Twain's End | Lynn Cullen
32 posts | 13 read | 34 to read
Reputation-squaring novel. Cullen splashes a surplus of fuel onto her incendiary raw material. New York Times Ms. Cullen is the Bronte of our day. Huffington Post A People Pick Intelligently drawn. Library Journal Starred Review from Publishers Weekly From the bestselling and highly acclaimed author of the page-turning tale (Library Journal, starred review) Mrs. Poe comes a fictionalized imagining of the personal life of Americas most iconic writer: Mark Twain. In March of 1909, Mark Twain cheerfully blessed the wedding of his private secretary, Isabel V. Lyon, and his business manager, Ralph Ashcroft. One month later, he fired both. He proceeded to write a ferocious 429-page rant about the pair, calling Isabel a liar, a forger, a thief, a hypocrite, a drunkard, a sneak, a humbug, a traitor, a conspirator, a filthy-minded and salacious slut pining for seduction. Twain and his daughter, Clara Clemens, then slandered Isabel in the newspapers, erasing her nearly seven years of devoted service to their family. How did Lyon go from being the beloved secretary who ran Twains life to a woman he was determined to destroy? In Twains End, Lynn Cullen reimagines the tangled relationships between Twain, Lyon, and Ashcroft, as well as the little-known love triangle between Helen Keller, her teacher Anne Sullivan Macy, and Annes husband, John Macy, which comes to light during their visit to Twains Connecticut home in 1909. Add to the party a furious Clara Clemens, smarting from her own failed love affair, and carefully kept veneers shatter. Based on Isabel Lyons extant diary, Twains writings and letters, and events in Twains boyhood that may have altered his ability to love, Twains End explores this real-life tale of doomed love.

In March of 1909, Mark Twain cheerfully blessed the wedding of his private secretary, Isabel V. Lyon, and his business manager, Ralph Ashcroft. One month later, he fired both. He proceeded to write a ferocious 429-page rant about the pair, calling Isabel “a liar, a forger, a thief, a hypocrite, a drunkard, a sneak, a humbug, a traitor, a conspirator, a filthy-minded and salacious slut pining for seduction.”

EadieB Twain and his daughter, Clara Clemens, then slandered Isabel in the newspapers, erasing her nearly seven years of devoted service to their family. How did Lyon go from being the beloved secretary who ran Twain‘s life to a woman he was determined to destroy? 2y
EadieB In Twain‘s End, Lynn Cullen “cleverly spins a mysterious, dark tale” (Booklist) about the tangled relationships between Twain, Lyon, and Ashcroft, as well as the little-known love triangle between Helen Keller, her teacher Anne Sullivan Macy, and Anne‘s husband, John Macy, which comes to light during their visit to Twain‘s Connecticut home in 1909. 2y
EadieB Add to the party a furious Clara Clemens, smarting from her own failed love affair, and carefully kept veneers shatter.
Based on Isabel Lyon‘s extant diary, Twain‘s writings, letters, photographs, and events in Twain‘s boyhood that may have altered his ability to love, Twain‘s End triumphs as “a tender evocation of a vain, complicated man‘s twilight years and a last chance at love”

EadieB This book is very interesting and has changed my way of thinking about “America's Sweetheart“ Mark Twain. It is about the relationship between Isabel Lyon and Samuel Clemens which turned sour after she married his business manager, Ralph Ashcroft, which he blessed. After one month, he fired both and wrote a ferocious 429 page rant and slandered Isabel and erased her seven years of devoted service to their family. 2y
EadieB If you love historical biographies, then you would love this book. 2y

Historical fiction-esque. Interesting characters and an interesting storyline in theory...but it seemed to drag on forever and struggled to keep my attention.

Enjoyed this buddy read with @Lynnsoprano (check her review also). For me, this is between a pick and so-so. It bothered me how Helen Keller was depicted: vacant-eyed (well she couldn't see!) and a voice that annoyed Clara (Twain's daughter, who I was surprised to find was the least sympathetic character in this novel). Love triangles galore, including one with Helen in it (I was already aware). I'm unsure what purpose it served to include hers.

ValerieAndBooks Once again I really wish #Litsy would add a rating that's between pick and so-so! 7y

This was the first buddy read that I've ever done, with @ValerieAndBooks . I enjoyed the experience and the book. It had an almost unfinished feeling to it, yet I think that's to be expected, given that Isabel Lyon never spoke out and told her side of the story. There aren't many sympathetic characters here. I felt the author did a good job of portraying the Clemens/Twain dichotomy. Who was he in a given situation? #LetterT for #LitsyAtoZ

ValerieAndBooks I enjoyed this buddy read with you 😊and glad you enjoyed this book! I'm still mulling over how to rate this book, and my review for it. It's one of those, that for me, falls between a pick and so-so. It's true the characters were unlikeable but I think my issue is more how the book was structured. I agree that it felt somewhat unfinished. I'm going to look up the non-fiction books that focuses on this story. It's an interesting one. 7y
Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks I agree that there some oddities, like suddenly jumping back to the scene with Helen Keller. And it did drag at points. I had watched an American Masters episode on PBS about Twain and knew some of the family dynamics going into the read. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Lynnsoprano I felt like I had some background also, but still was surprised at how unsympathetic Clara was portrayed. I know for her it couldn't have been easy being Twain's daughter. 7y

Hmm. 🤔. Mr. Gabrilowitsch goes up with a hot water bottle, then shows up a few hours later with an ice bag? (It's winter time, BTW). I feel like the book is rushing to its conclusion (~50 pages left) and thus the mistakes in the details here. And on the same page of the ice bag, Francis Bacon's first name is misspelled Frances. @Lynnsoprano

Lindy Continuity errors really bother me. I end up rationalizing, i.e. Is Ossip perhaps alternating hot and cold treatment for his earache? 7y
CrowCAH Good catch! 7y
Hollie Where is the editor on this stuff?! 7y
See All 8 Comments
ValerieAndBooks @Lindy same here! But when Isabel had sent him upstairs with the hot water bag, she discussed other options such as blowing smoke into the ear, and ice was *not* one of the options. Maybe Ossip decided on his own?! 😂 7y
ValerieAndBooks @CrowCAH @Hollie maybe the editor got those pages just before a deadline 🤷🏻‍♀️? It's funny that Ossip Gabrilowitsch has not yet been misspelled, but two real-life people with simpler names have been (so far). 7y
CrowCAH @ValerieAndBooks hmm very interesting. 7y
Hollie @ValerieAndBooks and weren't both of those real life people named Francis? Maybe the author secretly hates someone by that name in their personal life. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @Hollie kind of, yes! Philip Key was misspelled, and he was the son of Francis Scott Key who was not actually mentioned by name but it was obvious who because of the Star Spangled Banner reference. You may be onto something there 💡! We both know Frances/Francis get mixed up all the time, but shouldn't have been here. 7y

Typo alert...surprising, considering that this is a paperback edition and could have been corrected in this, a later, edition. Last name should be Key, not Keyes. This is historical fiction, but still...

Lynnsoprano @ValerieAndBooks I'm up to chapter 14. The relationships in the Clemens family and Isabel's relationship with each family member are really driving the story. I've read quite a bit today😄 7y

So behind on #Litsy! Several reviews to do but they'll probably wait until next week. This week is spring break for my college kids, among other things. Meanwhile doing this buddy read with @Lynnsoprano . Not bad so far (@Ch. 3) but a bit tired of Clemens/Twain constantly being referred to as The King (his secretary's nickname for him). My reading progress may be a bit slow until next week, but Lynn, don't slow down for my sake 😊

Cinfhen Can't believe it's spring break with snow in your yard! 7y

⭐⭐⭐ I'm sad that I read this because now my image of Mark Twain is forever tainted. I never knew he was such an unlikable jerk (who loved little girls perhaps a tad too much and was incentivized by money more than I ever knew). I also failed to see what his secretary ever saw in him to be attracted to him. This just wasn't an enjoyable reading experience for me ☹️#litsyatoz

Laalaleighh This is why I don't read books about Lewis carrol 7y
ValerieAndBooks I knew Mark Twain was a curmudgeon. I'm interested in reading this to see how Helen Keller is portrayed -- so many people have her on a pedestal but she was very human and I understand the author portrays her as such? 7y
LauraBeth @ValerieAndBooks you nailed it on the head - at the end of the day everyone depicted in the book is very human and flawed. I think what was tough about reading it was that I felt that the people weren't shown in a "balanced" way. It was just, "let's expose ALL the flaws and show everyone as unlikeable..." Reading about Helen Keller was interesting - I think we're so used to thinking of her in one way but she had romantic desires like everyone else 7y

A #shelfie pic! I made a post a couple weeks ago showing off the hoard of books on my and @BookBabe 's #schoolmarm desk. A lot of Litsy-ers wanted better detail since I took that picture from a distance in order to get the scope of it all. So, this morning I took some close-ups. Dogearedcopy I read 'The Revenant' and saw the film afterwards. Punke did a lot of research for the fictionalized account, so sometimes it reads like NF. It's good; but I actually liked the movie better! The scriptwriters did a better job of creating a more balanced story arc, richer in historical context (e.g. the Kiowa,) and wrote a more satisfying, if less didactic ending. 8y
