BarkingMadRead
Cranford | Elizabeth Gaskell

Ruthiella I love how the unnamed narrator just shoveled the peas in….Is this the vegetable on the Penguin hardbound classic edition! 😂 Also how wonderful that Miss Mattie allows Martha to “walk out” with a young man now. It‘s rather poignant. (edited) 2y
BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella she‘s not messing around! Yes! This is the veggie on my cover. So random! 🫛 2y

BarkingMadRead @Ruthiella I‘m glad she learned from her past! Poor Matty! 2y
Morr_Books I'm afraid what the fate may be of Martha's new young man based on every other man mentioned in this book so far. 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books right?!? It doesn‘t bode well 🤣 2y
peanutnine @Morr_Books 🤣 I was thinking the same thing! #noboysallowed...tolive 2y
Bookwormjillk @Morr_Books I think he should be safe because he‘s not a gentleman. #AnotherOneBitesTheDust 2y
BarkingMadRead @peanutnine 🤣🤣🤣 @Bookwormjillk good point!!! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I've started noting how many deaths there are in each chapter so we can get a final death count at the end 😂 #fourinfourchaptersseemslikeahighaverage 2y
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks I‘m starting to think this book should be in the gothic category AND who has company over and retires to the smoking parlour alone? I predict a bad end for any and all gentleman callers whether or not they are “gentleman” #sticktotheshadows 2y
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks @peanutnine all y‘all giving me a run for the money on my hashtag game 🤣🤣 #imsoproud (edited) 2y
eeclayton #CranfordDeadpool I'll go with Martha's boyfriend, too. He may not be a gentleman, but is supposed to be a good guy, so. 2y
BarkingMadRead @eeclayton I‘m cackling #deadpool 🤣🤣🤣 2y
dabbe @TheAromaofBooks At the rate we're going, there will be more deaths in this book than in a Shakespearean tragedy! 🤣 And it's like we just start getting to know a character, then BAM. You dead. I'm going to try not to care about anyone until they make it through the chapter. (edited) 2y
Clare-Dragonfly The peas!!! If anyone else wondered about Aminè and the ghoul, I found the story: https://www.sacred-texts.com/neu/lang1k1/tale31.htm 2y
Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks Thanks for keeping track! I was not expecting him to die. I will never get attached to a man again. Unlike Martha. Love how she had her “follower” ready and one of his points of recommendation is that he‘s 6‘1”! 2y
Vansa Finally catching up.I thought this was an incredibly beautifully written chapter-captures an entire sweep of changing social mores, a thwarted romance, class prejudices in one short chapter. Something entire books don't do as well. I teared up at the end-I wish Matty's changing attitudes didn't have to come with such a cost to her. And still women soldier on. 1y

#AnotherOneBitesTheDust

I didn't like this as much as the previous two books in the series but this was still an amazing read! I'm kind of getting over Sarah and Jeffrey a little bit. It's getting kind of old. Lena...well I'm starting to sympathize with her self destructive behaviour but she's still grating on my nerves. I need some development to go with the storyline!

Anyway...onto book 4!

A book on the “Pirate 🏴‍☠️ TBR” about a cursed girl, magically forced to live life as 100 dogs before turning back into a person, only then can she retrieve her treasure!

Mdargusch What an interesting storyline- pirates and teens and fantasy. 6y
emilyhaldi Wowza!!!😱 6y
Reviewsbylola That sounds horrible—to live as a dog. 😬 6y
CrowCAH @Mdargusch @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola I agree such an interesting storyline. 6y

Cinfhen Have u read it??? I‘ve been curious about this title!!?? 6y
Mdargusch I think there is more minutiae about Victorian life than details about the murder @Cinfhen so it depends on which part you would be interested in. 6y
Cinfhen Hmmm, that‘s good to know @Mdargusch not sure how interested I am in Victorian Life as opposed to reading about an epidemic ( which sounds more fascinating to me) 6y
emilyhaldi I haven‘t read it yet... someday!!! @Cinfhen (edited) 6y
Reviewsbylola I couldn‘t get into this one. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 6y

Kahiki Supper Club: A Polynesian Paradise in Columbus | David Meyers, Elise Meyers Walker, Jeff Chenault, Doug Motz
post image

If you‘re from Columbus, you‘ll remember the Kahiki Supper Club. It was a restaurant like no other. We always went for birthdays and would cook our own meatballs over mini fires and order the smoking drinks. It was torn down over 15 years ago to build a Walgreens and I‘m still not over it. 😭

#anotheronebitesthedust #anglophileapril

AlaMich It sounds like it was a lot of fun, like a tiki theme. 6y
ravenlee Kahiki was my homecoming dinner sophomore year of high school. Also, when I was about 10 and moving to Columbus, random girl in my dance class told me about this place she couldn‘t remember by name but it has fish on the walls and everybody goes there - years later we figured out it was Kahiki. 6y
cherinium It was such a landmark, it was terrible to see it razed. 6y

rretzler I loved Kahiki and still miss it too! There is a new tiki restaurant in Powell that I‘ve been meaning to try, but I‘m sure it will not be able to compare with Kahiki! 6y
Mdargusch I love that there are kahiki fans on Litsy!!! @ravenlee @cherinium @rretzler 6y
rretzler @Mdargusch @ravenlee @cherinium @Reviewsbylola It makes me wonder how many Littens are in the Columbus area. I live in Dublin, but have been in Columbus since 1981 - originally from Wintersville, OH, a small town in eastern OH near the Ohio River. 6y
ravenlee @rretzler I‘m not in Columbus anymore. I left Ohio 15 years ago and have been back just a handful of times since, but we lived in Gahanna from ‘91-mid ‘00s and my dad still has family scattered around town. I think there‘s been an Ohio Litten meet-up - @Chelleo did you set that up? 6y
Chelleo @ravenlee @rretzler Yes, I did and we have another #OhioLitsyMeetup scheduled for this coming Saturday at the #OhioanaBookFestival We‘re meeting in the Cafe of the Columbus Metropolitan Library at 9:30am. 6y
ravenlee Thanks, @Chelleo - that sounds like fun. Hope you all have a great time! 6y
cherinium @rretzler I am also not in Columbus anymore. I grew up in Franklin (near Dayton), went to college in Findlay (spending my summers in Columbus), then moved to Columbus. I stayed in Columbus until my husband took a job in St. Louis in 2012. I miss it tremendously. 6y

“Your pillow alone may be home to 40 million bed mites. (To them your head is just one large oily bon-bon). Indeed, if your pillow is six years old - which is apparently about the average age for a pillow - it has been estimated that one-tenth of its weight will be made up of sloughed skin, living mites, dead mites and mite dung.”

Reviewsbylola That is horrifying. 😱 6y
Reviewsbylola Also, two of my pillows are probably 20 years old. 😆 I‘ve never been able to find pillows like the ones @mdargusch had. They could be 100% bed mites and their dung and I still wouldn‘t let them go. 😆😆 (edited) 6y
Reagan Ewwwwww ☹️ 6y
Cinfhen Oh God! I don‘t think I wanted to know that 😳😳😳 6y

(Day 21 - #AnotherOneBitesTheDust)

*Just a few of the powerful and/or famous men who fell like dominoes with the advent of the #metoo movement. It seemed like every day, “another one bit the dust.”

Mdargusch Nice tie in! It did seem like there was one a day for a while. 6y
