My favorite of the series so far! Love the complexity of all the characters. It‘s grown to epic proportions in terms of plot, world, characters, and themes. It did take me forever to get through but it was totally worth it.
I finally finished it!! I feel like I was reading it for years. That was a lot, and could have easily been broken up into two novels. I have lots of thoughts, but not enough space on here to do it. In brief, it was good, dark, violent, complicated, not very stressful, and long. Whew.
I‘m officially postponing DARK AGE for now. I took a break from the audio, thinking maybe a print version would feel less anxiety-inducing, but NOPE. I am just not in the right place for this book right now. 😰
So, what else from my #librarystack should I read?? I‘m thinking the Vanderbeekers might be next, because they‘re probably my least stressful option, right?
Y‘all, this book is massive. I thought I put the ebook on hold at the library, but I put the physical copy. Which is normally fine, but this is HUGE. So yeah, I‘ll probably be in the ER with a broken nose or a fractured jaw soon.
Nurse: what happened?
Me: I tried to read in bed.
I have been reading this book in fits and starts literally since the day after it came out. I love pierce brown, but he writes a dense book. This was was huge, with wall to wall action and fighting. It took me a while to get back into the universe, characters, and action. But once I did I was all in.
Well, that was seventeen hours of pure fucking misery.
It‘s good, in the sense that it‘s effective fiction, but damn. Don‘t read if you need a pick-me-up. Read it if you want to have your heart ripped out and stomped on over and over and over and over.
Also, maybe don‘t read it until the third book‘s out, if you can possibly resist.
And be aware, Brown leans into the crappy tropes again, as discussed below under a spoiler tag.
I spent my Labour Day morning labouring to clean up all this dude‘s shed hair. It‘s a miracle he isn‘t bald.
DARK AGE really should be titled EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE FOR EVERYONE. I mean, shit. Approximately three nice things have happened as of chapter 86, and they‘ve all since been undone. I kind of expect the next book to end with the whole galaxy being destroyed because it‘d be a logical progression from here. #audiocleaning
The skies are still cloudy and DARK AGE is still terrible for everyone (except maybe Ephram/Ephron/Dude Whose Name I Should Just Look Up Already).
But hey, I hit chapter 74/92 on my #audiowalk, so I‘m sort of in the home stretch! Someday, somehow, I‘ll reach the end of this misery—and have to endure a whole other kind of misery as I wait for the next book.
As expected, August was a much more normal reading month for me. 59 books & comics total—heavy on the comics as I had two months to catch up on. Favorites include Dark Age (no explanation necessary), Destiny of the Republic & Under the Banner of Heaven—very well-written & interesting nonfiction—The Marvel Art of Skottie Young, a treasure trove of information & art, & finally Middlewest #10 because the art & story continues to be phenomenal.
Beautiful day so I'm sitting outside on the front deck reading about death, war, and destruction. 🤷♂️
Its a little strange listening to the birds chirp away as I read about people being torn into two and burned alive from lasers and napalm. 😅
Y‘all, DARK AGE is straight up misery porn. It‘s THIS IS US in space.
But hey, look at the sweet ride I found on my #audiowalk!
It took me a few chapters but after I really got into it I didn't want to put it down. I love the complicated characters, sometimes the heroes make huge mistakes, sometimes the villans are all too human.
A couple of character comebacks are a bit too convenient for my taste.
I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series.
Today‘s #audiowalk was rather Industrial Chic.
I‘m now on chapter 56/92, so maybe I‘m over halfway through DARK AGE? The audio quality was fine in Part I, but since Part II began it‘s picked up the same volume modulation problem that made IRON GOLD so hard to listen to. All Darrow‘s POV segments are way quieter than everyone else‘s, and Ephram‘s Obsidian dialogue is painfully low. DAMMIT, audiobook producers, CORRECT THESE ISSUES IN POST.
Between a walk to the store and the time I spent cleaning this dude‘s hair off of everything, I hit chapter 40/92. I‘m at the point where basically, everything‘s terrible for everyone and I‘m DEEPLY DISTRESSED. #audiocleaning
My Dark Age Hangover Recovery Box from FaeCrate finally arrived. It is everything I hoped for and more. I had plans for the weekend, but once my Reaper Cosplay Snuggie is washed, those plans are cancelled. I will be reading under my Snuggie while crying into my plushie Sevro. 😍 Hail Reaper! #OmnisVirLupus
I made zoodles for supper. My neighbour gave me two enormous zucchini and approximately 75 grape tomatoes; can‘t let ‘em go to waste.
I‘m now 31/92 chapters into DARK AGE, and it feels very much like an epic fantasy despite its science fictional bones. Brown utilizes his various POVs a little differently here than he did in IRON GOLD, and the whole thing‘s giving me a Wheel of Time vibe. (Solid WoT, not messy WoT.) I approve. #audiocooking
This was an #audiobaking day. I now have a whole bunch of chard chips and the sponges for a Limey Bastard (a zucchini cake filled with lime curd and topped with cream cheese frosting).
I sure wish RBdigital‘s interface would tell me how much of DARK AGE I‘ve listened to already. All I know is I‘m at chapter 14 of 92, which isn‘t much help if I want to gauge my progress. Which I do.
Sock progress: heel turn edition. This pattern uses a new-to-me method and I‘m in love with it! No stitches to pick up along the edge of the gusset! No holes! Hurray!
I‘m gonna be doing a ton of #audioknitting over the next little bit, because RBdigital finally coughed up a copy of DARK AGE—and at 34 hours, it‘s the longest audiobook I‘ve ever tackled. I listen at 2x so it ain‘t quite as bad as it looks, but it‘s still a major commitment.
Ummmm...signed copies?! Yes please!!! 😍 Click the link for a signed copy of Dark Age & check out our Instagram TV channel for the full interview/ Instagram Live we did with Pierce Brown! 🔗 https://www.strandbooks.com/science-fiction/dark-age-book-5-of-the-red-rising-sa...
Ok folks. I'm down to the last 100 pages of this book that I feel like I've been reading forever. It's taking longer to read because of the number of characters, the amount of action, it's pretty dang grim, and well, it's over 700 pages long! But it's well worth the read - the whole series is.
Finally got my videos up this week. Had to film them multiple times because my camera kept not being in focus. But I got all of them up, including my way-too-long Dark Age review.
Still a bit new to Litsy. I keep seeing things about Bookmark Swapping. Was wondering what it was and how one gets into it? If it‘s something through Litsy or from something else.
Warning—once you start this book, you won‘t be able to put it down. Reading when you have a large window of time (yay summer vacation) highly recommended. If you‘re like me, you‘ll sit down to read this book with your stomach in knots—knots that will only get tighter & tighter as you read. This is definitely a middle book—albeit a very good, very violent, very entertaining one. All the pieces are in place & I can‘t wait to see what happens next.
There‘s no getting around the fact that this one‘s going to hurt, right? After all, as my daughter pointed out when I tried explaining to her why I hadn‘t already started it, Golden Son is my favorite & it‘s not for the faint of heart...This one can‘t be any worse, can it?!? 🤞I know it‘s going to be fabulous but I‘m also expecting to have ALL the feels. Enough procrastinating. Time to rip the band-aid off and dive into my next book.
This book was so good. I wish I would have remembered to reread the previous 4 books in the series first, but despite that oversight I still loved this book. Can‘t wait for my red rising reread.
Full review will be up on channel tomorrow. Look me up: KtheBookwyrm
It‘s official, I‘m a BookTuber. I‘ve got 3 videos up so far and plan on doing 3 a week. Reviews, tag videos, readathons, book stuff! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwnznUQr9GwuWkN9k6TPmbg
This is NOT my best photo (angle: 🤮👎🏼) but here is photographic proof that I got to meet my hero/heartthrob Pierce Brown and make an absolute blubbering fool of myself! 😱😍 We moved away from the Seattle area right before he toured there, but just happened to arrive in the DC area the same evening as his event here!
Love being away for 2 months and coming home to some of my most anticipated book mail of the year. If you‘re a fan of Brown‘s Red Rising series—and I am—it‘s impossible, I think, not to view this book with equal parts dread and excitement... Of course I WANT to read it but I know it won‘t be easy because everything leading to this one says THINGS HAVE TO HAPPEN and they won‘t all be good. That‘s the joy, right? Can‘t wait to get started.
I‘m so excited Pierce Brown stopped by a local book store on his Dark Age tour; not only so I could meet him, but so that my husband could meet him as he‘s his favorite author. My husband‘s never been a reader, so I was giving him audiobooks to try and he devoured Red Rising and the rest of the trilogy. Brown is such a nice person and seriously brilliant! (M & T for Meredith & Tyler 😊)
