The Marrow Thieves | Cherie Dimaline
post image
Bailedbailed

A dystopian setting in which most people have lost the ability to dream, with catastrophic psychological results. Indigenous people, who can still dream, are hunted for their marrow to create a serum to treat others.
A great synopsis yet it‘s another YA novel I cannot relate to. Call me a snob, I don‘t know, but this really didn‘t work for me. Note to self: stop reading YA adventures for a while!!

TheLudicReader Too bad. I loved this one. 2y
BarbaraBB @TheLudicReader I know. You and some others whose opinion I value. That‘s why I picked it up in the first place but it just didn‘t work for me. 2y
TheLudicReader @BarbaraBB well, that‘s what‘s amazing about books, right. Like I can‘t understand all the Colleen Hoover love. At all. Lol. 2y
BarbaraBB @TheLudicReader We agree on that 😉 2y
BarbaraBB @LeahBergen @squirrelbrain @Cinfhen I knew you‘d understand me 🤍 2y
Megabooks Girl, just say NO to YA! 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I should!!! 2y
Cortg Next! Nothing wrong with moving on! 2y
bthegood A book snob would not have picked it up to begin with - at least you try different genres - and yes, I agree with others - just say no 😂 2y

My #bookmail is on 🔥 today. Kensington Press sent a finished copy of this recent true crime release.

I'm a total weirdo, I think. I love true crime & non-fiction but have decided I do not like memoirs or autobiographies. I don't mind essays but I don't like short stories.

I think I might be a #booksnob. 🤣😂

Kappadeemom Your kitty looks like mine! (Without the shaved legs!) 2y
FelinesAndFelonies @Kappadeemom aww! 🥰 Mine was in the hospital for a couple of days. She's 16 and has hypertension & hyperthyroidism. We didn't know until she had a stroke. So she's still working to grow her hair back. 😂 2y
Kappadeemom @FelinesAndFelonies awww bless her heart!🥰 My kitty is 11 and a handsome boy 2y

EKonrad Have you watched The Thing About Pam? It covers this case - kinda cheesy but I enjoyed it. 2y
Leftcoastzen Awww! Hope she feels better! 2y
FelinesAndFelonies @Leftcoastzen thank you! She's doing much better now! We were really worried but she's healing magnificently! ❤️‍🩹 2y

Four Winds | Kristin Hannah

Geez, this book is GRIM!!!! I was having #FoMo but now I know Kristen Hannah isn‘t the author for me.
I don‘t dislike this book as much as The Great Alone but I feel like the author is intentionally manipulating me.
I get the Dust Bowl was a terrible tragic time in US History and I actually appreciate the insight and descriptions Hannah provides but there‘s zero redemption. And I still have another 4 hours.

Caroline2 Yeah I‘m not keen on Kristin Hannah either. Bit too melodramatic. 3y
Cinfhen Yessss, that‘s exactly it @Caroline2 3y
BookLineNSinker Thank you for saying that... I've been wanting to say it myself! @Caroline2 I just didn't love it as much as everyone the did, just wasn't for me. 3y

Cinfhen I often find it‘s hard to admit to not liking a book that everyone else seems to love @BudgetingBookwormBabe I also feel like it will seem I‘m judging others taste, when it simply isn‘t true. I can appreciate how others might LOVE this book & author. 3y
BkClubCare I swear I am allergic to KH‘s writing. I won‘t read her anymore. The Nightingale sealed that for me (and I see that gave it 3 stars 🤣 I must‘ve been feeling generous.) 3y
Crazeedi @Cinfhen I liked her early books, and they've gotten not as good for me too, and yes grim is the word. 3y
Cinfhen I actually liked The Nightingale but again, I felt manipulated but I could not stand TGA @BkClubCare @Crazeedi I‘m happy this one is a #BorrowNotBuy 3y
PatriciaU I feel the same way about this author. Not for me… 3y
Cinfhen Woohoo 🙌🏻 I love when others validate my feelings xx Thanks @PatriciaU 3y
janeycanuck I hated The Great Alone and have been hesitant to pick anything else up by Hannah (though I have the Nightingale somewhere…) but have also been enticed by the buzz on this one. I think you‘ve confirmed for me that I should steer clear. 3y
BarbaraBB I just read my first book by her and thought it way too chick-lit #booksnob 3y
BookBosomed1 Im listening to this book; I agree it is grim. I‘d appreciate some levity here & there. The book seems like a good example for an overuse of pathos. 3y
Cinfhen Oh my!!! I‘m in such GREAT company/ thanks for letting me know I‘m not alone in the #UnPopularOpinion corner @BookBosomed1 @BarbaraBB @janeycanuck 3y
Lcsmcat @Crazeedi I agree that she‘s gotten much more emotionally manipulative in her later books. I hate when authors do that. 3y
LeahBergen I‘ve always sensed she‘s not for me, either! 😬 3y
Megabooks I‘m not a fan of hers. 🤷🏻‍♀️ good luck finishing! 3y
LeahBergen @janeycanuck Right? 😆 3y
Centique I‘ve come to that conclusion too after reading The Nightingale! Good writing but one was enough for me. A bit too long and bleak without something really sharp or insightful to make it worthwhile. 3y
Cinfhen EXACTLY @Centique it‘s like how much can we torture the reader with??? 3y

Ok, so this book is DEFINITELY YA and I‘m DEFINITELY no longer a YA....however, that didn‘t stop me from really enjoying this story. Parts were eye-rolling but overall #PhillyRules and this story was 🔥🔥🔥🔥This review was written with a sprinkle of cinnamon and less salt then usual xx

Challenge Prompts: #Booked2020 #YAWrittenByAPoC

NeedsMoreBooks @Cinfhen I think so. Have only read a few pages but I am enjoying it 😊 5y
Suet624 Her first book was soooo good that I was just a touch let down by this one. But I agree that it was a good one. 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Ha, cute review! 5y
Geenie I‘ve been loving YA too. Reading it not knowing what it was! 5y
Librarybelle I may have to use this one for the #YANovelByAPoC prompt too! 5y
alisiakae Acevedo has become a favorite YA author for me! Have you read Poet X? It‘s also great on audio. 5y
Megabooks This is such a fantastic book. I wish YA were more like this because then I‘d read it more. There‘s too much immature romance for me in most, but this hit the right note, or flavor! 😉😊 5y
Cinfhen No @4thhouseontheleft but I will check it out!!! Go for it @Librarybelle it was a quick listen and I imagine a short read 5y
Cinfhen I‘m generally a #BookSnob about YA which is totally unfair @Geenie as I‘m not the intended audience so I have no place judging but this book was really charming. It‘s my 3 YA since January and I‘ve liked all 3!!! 5y
Cinfhen @Megabooks I like what you did there!!!! 🤣 5y
Cinfhen Ok #BookTwin #SoulSister I‘m gonna check out Poet X next time I‘m craving something less heavy then my current NF / Holocaust reads @Suet624 5y
Suet624 I loved the format of the physical copy of poet x. I read it and then listened to it. Both were excellent but If possible I‘d encourage you to read it first. 5y

Last month when I did the Book Snob Book Tag on BookTube, I started thinking about other things that I am definitely very particular about when it comes to books. As it turns out, I am a bigger book snob than I initially realized! Check out my latest video video and let me know if any of these things bother you, too! https://youtu.be/wMp_dYyTtTQ #booktube #youtube #bookvlog #booksnob #dustjackets #moviecovets #massmarketpaperbacks #librarybooks

EadieB @Butterflyamore Sorry to see that Elliot passed away! He was so cute! In regards to DustJackets, I love them too. I bought a book that didn't have a jacket and made my own by taking a picture of the cover from the Amazon app and printed it out on paper and taped the papers together. I'm not at home or I would show you the cover that I made. I take the jacket off when I read the book but I would never throw it away. I put it back on after reading. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore I also like to remove the plastic covers from library books I own. I hate when they put the barcode on the back of the cover and cover up some of the wording from other's reviews or the description of the book. I hate to get a book where people have bent the edges of pages to mark their spot. I also am a book repairer. I'm forever putting tapes on the backside of older books whose jacket is ripping. Tape bindings that are apart too (edited) 5y

EadieB @Butterflyamore I like reading hardcover but sometimes find the trade of mass market a lot easier to travel with. I don't like descriptive sex or bad language in books. I love beautiful poetic writing too where I will read every word. But other styles don't bother me either. Never heard of putting bar codes on the front. Sales stickers on the front are annoying too. I always peel them off. I don't keep books after I read them so I'm not too fussy. 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB Thank you. It‘s been very difficult emotionally. We did not expect this to happen. Creating a cover for one without a dust jacket is a really good idea! I might have to do that for the one I mentioned. 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB Yes, I don‘t like those sale stickers either. I‘m usually okay with profanity, as long as it isn‘t ridiculously out of control, but I‘m not a fan of descriptive sex scenes either. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore Making the cover was a lot of fun. I'll have to find the book or I may have sent it on to one of my book swapping sites and I probably explained the cover to the person I sent it too. But I may still have it. 5y
EadieB @Butterflyamore The profanity that I dislike is when they use the F word throughout constantly when it is not necessary. That really bugs me. I think I mentioned the book YOU by Carolyn Kepnes. Found that really bad for descriptive sex and language. 5y
abookishbutterfly @EadieB Yeah, I thought I had wanted to read that but not now, based on what you‘ve shared. I do feel using the F word repeatedly really takes away from the value of the story. The sex stuff - I don‘t know - it‘s just so awkward to read for me. I really am not interested in the sex lives of other people. 5y

EadieB 1. I like to read the book before watching the movie. If it‘s a long book and I just want to know the story then I would watch the movie and may or may not read the book. 5y
EadieB 2. I would prefer physical books. 5y

I hate that it is the movie cover (#booksnob) but I love this book! While much of the narrative revolves around Antonina Zabinski, wife of the director of the Warsaw zoo, it is much more the story of Poland before, during, &after WWII. The Zabinskis risked everything to help Jews escape the Nazis but you also learn what life was like in war-time Warsaw. As the gr. gr. granddaughter of a Polish immigrant, I loved learning about where I come from.
