Our Violent Ends
Our Violent Ends | Chloe Gong
Shanghai is under siege in this captivating and searingly romantic sequel to These Violent Delights, which New York Times bestselling author Natasha Ngan calls deliciously dark. The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution. After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on the warpath. One wrong move, and her cousin will step in to usurp her place as the Scarlet Gangs heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less. Roma is still reeling from Marshalls death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him. Roma knows its his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and hes determined to set things righteven if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure. Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Romas cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: The Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day, and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they arent prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other.

So good. Juliet is amazing. Roma & Juliet are enemies again &Juliet needs to keep it that way, but then they are forced to work together to find a blackmailer. The gang fighting gives was to civil war. Alliances change. And there‘s still monsters to worry about. So much happens. Could be too much happens but the characters motivations are clear throughout. Really good.

January 1927

The New Year in Shanghai passed with such fanfare that a sense of party still permeated the city a week later. It was the way the people moved about—the extra bounce in their toes and the twinkle in their eye as they leaned over the seats of the Grand Theatre to whisper to their companion.

1st book of 2023!
I loved the first book, but this one didn't seem to live up to what I expected. Maybe because I listened instead of "reading" it like the first.

This was an exceptional ending to this series. It was so full of suspense and emotion. The ending took me completely by surprise. I definitely prefer this book to the first one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great sequel. It followed that fast pace, with action and interesting twists. But ending suggests that maybe this is not the end of that story. I don‘t how related is the companion book with this story. Let‘s see. 4⭐️

I don't know why it was so hard to be invested in characters but it was. Characters felt too two-dimensional.

I loved the setting, era and politics. Story was interesting but because I didn't care about characters this felt too long. Or maybe pacing was a bit off. This just didn't feel thrilling to read and it is a shame because there were nice twists and I would have loved to be thrilled.

Well that sure was an ending. I‘m still trying to process most of it tbh😂 I liked some parts of this better than the first book but overall this was mostly an okay read for me. With both books I found myself liking the side characters a lot more than the mains which I wasn‘t too surprised about considering I‘m not the hugest fan of Romeo and Juliet in the first place. Overall an okay read!

Perfect ending. I loved how Gong weaves in little hints and nods to Shakespeare; “a rose by any other name….” As well as true historical aspects from the time period. It‘s a perfect blend of history, truth and fantasy. I am excited to hear she is writing more books that take place in this world!

62% done & the narrative is running now! It is 🔥 🔥 🔥 Even though Roma & Juliet are older (19 or so) there are only stolen kisses which is fine because the tension and straight out violence of knives, fists, & guns provides excellent physicality. Their angry kisses in the heat of blood feud confusion are pretty compelling. Enemies to lovers, but sadly there are always two beds (& excitingly a million weapons) 🔪💣🏹 #starcrosslovers #Shanghai

Wow! I enjoyed the first book, but the second book of the duology was fantastic. Gong does a great job keeping true to the essence of Romeo and Juliet while creating a whole new feel. This duology has definitely become a favorite and I cannot wait to share with my students.

Despite having never been a fan of Romeo & Juliet, I very much liked the first book & I liked this sequel even better. Shakespeare, 1920‘s Shanghai, gangs & monsters came together. I firmly attached to the main characters & even more to some of the supporting ones. Can‘t wait to read the third! Thanks to @TheBookHippie for selecting Book 1 for #SundayBuddyRead as this isn‘t a title I‘d have picked & for doing a little “side hosting” for this one!

TheBookHippie It was so much fun! 3y

I‘m so glad this one wasn‘t ruined and was just as good as the first. The characters were still likable and some secondary ones had more book time and development. I really enjoyed it and am glad that I stuck with the first one despite the gory details at first. I also love the audio with the Chinese and Russian expressions. Can‘t wait for discussion. And books 3 & 4! #sundaybuddyread #ourviolentdelightsbuddyread 🤐🤫📚

What a chore to read; I skimmed the last few pages.

It has its moments but overall a really boring read. Might have liked it if it were just 1 book.

Ah, yes. One thing I forgot to include in my review of book 1: I wish Roma and Juliette were older.
Their past would have been more significant, I think.
And I know they're only 19 - children really - but my gods, they're so immature!
