Discworld 03 - Equal Rites | Terry Pratchett
post image

Esk spent days at a time with Granny Weatherwax, learning witch craft.

It seemed to consist mainly of things to remember.

Welcome to the OokBOokClub open discussion for #EqualRites! Discuss anything you would like and be sure to tag each other so your friends see your replies! Please be mindful of spoilers. We have readers (like me!) new to Sir Terry who haven‘t read all of his books. When referencing his other work, please keep this in mind. Most importantly, HAVE FUN! And thanks for letting me crash the party!

theresidentromantic I know I'm not part of this, but that man just looks so happy! Made me smile. 7y

DGRachel @theresidentromantic It‘s a great picture, isn‘t it? 😂😍 7y
saresmoore I loved this book so much! It‘s the one that got my mom hooked on the Discworld. 😊 7y
Chellebearss @DGRachel thanks for guest hosting! @saresmoore I also loved his one! I really loved Granny and hope she appears in more later. I think this was the best so far. 7y
khooliha I was kind of hoping that I would like this book better on this reread cause I've never really clicked with it, but it didn't happen for me. It struck me this time as weirdly paced after the halfway point and essentialist in a way that 1) isn't surprising and 2) isn't what I'm looking for. Sorry, Equal Rites. 7y
Moray_Reads @DGRachel @saresmoore @Chellebearss so interesting to see "early" Granny, almost but not quite the formidable figure she becomes in later books and strange to see her mostly on her own! This one is so much better than the first two, Sir Terry hitting his stride 7y
JennAndrew @Moray_Reads yes! This wasn‘t Granny as I know her. I love re-reading this series from the beginning and seeing both the regular characters and also Sir T‘s style evolving. 7y
Moray_Reads @JennAndrew there were a couple of moments towards the beginning where people done to hey in a way she would NEVER allow later. Not that they'd dare. But by the time we got to the magical duel with the Archchancellor she was more on form 7y
JennAndrew I enjoyed this very much. I‘ve read it at least once before, but a good while ago and it really tickled me. I think it‘s a lot more like the Discworld novels I know and completely love. There were bits that made me laugh out loud (on the bus, at one point 🤦🏻‍♀️😂) and bits that made me have to write notes in the margin. Particularly the bit where the tree/ wizard mansplains witchcraft to Granny! I feel TP must have done that on purpose? 7y
JennAndrew And there was another bit which made my heart ache- when Esk talks about never having a chance, when she realises she‘ll never be a wizard because they‘ll never let her in the door given she‘s a girl. That got me in the chest- the realisation that something outside your control- your gender/ skin colour/ sexual preference etc etc- will stop you doing what you are destined to do, that hit home. I felt disappointed in some tired fantasy themes in... 7y
JennAndrew The first two books, so I was so pleased to have TP in his forward thinking, questioning, brilliant mode in ER. I wasn‘t sure about the relationship with Simon & Earl though? What was going on there? Big brother, little sister dynamic? It didn‘t always seem so, but surely she was about 10? 7y
Moray_Reads @JennAndrew I love Granny's cloak with the red lining and the Zoons and their Liars 7y
JennAndrew @Moray_Reads yes, I loved the Zoons! I rolled my eyes at the multiple wives, but I considered that if my husband had other wives who would do all the chores and I could sit being the black-garbed, crone-like senior wife, I may actually be ok with that! 😂 And the concept of the Liars was excellent. They sounded like brilliant people! 7y
hgrimes New Discworld fan here! I looooved this one, and the brilliant social commentary that is still very relevant today. I was also endeared by Granny and Esk‘s relationship. 7y
Chellebearss @Moray_Reads Glad to hear that we will see Granny again! 7y
Moray_Reads @Chellebearss oh yes, there's plenty to come and she just gets more and more awesome 7y
hgrimes @Moray_Reads Yippee! She was my favorite character in this book. 7y
Craftylikefox Equal Rites is in competition for my favorite discworld. I enjoyed meeting Granny Weatherwax. I also love the Unseen University‘s head librarian. This was a really nice romp in discworld, and I feel like I got a better idea of what the wizards and witches are in this world. I thought the idea of borrowing was pretty cool. 7y
laurieluna I loved this book, despite being a discworld fan this is the first time I'd read this one! I loved the way it was wrapped up, the ants were perfect. 7y
dariazeoli I enjoyed this book so much more than the first two! Granny, for some reason, reminded me of Backman‘s 7y
dariazeoli I also wonder how much Pratchett influenced Rowling when it came to wizarding schools! 7y
Iblu I am always wandering what or better who inspires male writers when they portray female characters. Esk and Granny are strong intelligent determined women. They still have feminine “weaknesses” but they are not stereotypical 7y
Iblu But then again I guess painters portray beauty, writers portray interesting personalities. In conclusion: i love writers😬😜 (edited) 7y
Soubhiville @Craftylikefox I also like be the idea of borrowing! I could see getting too attached to being one kind of animal or another... it‘s a little like shape shifting, which I‘ve always thought would be an incredible power to have. 7y
Soubhiville @dariazeoli interesting question! It would be cool to find out if Rowling read much Pratchett! 7y
gossamerchild I'm going to add to the general consensus that Granny is amazing. And this isn't even her best role! @dariazeoli I adore the idea of Rowling reading Pratchett. I'm constantly surprised by the number of people in the States who haven't read or even heard of him. 7y
DGRachel @gossamerchild I‘m almost ashamed to admit I am one of those people who had not read his work before joining Litsy. I‘m sure I had heard the name, but knew nothing about his work. In high school and college, I rarely read anything that could be classified as fantasy. I was an unbearable book snob. 😔 7y
