panI‘m confused as to what I just read. The opening chapter was magnificent. premise was nice; oldest daughter of Romeo/Juliet tries to navigate. Then she falls in love at first sight. The whole murder mystery was ok, just wasn‘t enough to take up the plot. Which had like 2-3 things going at once. Was disjointed. Rosie felt like a coin flip on how she feels about being forced to marry. The whole romance here was all over the place.

bailedThis was disappointing. I was hoping for another fun murder mystery set in a continuation of a well-read world, like Mr Darcy & Miss Tilney. Unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. I guess I didn't like the writing style. Or the characters. Rosie starts off supposedly as a mature older girl who knows she's not interested in love but then immediately falls in love with a random man (like she'd been teasing her parents about) ⤵️
I‘ve heard great things about this book. Two folks in my bookclub rated it 5⭐️. Thank you @BookwormAHN ! I loved the festive unicorn paper, and I look forward to enjoying some PB Santa chocolate and reading this Romeo and Juliet reimagining. Great swap package!

pickOkay, I LOVED this book. I initially bought it because it‘s an interesting concept. Romeo and Juliet aren‘t really dead?!?! Whaaa?!? It had all the elements I love in a story. Sarcasm, badass female protagonist, mystery, and a teeny tiny bit of gore. I found myself reading it slowly because I never wanted it to end. I can‘t wait for the follow up novel (it won‘t come out til June 😭). It was a fun read!
Apparently the #bookspin gods want me to read some Shakespeare adaptations this month. I'm down

pick“The quick anger of these men was not useful.” I do love a retelling and this one - or rather, an “untelling” - is a good one. For what happens before Romeo meets Juliet? What passes between Romeo and fair Rosaline? Here we find out in all its gory, unpleasant detail. I‘m coming at this as a lover of historical fiction, not a Shakespeare scholar. In that context, great as a retelling, equally good as standalone historical fiction.
