There There: A novel | Tommy Orange
post image
Pickpick

Simply stated, There There is a story about 12 urban Native Americans, struggling with identity and place, en route to an Oakland Powwow. But there‘s nothing simple about this debut that beautifully intertwines history, family, violence, truth, and story to a shattering conclusion. It‘s a marvelously architected story. And it‘s an important glimpse from a new literary voice that sheds light on people that rarely get to share theirs.

“New York is a city of 8 million people, approximately 7 million of them will be furious when they hear you were in town and didn‘t meet them for an expensive dinner, 5 million furious you didn‘t visit their new baby, 3 million furious you didn‘t see their new show, 1 million furious you didn‘t call for sex, but only five actually available to meet you. It is completely reasonable to call none of them.”

Screen siren Evelyn Hugo is entering her twilight season with a bang: a Christie‘s auction of her most stunning red-carpet gowns and a cover feature with Vivant Magazine. Vivant is thrilled, until its learned the only way Hugo will talk, is if the feature is done by rookie writer Monique Grant. Hmmmm.

Reid has written a book with enough intrigue to keep you up well past your bed time.

Touch | Adania Shibli
post image
Pickpick

Shibli has written a beautiful novella that centers around a little girl, known only as "little girl", the youngest of eight Pakistani children. She tells stories of the little girl and her experiences with life, death, learning to read, love, and more. The passages are some of the most beautiful I‘ve read. I am not sure I understand all that Shibli was trying to convey, but she (and translator Haydar) seduced me with their words. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Zambra packs a punch following a standardized test format while covering relationships, academics, politics, and Chilean life. Engaging, funny, sad, and absurd. Despite the style, I‘n not sure it‘ll stick with me... much like the info I crammed before an exam. But, it does inspire me to ask: After reading this write up, do you think I will:

A. Not read anything else by Zambra
B. Trade it
C. Read more by Zambra
D. C. The answer is always C.

Lizzy plans an Italian getaway for their 20th anniversary, when cheater hubs Ty says work must keep him home. Lizzy goes anyway and meets rockstar-on-hiatus Ren Sawyer. Lizzy and Ren hit it off. Of course Ty goes to Italy. And of course Ren and Ty duke it out. And then a ridiculous storyline forces Lizzy and Ty back to reality. Will Ty and Lizzy work things out? What about the Rocker with a heart of gold but a sketchy past? Who knows? Who cares?

CC de Poitiers is despicable. No one likes her—not even her daughter, husband, or side piece. When CC‘s murdered in plain sight while at a curling match, figuring out how and who is impossible. Unless you are Armand Gamache, Homicide Chief of the Surete du Quebec. I devoured it and adored hearing Ralph Cosham narrate. He was like the French Papa I never had telling me a clever bedtime story about murder in the snow-capped village of Three Pines.

Eleanor is a different bird. Thirty years old, she lives a life built on routine: boring job, weekly calls with her mum, Friday stops at Tesco for pizza and vodka, and holing up for the weekend. She‘s judgy, snarky, and off-putting. So is she just a crank? Just a bitter biddy? Nope. Once you peel away the layers, she‘s more complex than that. By the end, I was cheering for Eleanor and I think you will too.

P.S. The audio version is great.

The Power | Naomi Alderman
post image
Pickpick

The Power is a futuristic tale about girls‘ ability to electrocute boys. This creates a shift placing females in charge. Sounds like Girl Power, amirite? Nope. It's about what power means and how it‘s used/abused. It stars Roxy, a crime family‘s daughter who wants to avenge her mom‘s death; Allie, an escapee of an abusive foster home; Margot, a ladder-climbing politico; and Tunde, an opportunistic Nigerian media rookie. Oh! Audio version is DOPE!

GirlMeetsBook So excited to hear that the audio was dope. I just started it and I was slightly confused with the beginning letters... but I‘m sticking through since I convinced my book club to read it! 7y

This brief biography is a great primer on our second-appointed female Supreme Court Justice. I was impressed to learn of her rise to our highest court and her commitment to equality of all. She has been a part of a number of important cases, as both a lawyer and a judge that enable us to continue enjoying many of the freedoms we all enjoy. And she doesn‘t appear to be stopping. Let‘s hope she continues well through this administration.

The great-great-great grandkids of Sherlock Holmes & Watson are attending a CT boarding school when a loathsome classmate is murdered. Charlotte Holmes and James Watson have only just met when the student both are connected to mysteriously ends up dead. The two become suspects who must work together to solve the crime and clear their names. The book is a fun romp of students behaving badly, while loosely following a classic Sherlock Holmes story.

The Bennett Family is full of daughters of marrying age and Mama B. is working 24/7 make sure it happens. Key to the story is Elizabeth, who is immediately taken with Mr. Darcy (as are her sisters) at a party where the Bennett women are set to meet potential suitors. But that quickly changes when Darcy‘s pompous attitude leaves them all less than impressed. More suitors follow. Then gossip and drama and a tidy ending. Rosamund is a dream narrator!

Nute I just watched this movie last night for the umpteenth time. I‘ve reread this book countless times. So now I guess I‘ll try the audiobook version. Why not? I love this story! 7y

Holla to the historical fiction lovers! THE ALICE NETWORK is some great storytelling. Super compelling. I really couldn‘t put it down/stop listening to it.
