love Oreos... but I can‘t pretend like the idea of warm milk doesn‘t deeply sadden me. 😅 I like it *right* outta the fridge. No counter time. I like my milk like I like my heart (ice cold).😉🥛 (edited) 6y
monalyisha @Zelma Right?! Annie‘s (the Mac & Cheese company) makes bunny grahams now & they‘re just perfect.👌🏻🐇 (edited) 6y
monalyisha @CoffeeCatsBooks I just had dried apricots tonight! And cheese-stuffed dates. 🤤 6y

Just a friendly reminder that myself and @monalyisha are hosting the #ThrowbackReadathon on Jan 25-28! If you're interested in joining us, gather a stack of books you loved as a child, and that you're interested in rereading. We will be sharing our reviews with our fellow Littens, and share how we feel about them now as an adult. Choose any books that remind you of your childhood. Whether that be picture books, comics, or chapter books. 👇🏻👇🏻

Clwojick As for myself, I will be choosing a selection of picture books and chapter books. Every Thursday until the event start date we will also be posting a discussion question. We are definitely welcoming everyone to post #throwback photos of their childhood. It's going to be a memorable blast. 😆 (edited) 6y

Aloisi_tribe I 💙 this! I listen to a podcast called Overdue where two guys discuss a new book each show. Some of my favorites are episodes where they read a book from their childhoods and discuss how much they liked or didn't like it as a kid and how it holds up now. Their Choose Your Own Adventure episodes are especially hilarious. 6y
monalyisha @Aloisi_tribe That sounds like a great podcast! 6y
Zelma @Aloisi_tribe thank you for the recommendation! I am definitely checking out the podcast. 👍 if you‘re looking for a new one, Literary Disco runs the gamut of genres, but their episodes on kid/ lit are really funny (choose your own adventure, Nancy Drew, Flowers in the Attic). The Hardy Boys episode is my favorite. 6y
Aloisi_tribe @Zelma thanks for the recommendation! That's one I haven't heard of before. I'll check it out. 😊 6y
Clwojick @Zelma FLOWERS IN THE ATTIC! I almost put that on my list. 😆 6y

Clwojick @lauren.lerner check out this post. More details are coming closer to the weekend we're hosting the readathon. 6y

Most people remember Fun With Dick and Jane, but I went to Catholic School and that was much too secular. ? So we read Fun With John and Jean. As you can see from the title page, it was a revision of the original by a priest. Our reading groups were named after the characters. Of course the best readers were in John's group (boys were always "better" than girls). #readinschool #photoadaynov16

cariashley 🙄 7y
MCYmermaid Wow. 😳 This was a thing?! 7y
Theresa You got to read fiction in Catholics school?? We just got to read The Baltimore Catechism. Although, to be fair, that was just in Religion class. I had a teacher for other classes who read us The Amityville Horror. And they wonder how kids get messed up. 😂😂 7y
See All 13 Comments
Theresa Typo... I meant Catholic not Catholics. 7y
Suzze @MCYmermaid I only realized about 10 years ago that I hadn't read the same books everyone else had. I was remembering being in John's group and wondered why it was called that. So I researched and found out we Catholics had our own version 7y
CocoReads The things you learn. 7y
kspenmoll We read SRA color coded leveled reading labs ! No books that I remember in my Catholic school. 7y
Sparkpuppypup I had Fun With John and Jean, too!!! Oh the memories..... 7y
LauraBeth This made me 😂😂 7y
Suzze @Sparkpuppypup I think you are the first person to remember these. Even my classmates say "They weren't Dick and Jane?" Nope. 7y
Sparkpuppypup Yes! I learned to read on those books at my grandmother's house, and I'm pretty sure they had belonged to my mom and my aunt! I went to Nativity of the BVM school and my teachers were mostly nuns! One thing I remember so clearly: We were organized into reading groups in Kindergarten, and 2 girls both named Debbie, and me, formed our own group. We were the 3 who could already read. We got to pick a name and we called ourselves The Bluebirds. 😂😂😂 7y
Suzze @Sparkpuppypup See? Reading was important to us even then! 7y
Sparkpuppypup Yes! I became a reader very young, and never looked back! ❤️📚 7y
