New Spring
New Spring: The Novel | Robert Jordan
From America's premier fantasy writer---#1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Crossroads of Twilight---comes an expanded version of his novella "New Spring," first published in the Legends collection. For three days battle has raged in the snow around the great city of Tar Valon. In the city, a Foretelling of the future is uttered. On the slopes of Dragonmount, the immense mountain that looms over the city, is born an infant prophesied to change the world. That child must be found before the forces of the Shadow have an opportunity to kill him. Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together. But those paths are filled with complications and dangers, for Moiraine, of the Royal House of Cairhien, whose king has just died, and Lan, considered the uncrowned king of a nation long dead, find their lives threatened by the plots of those seeking power. "New Spring" related some of these events, in compressed form; New Spring: The Novel tells the whole story.

The prequel was a good break in the main story line. This one is definitely a beginning. A beginning of Moiraine's quest to find the Dragon and a turning point in Lan's journey. I really enjoyed the pacing and seeing some of the characters in their younger years.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow.

This was a reread. I enjoyed revisiting this world. I‘d forgotten how well written and detailed these books are. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I've been meaning to start this series for a while, and a friend recommended starting it because it's becoming a series now. This first book didn't do it for me. I didn't like the characters, or the portrayal of women as petty and flighty, and the plot was stale. I'll give the next book a try, though.
I couldn't help imagining a version where the legendary boy born on the mountain wasn't a baby born, but a trans boy becoming himself.

Kenyazero (I realized part way through that this seemed like a prequel and that might be why I didn't like it. My friend may have mislead me on where to start) 2y
Nutmegnc Yes, this isn‘t the first one he wrote. Must have added that later? I don‘t remember this one at all and I LOVED the series. I really like your trans boy idea. That would make an interesting element! 2y
Kenyazero @Nutmegnc This one seems like it might be worthwhile if you love the rest of the series. I had a strong sense of filling in background details and introducing backstoties of characters everyone already loves. 2y
PuddleJumper I could never get into this series, I tried several times as my friends really love it. I found the writing difficult to get on with. I might try the tv series 2y
Kenyazero @PuddleJumper I can see why you struggled with the writing. It's a bit dry and hard to access. Reminds me a lot of reading LoTR. 2y

Kind of a snore, and further confirmation of my belief that most prequels subtract from a story more than they add. Sometimes a little mystery about a character's origins is a good thing. Recommended for Wheel of Time superfans only, and then only after you've read the entire original series.

Graywacke Completely agree 🙂 2y

You know when you don‘t ask for anymore of a backstory, but sometimes people will just tell you anyway?

That‘s what reading this was like.

Wheel of Time is hands down my favorite series in existence. I could geek out about it all day. I still didn‘t see the point of this. Why the high rating then? It‘s WoT, how can I NOT? 😅 Truthfully though, it was a fun enough read. I enjoyed seeing Lan and Moiraine‘s plutonic “meet cute” along with ⬇️

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm some of the other characters like Siuan and even *shudder* Cadsuane. Could have also done without the sexually abusive customs of Lan‘s culture. 😒😤🤬

I‘d say unless you‘re a HUGE fan and really just want an excuse to visit the world again, you can skip this one. If you do decide to read it, absolutely read it AFTER the main series.

Oh...oh my sweet, precious, naive little girls...🥺

This book has scared me for some time. The WoT series is my all-time fav and I‘ve been afraid that if I read this “prequel” it would lead me into wanting to reread the entire series all over again. 😅 I was right. This is why I‘ve strategically planned to read a completely different book afterwards to get a bingo.😂🤣

So far, I‘d say this is a prequel better understood AFTER reading the series.

The_Penniless_Author I just started WoT - 70 pages through The Eye of the World so far, so only another 32,000 pages or so to go 😄 3y

While I did enjoy this, I think it was much stronger as a novella. The expanded edition gives Jordan an opportunity to delve into Moiraine and Siuan's final days as Accepted, which is great if you're reading to spend time with the characters but less great if you want the two halves of the book to feel like a proper story. You can see the seams, and the ending feels decidedly short fiction. It doesn't carry the weight of the 400 pages before it.

xicanti ALSO, I'm sad this is a book largely about two women friends who sometimes have sex but everything's still subtext except for the bit where the other Aes Sedai are all, "Yeah, they're pillow-friends," which basically depends on the reader remembering that "pillow-friends" is WoT for "ladies who sleep with each other." It SORT OF fits since we're mostly in Moiraine's head and she's shy about sex, but it's still frustrating. 5y

So, finishing KINGDOM OF ASH made me want to reread the Wheel of Time, but I ain't in a position to commit to that many non-TBR chunksters right now. Then I remembered I've had the extended edition of NEW SPRING hanging around, unread, for *mumble* years. Perfect! It'll give me my WoT fix without a huge time commitment, and I'll finally get it off La TBR.

( I did read the original novella, but that was so long ago I barely remember it.)

inmegslibrary Love it! Currently rereading WoT and on book 8 (sorry TBR) 5y

xicanti @inmegslibrary I'm gonna try to squeeze in a probably slooooow reread once I finish a couple other epic fantasy series I've got on the go. Or once I've made a teensy bit of progress with those other series, if I can't wait. I'll see how I feel after NEW SPRING. 5y
