This follow up book to Practical Magic focuses on another generation of the Owens Family of Boston. Susanna Owens escapes MA to pursue a career as a model in Paris, marries a psychiatrist and move to New York. She never speaks to her children about their ancestry or her family. It is 1950's and the Owens children are noted at the Starling School for their odd behavior.

This is a wonderful magical treat - I think everyone should try an Alice Hoffman novel.

This was a surprise for me, it was a very well written book with an interesting story.
Siblings must navigate growing up in the 1960s as cursed witches. As long as they don‘t have in love, they can live relatively normal lives, but as they try to avoid love, they complicate their lives.
3.5/5 beautifully written, but kind of sad.

Finally finished Book 2 in the Practical Magic series. Since I already read book 3 it‘s onto Book 4 and final in the series .. if you like witches .. you will love this series!!

I always enjoy books from Hoffman, but this one wasn‘t on the top of my list. Interesting narrative that weaves between character development, lessons of magic and the actual storyline. The book does a great job of giving the reader glimpses of history, love, family, and the inner wickedness we all must navigate. Using your powers to help or hurt in order to achieve what you want, very intriguing overall!

This was such an interesting exploration of how Franny and Jet came to be the Aunts we know in “Practical Magic.” Heartbreaking at every turn, yet still sweet and life-affirming. The inclusion of Dickenson‘s quote “unable are the loved to die, for love is immortality” feels especially poignant.

Love having any extra day off to sit in my library with some iced coffee and a book 😊 ☕️ 📖

Finally picked this book up and so happy that I did. I had been putting off reading my first Hoffman book, but I finally read something by her! I was hooked from the beginning and loved the creation of the mysterious ethos surrounding the Owen's family. I know that this is technically the second book published in the series, but I didn't mind reading it first given that it is a prequel to book 1. I am looking forward to the next book.

I was really into this at first, but unfortunately the dreamlike writing style really started to drag. I felt like I was being told what to think and how to feel—which is a sure way to keep me detached from the narrative. I also thought the characters‘ reactions to the curse were nonsensical.

Why has it taken me so long to read Alice Hoffman?! This is a delight so far. And I enjoyed encountering a kindred spirit in some past borrower who corrected a typo 😆

43 Books this year; my goal was 40. A busy and crazy year so I'm glad to have reached my goal even if it's less than past years.
Tagged my favorite of the year. I reread the whole series this year, and I just love it so much!

I‘m continuing my first trip through the Practical Magic series, and so far have loved every book. The Rules of Magic is a gorgeous book! Vincent was such an unexpectedly great character, but Franny and Jet… oh my heart. ❤️

I finished my chronological reread of this series last week with Practical Magic on Saturday. However the Rules of Magic remains my favorite of the series — I think because Franny and Jet‘s stories resonate the most with my own past experiences figuring out who I am and what I want.

#Screamathon Book 2! I know it isn‘t scary, but it‘s about witches so I‘m counting it. I‘m so glad I decided to reread this series in chronological order, but this reread made me itch for a Susannah in Paris spin-off novel. Where do I put in my formal request for that?

I didn‘t love this one as much as Magic Lessons, but it was a very sweet book nonetheless. I loved the time period and getting to experience the journey through life and love of Franny, Jet, and Vincent, as they try to circumvent the magic curse established by their ancestor, Maria Owens.

I loved this story about Frances, Jet, and Vincent growing up in N.Y.C. on the cusp of the 1960s and spending time in Massachusetts with an aunt whose presence would help to alter their lives and become who they were really meant to be. This book made me feel a bit melancholic and thoughtful, but in a good way knowing that life is short and how even small decisions can change lives. A really beautiful story that I can tell will linger for awhile.
