The Boston Girl | Anita Diamant
post image

I just had to take a #shelfie for all the world to see 😎👍🏻! Okay, top right corner of the #schoolmarm desk. As usual, most of these I purchased for @BookBabe 😍. Any superbs, any meh's? Please, as always, share your thoughts.

jessicarenee I wanted to like After Alice so much...but I was very disappointed with it. 📖😕 8y
Cortg I love love loved the Nightingale and was disappointed in Boston Girl. I think my expectations were too high after The Red Tent. 8y
britt_brooke A Man Called Ove is SO good. 💙 It's probably one of my top books ever. I did not care for The Nightingale, but a lot of folks seem to like it so I may be in the minority there (I thought it was too Nicholas Sparks-y, if that makes sense). 8y
See All 39 Comments
LitHousewife The only book I've read is Night Film. I enjoyed it, but it was far from what I'd hoped it would be. 8y
marixa I enjoyed Smoke 8y
L_auren Boston Girl and Nightingale are both delightful. After Alice was a disaster. 8y
Cinfhen @cortg I agree completely regarding Boston Girl, really disappointing given how good Red Tent was @britt_brooke 💯% agree with your summation of The Nightingale & A Man Called Ove❣Still, The Nightingale made for good book club discussion🤓 8y
Readingrobin The Nightingale was a big favorite of my Bookclub. 8y
Sweettartlaura Ove is a delight, & McEwan is a master. It's been a while since I read Saturday, but there is nothing by him I haven't loved. 8y
katedensen Much love for both Night Film and Saturday! 8y
Reading_E Boston Girl was really good but I have not read Red Tent 8y
Nonaroo I liked Saturday. 8y
Hobbinol I'd be interested to know how the Chuck Close book is when you get to it (among others)... 8y
ApoptyGina69 I read The Boston Girl and enjoyed, but I LOVED her novel The Ref Tent. I very much liked Night Film and The Nightingale. For some reason, I'm not a huge fan of McEwan, although I've read a few including Saturday. I did like The Cement Garden though. The Rushdie and After Alice are in my TBR. 8y
TheWordJar Really want to read Night Film. I liked Saturday. Your shelfies are the best! 8y
eric.small The Salman Rushdie is superb. 8y
itsbrb I LOVED Nightingale. 8y
LauraBeth I'm curious about the Chuck Close - ❤️ him 8y
MrBook @jessicarenee @L_auren Yeah, Alice disappointed me too. Can't win them all. It's probably be best if he doesn't make another Alice attempt: salt in the wound. @Cortg @L_auren @Readingrobin @itsbrb Yay for Nightingale 😊👍🏻! I appreciated the rather unique perspective she presented. 8y
Titania The Nightengale was a meh for me. I tried, but I'm just not a Kristen Hannah fan. 8y
MrBook @britt_brooke That makes perfect sense to me about Nightingale 😊👍🏻. 8y
TNbooklover66 Night Film!!❤️ 8y
MrBook @Cortg @L_auren @Cinfhen @Reading_E @ApoptyGina69 I've heard this comparison many times about the two books. @britt_brooke @Cinfhen Yes, @BookBabe loved Ove! @LitHousewife @katedfisher @ApoptyGina69 Night Film gets a mixed-bag review by readers, I'm looking forward to it though. 8y
MrBook @Sweettartlaura Bingo on all the above 😊👍🏻. @Cinfhen I got Sara for @BookBabe as she wants all books art--she is an artist after all, lol. @Nonaroo Looking forward to that one 😊👍🏻. @Hobbinol I'll be sure to let you know 😊👍🏻, although @BookBabe gets first dibs, lol. @TheWordJar Thank you 😁👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻🙌🏻! @eric.small Then we are #KindredSpirits 😎👍🏻👌🏻. @LauraBeth I'll let you know after @BookBabe reads it, lol 😊👍🏻. 8y
MrBook @Titania I can understand that. At least you made the attempt and gave her a chance 😊👏🏻. @TNbooklover66 Lol, I'll let you know my thoughts when done 😊👍🏻. 8y
Tav I liked the Maguire but it wasn't my favorite of his books. It's more like a meh. 8y
HollyB3 @MrBook I enjoyed both The Nightingale and The Night Film. The Night Film was creepy but fascinating. 8y
Ashley31 I really enjoyed Nightfilm. Great creepy fall read! Also there's a free app you can download that unlocks some new content for the book. I think the info is in the front or very back of the book. Cool to have while you're reading. 8y
CharlotteK Owen Sheers has had amazing reviews in the UK. I think he is Welsh. Not read any of his Books though. McEwan is a banker, his books are all good, some are outstanding (Enduring Love is my fave). Went to one of his events in London this eve. He is completely charming and incredibly clever 😍 love Ian McEwan! 8y
JenlovesJT47 Nightingale = 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 8y
brendanmleonard I have started Night Film at least 4 times and always gotten distracted! 😂 I really like it, though! 8y
DeannaTess Really liked The Boston Girl -- big fan of Anita Diamant. 8y
MrBook @Tav Yeah, definite meh for me too 😕. @HollyB3 You have excellent #bibliotaste 😎👍🏻🙌🏻. #kindredspirits 😊👍🏻! @Ashley31 Awesome 😊👍🏻! I like the interactive reads. @CharlotteK We need to hang out 😁! If @BookBabe and I make it to the UK, you think we can schedule a get-together? Lol 😎👍🏻. @JenlovesJT47 😁👍🏻👏🏻🙌🏻👌🏻!!! @brendanmleonard 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! That happens to me as well 😁. @DeannaTess 😁👍🏻!!!! 8y
CharlotteK @MrBook @BookBabe absolutely! Any time you are in the UK let me know, would love a get together 😃👍you've definitely got to check out the flagship Waterstone's store on Piccadilly if you've ever in London! 📚 8y
MrBook @CharlotteK Ooooh, Waterstone's! Loved loved loved that place! (And Piccadilly to boot.) 8y
CharlotteK There's a great bookstore called Foyles as well on Charing Cross Road in London. Hatchards is great too. Also The London Review Bookshop and Heywood Hill booksellers. In my nearest town we have 2 Waterstones stores! There is a great 2nd hand bookshop about 40 mins away too - Treasure Chest Books in Felixstowe. Quite a lot of good places in East Anglia, even though it is very rural. Would love to visit Barnes & Noble one day! Never been to the USA! 8y
MrBook @CharlotteK It all sounds overwhelming 😂👏🏻😁👍🏻! Can't wait! Please let me and @BookBabe know if you'll be in the NYC area anytime in the future. If we can work it out, we'd love to show you around a bit 😊. 8y

Orphan Train: A Novel | Christina Baker Kline
post image

Time to take a #shelfie. Left side of the bottom shelf of the #schoolmarm desk. Most, again, are @BookBabe 's 😊. Any superbs and meh's in this mix?

BillKathyWms I love "The Orphan Train" & use it with some of my high school students! ? 8y
britt_brooke Orphan Train 👍🏻, The Martian 👍🏻, Luckiest Girl Alive 👎🏻 8y
Coleen I sort of dragged my feet on starting The Martian, but it ended up being one of my most faves of last year. 8y
See All 30 Comments
Suzze I may be the only one, but Orphan Train was just o.k. For me. I did really enjoy At the Water's Edge. 8y
Eridau The Martian and The Water's Edge both get 👍🏻👍🏻 from me. 8y
LauraBeth Realistically, I should read How To Lower My Taxes"... 8y
intothehallofbooks From this shelf: Luckiest Girl Alive and Water's Edge are favorites of mine! 🎉 8y
gibblr I liked Luckiest Girl Alive 8y
moranadatter Of this bunch, I've only read The Martian, but I loved it. Until I read it, I didn't realize how much I needed some optimistic SF. 8y
mhippo @Suzze I'm with you on Orphan Train being 'meh'... Didn't care much for it, despite the good reviews. 8y
AndreaReads I LOVED The Martian! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Jitterbug Perfume 👍👍👍 8y
Zelma Agree on The Martina. A bit heavy on the science but it was supposed to be, and was funny. However. I ❤️ The Dog Master! Fantastic, essentially a soap opera involving early hominids and wolves. So, so good. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Humans of New York was fascinating, and The Martian is a Must Read! 👍👍 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @kmdartist Yes! I agree totally with that! 8y
Suzze @mhippo Good to know. I felt kinda alone on that. 8y
Kirstin Jitterbug Perfume 💜 8y
Alisnazzy All the yes to Jitterbug perfume. 8y
Hooked_on_books I stumbled across The Martian shortly after it was published, LOVED it, and foisted it upon multiple people. 8y
Cortg I just read Luckiest Girl Alive, good but not as good as I was hoping, the movie is in the works. 8y
MrBook @britt_brooke 😎🙌🏻 #kindredspirits! @Coleen See, and what do we learn from this 😉😆👍🏻? @Suzze If you are the only one, still stand proud 😎👏🏻👍🏻. @Eridau Loved Martian, haven't read Edge yet 😊👍🏻. @LauraBeth 😂😂😂👍🏻👏🏻🙌🏻! @intothehallofbooks Glad you approve of my collection 😁👍🏻👌🏻! @gibblr Half of my one bookclub loved it and the other didn't, it seems to be one of those books without a happy medium, lol 😊👍🏻. 8y
MrBook @kmdartist 😁👍🏻🙌🏻! I was so happy to *finally* read about a main character who could keep his head and not wallow in a crisis! I haven't found that since Gulliver and Robinson Crusoe 😊. @mhippo I'll let you and @Suzze know what I think after I read it 😊👍🏻. @AndreaReads Yes 😁🙌🏻!!! @BookswithTea I'm looking forward to it 😁😎👍🏻. @Zelma Yay with Martian! Interesting regarding Dog Master. I'll let you know my thoughts when done 😊👍🏻. 8y
MrBook @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Listened to Humans speak at BookCon last year, phenomenal guy 😁👍🏻! @Kirstin I found myself really like Jitterbug 😊👍🏻🙌🏻! @Hooked_on_books I made it a book club selection in 2 of my book clubs 😁👍🏻👌🏻! @Cortg It'll be an interesting movie for sure 😊👍🏻! 8y
AndreaReads @MrBook I'm super impressed by those tagging skills! Thanks for all the read suggestions! 8y
MrBook @AndreaReads Thank you ☺️👍🏻!!! Whatever I can do to add a few more layers to everyone's TBR piles 😂👏🏻👍🏻. 8y
Megabooks The Martian!! 8y
DeannaTess Loved The Water's Edge👍🏻 8y
MrBook @Ebooksandcooks 😁👏🏻👍🏻! @DeannaTess Hopefully @BookBabe gets to it soon 😊👍🏻. 8y

So here's another #shelfie of mine. (Am I being too narcissistic here? 😆) This is the right side of the bottom shelf of @BookBabe 's and my #schoolmarm desk. You're starting to get the full picture of it all now as this is the 3rd pic of it 😊. #Coale was playing with coins again 😼. Any titles stick out to you as superb or meh?

OffTheBeatenShelf.com Looks very similar to my shelf! 👍🏼 8y
itsbrb 1Q84! 👏🏽🙌🏽 I don't think I'll ever stop thinking about that one! 8y
cariashley I just finished it recently, loved 8y

GinaAnderson The Dinner was very good but I wasn't blown away by Ready Player One. 8y
Hobbinol The Dinner is great. Plus, I suspect it will make for some great dinnerscapes to post here. 8y
Lidia The Paris wife was pretty good 8y
Sarahr875 1q84 and The Dinner are both books I've been wanting to read. I love your shelfies ! 8y
Dogearedcopy I read 'The Paris Wife' last summer in anticipation of reading 'Circling the Sun.' TPW was definitely the stronger of the two; and gave me an insight and appreciation regarding Hemingway. If/when you read this one, I would love to discuss! 8y
LauraBeth These are all good 😀 8y
Dogearedcopy I listened to 'Ready Player One' (narrated by Wil Wheaton) and it was a *lot* of fun! I didn't feel that you needed to be familiar with the '80s references, though the story probably resonates more with those that remember the time. Also, WW as the narrator is just too perfect! 😉 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 Heard good things about The Dinner and also Mary Kubica's books... 8y
johnnie_cakes Juliet was my favorite book of 2010. 8y
LeahBergen I really liked 8y
KafkaKitten 1Q84! Then again, I'm partial to pretty much anything by Murakami. 8y
JenlovesJT47 Didn't like Pretty Baby 😌 8y
JenlovesJT47 Just noticed Dollface. Absolutely loooooooved that book! Perhaps because I feel I should have lived back in the 1920s 😋 8y
LauraBrook Ready Player One was AWESOME!!! 8y
BeckyRoy I liked The Dinner. I loved Ready Player One! 8y
ellareads I liked The Good Girl and The Dinner but I loved Ready Player One. The Paris Wife is in my TBR pile. 8y
aeeklund Ready Player One was so much fun! 8y
katedensen The Dinner has been on my TBR list for years. 8y
Mdargusch I really liked the dinner. A good, suspenseful read. 8y
TNbooklover66 I loved The Enchanted Life of Adam Hope and 1Q84! 8y
Alisnazzy I have 1Q84 waiting for me when I get back to FL. Can't wait to read it. 8y
Alisnazzy the good girl was disappointing and quite problematic 😕 8y
Alisnazzy @KafkaKitten same!! Murakami all day, every day 8y
Lani_bug Juliet was a good read! 8y
KafkaKitten @Ambrosnazzy Yes!!! It's always good to find another Murakami fan 😄 8y
Zelma Ready Player One won't change your life but is a really enjoyable ride. And not narcissistic; we ❤️ shelfies here on Litsy. It's like reader porn. 😂 8y
Abailliekaras Murakami all the way! 😍 8y
megt Ready Player One was a lot of fun! And I read and enjoyed Juliet a few years ago. 8y
Ashley31 Love, love, love The Paris Wife! 8y
EnidBiteEm I've been meaning to read The Paris Wife and IQ84... 8y
Dragon I liked IQ84 but be prepared for weird 8y
Cortg The Paris Wife was good! 8y
Moonpa The Paris Wife was good but The Dinner generated one of my book club's best discussions. 8y
becausetrains Coale needs to lay off the slot machines! 😹 I grew up with nerds, so Ready Player One resonated with me. 8y
RealLifeReading The only one I've read is Ready Player One and that was such fun 8y
Procrastireader I found Ready Player One a lot like The Hunger Games--a lot of really interesting ideas that the writing couldn't quite live up to. 8y
MrBook @aeeklund @Zelma @megt @RealLifeReading @Procrastireader @BeckyRoy @LauraBrook @Dogearedcopy @ellareads I enjoyed RP1! It was a lot of fun that produced some warming nostalgia 😊👍🏻. I want to check out the audio now 😁! @OffTheBeatenShelf.com #KindredSpirits then 😉👍🏻👌🏻🙌🏻! @itsbrb @cariashley @Sarahr875 @KafkaKitten @TNbooklover66 @Ambrosnazzy @Abailliekaras @EnidBiteEm @Dragon Murakami fans in the house 😎😊👏🏻👌🏻🙌🏻! 8y
MrBook @GinaAnderson @Hobbinol @Sarahr875 @kaysreadinglife @LeahBergen @BeckyRoy @ellareads @katedfisher @Mdargusch @Moonpa A lot of love for Koch also 😊👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻🙌🏻! I'm reading Summer House right now and thoroughly enjoying it. 8y
MrBook @Lidia @Dogearedcopy @ellareads @Ashley31 @EnidBiteEm @Cortg @Moonpa I haven't read Paris Wife yet but @BookBabe liked it 😊👍🏻! @LauraBeth Thank you 😁😁😁👍🏻👌🏻! @kaysreadinglife @JenlovesJT47 @ellareads @Ambrosnazzy Readers of Mary's books tend to either like her work or not like, not much in the way of middle ground. @BookBabe and I had the chance last year to Skype with her for a couple hours, and it was awesome. 😁😆😎👌🏻! 8y
MrBook @johnnie_cakes @Lani_bug @megt I've heard good things about Juliet too, so I got it for @BookBabe 😊👍🏻. @JenlovesJT47 Glad you liked Dollface because I got it for @BookBabe 😁👏🏻👍🏻👌🏻! She loves the 20s as well 😊. @TNbooklover66 I like books with similar sounding titles 😁👍🏻👌🏻! @Zelma 😂😂😂 #shelfies & #readerporn 😂😂😂! @becausetrains #Coale needs to get off his butt and get a job 😂😂😂👏🏻! 8y
ReadingRover I need to read a Kubica book soon. I have a few on my list and can't decide which to start with! 8y
MrBook @ReadingRover I like to go in the order in which the books were written. If you want to follow suit, "The Good Girl" (which came out *before* "Gone Girl", by the way ?). ??? 8y

The Swan Thieves: A Novel | Elizabeth Kostova
post image

Like, OMG, I had to take a #shelfie! So, this is the other side of our #schoolmarm desk's middle shelf up close. Only three are mine, all the rest I bought for @BookBabe for her bday or Christmas or just because 😍😻. Any particular titles stick out to you? Any superbs and any meh's?

MicheleinPhilly In Cold Blood, Shine Shine Shine and To Kill a Mockingbird are all ACES. I thought reading Smilla's Sense of Snow was pure torture. 8y
TheLondonBookworm I'm liking the sound of Swan Thieves!! 8y
See All 19 Comments
Dogearedcopy I listened to 'In Cold Blood' (narrated by Scott Brick) and it is one of my all-time favorite books & audio! It's narrative non-fiction re the KBI's investigation of the Clutter family murders; and concludes with a thought provoking section on capital punishment (still within the narrative.) 8y
Dogearedcopy It's been ages and ages since I read/listened to 'Smilla's Sense of Snow' I had the honor of being the studio engineer of the now OOP audio narrated by the late, great Ralph Cosham. If I could find a copy of that audio, I would definitely re-listen 😊 8y
[DELETED] 2232195534 The Mirror by Marlys Millhiser is one of my fave books ever. Read it in my late teens and it was so unique to me at that time. 8y
Dogearedcopy And yet *another* audio-related recommendation, TKAM (narrated by Sissy Spacek) is one of the all-time great audiobooks! I had, of course, read it in print in high school (and didn't much care for it); but listening to it as an adult opened up that book for me on unexpected ways (I could "see" the structure and themes that were not obvious to me before) and SS's performance is impressive. 8y
Dogearedcopy I was only "meh" on 'Hell House.' The masterwork is Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House.' All other haunted house stories seem like derivative and weak by comparison. 8y
HotTeaGoodBooks Oh, I had forgotten about The Swan Thieves! That was a good book. And now I'm reminded why The a Historian is on my shelf as well. Must get to that one... 8y
DGRachel @Dogearedcopy - I second the TKAM audiobook recommendation. Sissy Spacek was fantastic! 8y
kspenmoll TKAM - Every year when I co-teach this novel learn something new from my students- In Cold Blood read years ago but audio sounds like a reason to reacquaint myself with the book. @Dogearedcopy @DGRachel 8y
BarbaraJean @ddevalco The Historian is amazing! I read it before The Swan Thieves... and I think I like it better. 8y
OrangeMooseReads To Kill a Mockingbird and In Cold Blood. It's always good to see those friends together. 8y
Melkyl Yes on TKAM and In Cold Blood! 8y
LeahBergen @OrangeMooseReads Just like when Harper Lee and Truman Capote lived side-by-side as children in Monroeville, Alabama 😍 8y
LeslieO That's a good shelf. Smilla's Sense of Snow has been in my TBR pile for awhile. Enjoyed the Swan Thieves. 8y
Tanner I enjoyed Shine Shine Shine. 8y
ApoptyGina69 One I LOVED The Historian too. 8y

Twain's End | Lynn Cullen
post image

A #shelfie pic! I made a post a couple weeks ago showing off the hoard of books on my and @BookBabe 's #schoolmarm desk. A lot of Litsy-ers wanted better detail since I took that picture from a distance in order to get the scope of it all. So, this morning I took some close-ups. Here is slightly less than one-half of the middle shelf. Any titles here you've read? Any you want to read? Most are hers that I've gotten her for special occasions 😊.

RealLifeReading Kate Atkinson! Love her. Also read the Stewart O'Nan but didn't really like that, unfortunately! 8y
Litlady 👍 🌟 🤓 ‼️ 8y
KimM Life after Life was very good. 8y
See All 28 Comments
Angelala007 I loved Life After Life and would like to borrow Library of Souls 🤗🙃 8y
marixa Life After Life but also love Chris Pavone 8y
Dogearedcopy I read 'The Revenant' and saw the film afterwards. Punke did a lot of research for the fictionalized account, so sometimes it reads like NF. It's good; but I actually liked the movie better! The scriptwriters did a better job of creating a more balanced story arc, richer in historical context (e.g. the Kiowa,) and wrote a more satisfying, if less didactic ending. 8y
BeckyRoy I most want to read The Revenant! 8y
Dogearedcopy I also read 'Life After Life' and loved it! There are a couple of things in it that I hope are explored more in 'A God of Ruins' but regardless an excellent book club/group read (so much to talk about!) Looking forward to AGIR! 8y
BookBabe 😁🙌🏻 8y
OrangeMooseReads Library of Souls was good. I enjoyed the Miss Peregrine series. 8y
LeahBergen I have Life After Life (great) and The Revenant (TBR). Why oh why is a #shelfie just so fascinating? 😍 8y
callunakeep Library of Souls is a fabulous read! 8y
Blair_Reads I enjoyed Before I go to Sleep 😴🙀 8y
HeatherBookNerd Anothe Kate Atkinson fan here. Love all her books. Enjoyed The Girl You Left Behind too. 8y
ValerieAndBooks I've read some of those authors but not specifically the books on your / @BookBabe 's shelf. Very intrigued about Twain's End synopsis (Helen Keller in a love triangle?!) even though I wasn't crazy about the author's "The Creation of Eve" (not enough on Sofonisba Anguissola, IMO). 8y
Mdargusch I read Before I Go To Sleep and The Girl You Left Behind. I recommend both of those books. Jojo Moyes told a WWII story with a different slant on it. 8y
Karkar There are some good books there! 📚😍😍 8y
Moonpa Life after Life is wonderful!👍 8y
MicheleinPhilly LOVED Sutton!!! 8y
BillKathyWms I really enjoyed Life after Life!! 📚❤️ 8y
