Redwritinghood Hard to say. I don‘t think we‘ve seen enough of them to know for sure, but I think it was most likely thrill seeking. They lived in a small town that was in decline. 6y
MrsV I think they chose arson for the quick immediate release. The instant gratification. Plus the LOVED the whole “freak out” by the community by participating in the Facebook group. 6y
Onlaughterandliteracy I agree with @Redwritinghood (love the name 😂) that I don‘t feel like I know enough of them yet. I do think it has to do with the thrill though and possibly emotion. 6y

Onlaughterandliteracy @MrsV oh! Yes! Instant gratification! Good observation 👏🏻 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks A fire can be started quickly and left by the arsonist to do its destruction. I do not think it‘s the thrill or fascination with the fire or they would start fires in areas so that they could watch. I think this will be an emotional reaction. They were both unpopular and felt unwanted at times in their lives so I think this will be their motivation. 6y
TheBookHippie @MrsV 🙌🏻🔥instant part of it is a great way to put that ! 6y
bookloo It could be all three! Pyromania is gaining pleasure from the act of lighting fires, so I assume thrill seeking is a big factor. And you get to share it with your “soul mate”? That‘s next level. No wonder why they can‘t stop. 6y
AmyG @bookloo good point. Share with your "soulmate" in more than one way. The act and the secret only they share. False intimacy? (edited) 6y
bookloo @AmyG Yes! Exactly. 6y
TheBookHippie @bookloo Yup. All intoxicating and a huge rush! Good point! 6y
Suelizbeth I think it was a little bit of selfishness, too. This act was theirs together and no one else‘s. That would be thrilling. And no one knew that it was them. 6y
TheBookHippie @Suelizbeth That is a really good point. 6y
RebelReader I agree with @MrsV. They were looking for instant gratification and it had to be thrilling to participate in the Facebook banter. 6y
TheBookHippie @RebelReader That's all just brazen to me too!!! The fb talk! 6y
kspenmoll Everyone has great points- hard to join in so late. Sharing an intoxicating secret & getting a vicarious thrill? That seems like Tonya but maybe Charlie has bought in cause he loves her so much. 6y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I think Charlie was taken. I actually so far believe he is truly in love. 6y
kspenmoll @TheBookHippie I agree, think his big heart was in love. Not so with her I am thinking. 6y
TheBookHippie @kspenmoll I'm thinking she is incapable for some unknown reason ??? 6y

This is an interesting look at the resistance movement in Amsterdam during WWII. This is the book in round 2 in #LMPBC. Since I am not experienced in annotating my books, I‘m really not sure what to do now. Do I emphasize what #iheartYA has already marked? Or do I look for new things to mark? #qustionsquestions #historical fiction #reindeerreads

cathysaid In my book, I marked things I thought were interesting or confusing, different themes I noticed, things that made me laugh or cringe, areas that annoyed me, and passages I thought were beautifully written. I also asked a few questions of you all as I went. At the end of some chapters I summed up my thoughts. I'm just looking forward to all of your observations, whatever form they take! Hope this helps? 6y
cathysaid Also, it helped me to imagine we were all in the same room with yummy food and wine, talking about the books in our book club meeting! 6y
Jess7 I plan to read her #botm book #americanfire. If this one is good, I may have to add it to my #tbr too! Stacked! (edited) 6y

Mdargusch This is such a departure from American Fire. But so far I‘m really liking it. Jess7 6y
Mdargusch I like that idea about sitting in a room together @cathysaid 6y
ItsAngel @Mdargusch I don‘t think there are any rules to this. In my book I marked whatever really stood out...much the way @cathysaid explained in her response. Now that I have your book, @Mdargusch , I am underlining new things, emphasizing things that you‘ve already noticed and writing my own bits. I‘m just doing whatever I feel lead to do. 6y
emilyhaldi Good question! The comments above are helpful. 👍🏻 6y
cathysaid @ItsAngel yes! No rules! We're rebels! ✊ Let that Litsy flag fly!!! 🎏 (I might need to stop the coffee for the day....😳) 6y
Reviewsbylola I would just mark what stands out to you! 6y
ItsAngel Hahaha @cathysaid yes!! 🤪😝f 6y
Mdargusch I think I needed to hear “emphasizing things you‘ve already noticed” @ItsAngel because that was the part I wasn‘t sure about. 6y
Mdargusch I like “we‘re rebels” @cathysaid ! 6y
ItsAngel @Mdargusch I‘m glad it helped. I am just going with what feels right. I honestly don‘t think there is a right or wrong way to do this. It‘ll be interesting to see what is added to our selections. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I love this cover and it sounds really good!! Stacked!! 6y
Mdargusch I love the cover too @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and the book is good so far. 💙 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @Mdargusch good!! So glad the cover matches the quality!! 😉❤️ 6y

Last question for today's discussion and final question for the book! Jess posted question 5. I have really enjoyed discussing this book with everyone! You all made it so fun. Thank you so kuch for participating in our buddy read and look forward to more book discussions with you all!

Who is joining in The Heart's Invisible Furies or American Fire?

@Jess7 @Bookloo @MrsV @TheBookHippie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks #botmBuddyRead #LFEReadAlong

AmyG Izzy, being 15, took Mia literally. I had a sneaky halfway through that it was Izzy because all these things were happenning around her...but I felt she thought she was being ignored by everyone. I found it interesting that she would run away. Didn't see that coming. But then, that's what Mia did when she was young. I guess it gave Izzy an opportunity to start over. (edited) 6y
Valeka I don‘t think that Mia meant for Izzy to take her words literally but, being a teenager, she did. I wasn‘t surprised that Izzy set the fires. I like to think of Izzy as a phoenix rising from the ashes of her past life - stronger and more determined than ever. 6y
Valeka Thank you @MinDea and @Jess7 for being such awesome hosts! I will be participating in the #LitsyBuddyReads of Eleanor Oliphant and Everything I Never Told You read alongs. Looking forward to seeing you all there! (edited) 6y

Redwritinghood Mia is a radical, but I don‘t think she meant for Izzy to take this laterally and burn the house down. I‘m not surprised that Izzy did it either. She was very dramatic in all areas of her life. 6y
AmyG Yes @MinDea @Jess7 Thank you so much. You are wonderful hosts! I will definitely participate in THIF and I read American Fire so hope to join that, too. (edited) 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I don‘t think she meant it literally, but Izzy is a rebel so she took it that way. She has always been treated like the black sheep of the family so this allows her to get even with them in a way. 6y
TheBookHippie I don‘t think she meant literally. Izzy needed a way out I think. This forced her to go and start over and maybe after finding answers, live like Mia. On her own terms. Wonderful hosts!!! Can‘t wait for the next book discussion 6y
cathysaid I found the ending to be a bit disappointing and predictable. Izzy setting the fires makes the most sense, but I would have like to see more of a twist or surprise. Overall, however, I enjoyed the book. 6y
MinDea Thanks @TheBookHippie @AmyG and @Valeka. I had so much fun co-hosting #botmBuddyRead with @Jess7! @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks and @bookloo are up next to co-host #TheHeartsInvisibleFuries. Then @TheBookHippie and @MrsV co-host #AmericanFire then @Jess7 and I will be back to co-host whatever is next!!! 6y
MinDea I agree with everyone! Mia did not mean for her to literally burn anything down. Ahe just mean that from ashes things can regrow. That when she is old enough she will understand, be heard and have more than she does now. 6y
ChasingOm Echoing everyone, I don't think Mia meant it to be literal. I also agree with @cathysaid, that I found it a bit disappointing -- but maybe I've been reading too many thrillers and not everything needs a big twist at the end! Thanks @MinDea & @Jess7 for being hosts with the mosts; can't wait to see y'all commenting on @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks & @bookloo's feeds for THIF next #BOTMBuddyRead! 😘 (edited) 6y
Jess7 I agree with everyone‘s assessment of Mia‘s words and Izzy‘s actions. I liked the ending - to me it made the most logical sense in terms of Izzy being the fire starter. I was surprised about her deciding to run away. I wonder if she will find Mia and Pearl. 6y
Joanne1 Agree, it was not meant literally but teens are not great with metaphors. I felt like I knew izzy set the fires the whole time, it was the only thing that made sense and it was why izzy's perspective was mostly missing until the end. But I thought, in light of her taking Mia's words literally, she did it more to give everyone a chance to start again from scratch than to punish them. 6y
GatheringBooks hi all - i am going to be super late for the discussion here - but my book club here in singapore just discussed the book last night - i feel that izzy knew it was a metaphor; she is a gifted/extremely perceptive and smart girl after all; she just wanted to burn the house down because it may be symbolic of everything that she perceived was wrong about their lives. 6y

Here is our line up for the rest of this year. I hope you will join us! We selected #AmericanFire for #December. This #truecrime book is a “breathtaking feat of reportage”, redefining American tragedy of our time. It tells the story of a struggling mechanic who plead guilty to 67 counts of arson, and explores his surprising motives. The result evokes the soul of rural America—a land half gutted before the fires even began. 📚 #BOTMBuddyRead

Jess7 @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB - here is our #BOTMbuddyread lineup for the rest of this year if you‘re interesting in joining in. We selected American Fire for December and would love if you would join us! 6y
