I preordered this one but have yet to be in the mood for it.

DrexEdit The cover 😍 3w
DGRachel I ordered it back in 2017. It arrived and after sobbing through the first 3 three chapters, I put it down and haven't picked it back up, yet. I feel kind of guilty about that. 3w

TheSpineView @DGRachel I have heard similar responses and that is why I am putting it off. I will need to be in the right frame of mind to read it. 3w
DGRachel Yeah - right now I can only handle lighter things. I'll get to it eventually, although since there isn't even a title or release date for the final book, that “eventually“ could be a long way away. LOL 3w

My favorite of the series so far! Love the complexity of all the characters. It‘s grown to epic proportions in terms of plot, world, characters, and themes. It did take me forever to get through but it was totally worth it.

Science fiction at its absolute best. The books in this series have all been thrilling to read. The writing beautiful. The story compelling. I‘m excited to start the latest in the series.

I finally finished it!! I feel like I was reading it for years. That was a lot, and could have easily been broken up into two novels. I have lots of thoughts, but not enough space on here to do it. In brief, it was good, dark, violent, complicated, not very stressful, and long. Whew.

I‘m officially postponing DARK AGE for now. I took a break from the audio, thinking maybe a print version would feel less anxiety-inducing, but NOPE. I am just not in the right place for this book right now. 😰

So, what else from my #librarystack should I read?? I‘m thinking the Vanderbeekers might be next, because they‘re probably my least stressful option, right?

Sace I wouldn't do The Nickel Boys. I loved it but it is an emotionally tough read. 2mo

I have been reading this book in fits and starts literally since the day after it came out. I love pierce brown, but he writes a dense book. This was was huge, with wall to wall action and fighting. It took me a while to get back into the universe, characters, and action. But once I did I was all in.

Well, that was seventeen hours of pure fucking misery.

It‘s good, in the sense that it‘s effective fiction, but damn. Don‘t read if you need a pick-me-up. Read it if you want to have your heart ripped out and stomped on over and over and over and over.

Also, maybe don‘t read it until the third book‘s out, if you can possibly resist.

And be aware, Brown leans into the crappy tropes again, as discussed below under a spoiler tag.

xicanti In this case, he‘s ditched Inspirational Dead Wives for Kill Your Gays. On the one hand, this is a super violent book and a ton of hereto people also die. On the other, of the six on-page queer characters across all five books, three are now dead and one‘s been mindwiped. Them‘s some bad odds. (edited) 3mo

I spent my Labour Day morning labouring to clean up all this dude‘s shed hair. It‘s a miracle he isn‘t bald.

DARK AGE really should be titled EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE FOR EVERYONE. I mean, shit. Approximately three nice things have happened as of chapter 86, and they‘ve all since been undone. I kind of expect the next book to end with the whole galaxy being destroyed because it‘d be a logical progression from here. #audiocleaning

xicanti @Riveted_Reader_Melissa this sounds like a good plan. I kind of wish I‘d waited so I could maybe, possibly, get a little relief from the end of the third book. I know this one‘s gonna end terribly, since middle books in these sorts of trilogies always do. 3mo

The skies are still cloudy and DARK AGE is still terrible for everyone (except maybe Ephram/Ephron/Dude Whose Name I Should Just Look Up Already).

But hey, I hit chapter 74/92 on my #audiowalk, so I‘m sort of in the home stretch! Someday, somehow, I‘ll reach the end of this misery—and have to endure a whole other kind of misery as I wait for the next book.

I read 12 books in August. My favorites were Dark Age and Angel in a Devil's Arms.

blurb
TracyReadsBooks
post image

As expected, August was a much more normal reading month for me. 59 books & comics total—heavy on the comics as I had two months to catch up on. Favorites include Dark Age (no explanation necessary), Destiny of the Republic & Under the Banner of Heaven—very well-written & interesting nonfiction—The Marvel Art of Skottie Young, a treasure trove of information & art, & finally Middlewest #10 because the art & story continues to be phenomenal.

MrBook Whoa! That‘s alotta books!!! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 3mo
TracyReadsBooks @MrBook It is! In truth, comics make up the majority of that number but there are a fair number of books as well. That number was only possible because we are still on summer break (until Tuesday) and after two months of not really reading while on excavation, I wanted to read everything I could get my hands on. ❤️📚❤️ 3mo

It took me a few chapters but after I really got into it I didn't want to put it down. I love the complicated characters, sometimes the heroes make huge mistakes, sometimes the villans are all too human.

A couple of character comebacks are a bit too convenient for my taste.

I am anxiously awaiting the next in the series.

Today‘s #audiowalk was rather Industrial Chic.

I‘m now on chapter 56/92, so maybe I‘m over halfway through DARK AGE? The audio quality was fine in Part I, but since Part II began it‘s picked up the same volume modulation problem that made IRON GOLD so hard to listen to. All Darrow‘s POV segments are way quieter than everyone else‘s, and Ephram‘s Obsidian dialogue is painfully low. DAMMIT, audiobook producers, CORRECT THESE ISSUES IN POST.

xicanti NB: I‘m guessing at Ephram‘s name, since it sounds more like Ephron to me but spellcheck says that‘s not a real name. I dunno. Maybe this is like the time I read the Vorkosigan Saga on audio and only learned much later that Dubh Galeni was really Duv Galeni. SFF names can be confusing. 3mo

I made zoodles for supper. My neighbour gave me two enormous zucchini and approximately 75 grape tomatoes; can‘t let ‘em go to waste.

I‘m now 31/92 chapters into DARK AGE, and it feels very much like an epic fantasy despite its science fictional bones. Brown utilizes his various POVs a little differently here than he did in IRON GOLD, and the whole thing‘s giving me a Wheel of Time vibe. (Solid WoT, not messy WoT.) I approve. #audiocooking

I‘m gonna be doing a ton of #audioknitting over the next little bit, because RBdigital finally coughed up a copy of DARK AGE—and at 34 hours, it‘s the longest audiobook I‘ve ever tackled. I listen at 2x so it ain‘t quite as bad as it looks, but it‘s still a major commitment.

Ok folks. I'm down to the last 100 pages of this book that I feel like I've been reading forever. It's taking longer to read because of the number of characters, the amount of action, it's pretty dang grim, and well, it's over 700 pages long! But it's well worth the read - the whole series is.

Warning—once you start this book, you won‘t be able to put it down. Reading when you have a large window of time (yay summer vacation) highly recommended. If you‘re like me, you‘ll sit down to read this book with your stomach in knots—knots that will only get tighter & tighter as you read. This is definitely a middle book—albeit a very good, very violent, very entertaining one. All the pieces are in place & I can‘t wait to see what happens next.

GrilledCheeseSamurai I bought it day 1...read the prologue (and friggen loved it) and haven't yet dipped into it for realz yet. Things have been crazy busy for me so I'm saving it until (hopefully) next week! 4mo

There‘s no getting around the fact that this one‘s going to hurt, right? After all, as my daughter pointed out when I tried explaining to her why I hadn‘t already started it, Golden Son is my favorite & it‘s not for the faint of heart...This one can‘t be any worse, can it?!? 🤞I know it‘s going to be fabulous but I‘m also expecting to have ALL the feels. Enough procrastinating. Time to rip the band-aid off and dive into my next book.

DGRachel I sobbed through the first three chapters on Kindle and had to step away. I‘ll get back to it when my FaeCrate shows up with my Sevro plushie to cuddle and my print copy of the book. Golden Son is my favorite, too, and I fully expect Dark Age to be worse.😭 4mo
MicrobeMom I feel the same way! I have been putting it off. Iron Gold made me sad. I was hoping for better for Darrow and Mustang. I will get there. Just not ready yet! 4mo
TracyReadsBooks @DGRachel This is exactly what I‘m worried about! 😭😭😭 More importantly, how in the world did I miss the existence of a Sevro plushie?!? So cool! 4mo
TracyReadsBooks @MicrobeMom Yes! Iron Gold also left me expecting things have to get worse before there is any chance of them getting better. And I anticipate the wait for the next one will be looooooooooong. I mean, maybe I‘m wrong—😂😂😂Yeah, right. Who am I kidding? It‘s Pierce Brown, this one isn‘t going to be easy (but I bet it will be very good). 4mo
