Harry Potter: fun book | J.K. Rowling
post image

This comes awfully close to book banning to me.

Apologies, if the below link doesn't work. Give it a google if it doesn't. I tried 😂

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna215255

Texreader Yep 3d
TheBookgeekFrau @Texreader I'm just dumbfounded by this 😵‍💫 3d
willaful @KadaGul I don't think you read the article. I also don't think a business making a decision like this equates to book banning. Why *should* they carry her books? 3d
See All 23 Comments
julesG They aren't prohibiting access to the books like book bans in public or school libraries do, they are just not selling them. They could have handled it without the media fanfare, but that probably brings publicity and revenue. 3d
julesG @willaful Snap! 3d
CarolynM @willaful @julesG It‘s an interesting moral question for booksellers, don‘t you think? What will your conscience allow you to profit from? Where do you draw the line? 3d
julesG @CarolynM it is! I like it when people make a stand like that and(!) explain why they do it. 3d
ncsufoxes One of our small local bookstores has recently said they wouldn‘t sell HP books anymore. Someone said it was a book ban. The owner said no I get to decide what books I want to sell & authors I chose to support. At this time we all get to decide how to spend our money & who to support. Different religious groups have banned her books because of the theme of magic. We bought HP books when they first came out & they are there for my kids to read but 3d
ncsufoxes I won‘t buy anything else Rowling writes due to her views. I as a consumer can choose not to support her. 3d
lil1inblue It's a private business, not a public library. They can choose to sell what they wish. I imagine Rowling's views and vitriol are quite harmful to a number of their customers. 3d
TheBookgeekFrau I completely understand all your points. What bothers me is that when a book is pulled from a school it's still available in other places, yet it's called a book ban. So I'm having trouble seeing how this is different. Maybe my issue is with the term banned book in general; because books restricted from one place can still be obtained from others. @willaful @julesG @ncsufoxes @lil1inblue @CarolynM 3d
Reggie It‘s so funny my friend once asked me if I liked Harry Potter. And I said I loved Harry Potter. She asked if she should read it. I said yes but only if she stole the books. We could not purchase Harry Potter books and she‘ll be a billionaire sleeping on a mattress made of money. She‘ll be ok without queer dollars however it‘s shocking the stuff that comes out of her mouth when she wrote the hugest series about inclusion. 3d
TheBookgeekFrau @Reggie You are right about her finances, her money keeps making money regardless of all else lol I think it's a shame that such a great story is being maligned because of hatred. 3d
Reggie @TheBookgeekFrau that hatred is coming from her. A woman with a billion dollars behind her is coming for one of the most marginalized groups. Chica, she‘s a villain. 3d
TheBookgeekFrau @Reggie Ooops, I didn't mean you, personally. I mean the hate and anger surrounding this whole topic I've seen on social media; and I always think these poor books in the middle like {shrug} what did we do. (edited) 2d
Reggie Oh no I get that. I will always champion Harry Potter. Her, not so much. One of my favorite movies is The 9th Gate. Later I found out it‘s made by Roman Polanski who can‘t come back to the US because he raped a girl and fled the country. What am I supposed to do with that? I still love the 9th Gate. Him, not so much. 2d
TheBookgeekFrau @Reggie Oh good!! 😊 BTW, did your friend get a chance to read HP? 2d
willaful @TheBookgeekFrau A couple of things make it different. A school is a public institution, run by our tax dollars, and the books in a school library went through a decision making process, including expert evalulation, to be there. Also the young patrons of a school library don't necessarily have the means or opportunity to obtain books in other places.
2d
TheBookgeekFrau @willaful Thanks for your answer. I see your point. On a personal level, my gut says the willful removal of a book from any place books can be obtain is a ban. But my head says this bookstore is making a consumer protest because they don't want their money going to a place they don't support. It's such a slippery slope. 2d
Offmybookshelf I wonder if all authors are vetted or if this only happens when things have a lot of publicity. Booksmith also pulled Neil Gaiman‘s books but didn‘t announce it at the time. 2d
ncsufoxes In some ways it is a bit of a slippery slope. But independent booksellers should be able to choose what they want to sell or not. We also live in the world of online shopping & you can buy what you want online. Small, independent bookstores also don‘t have the space to carry every book made. I consider a ban more of libraries not having all books. Too many kids don‘t have access to books to allow them to figure out who they are or the stories they 2d
ncsufoxes want to read. I think a seller not selling a certain book is not necessarily a ban but a choice. As a consumer I can make a choice to go & spend my money at places that support my beliefs or values. If I don‘t like what a store stands for then I find another place to shop. 2d
TheBookgeekFrau @ncsufoxes Thanks for the discussion! I was jarred when I first read the article because it was the first time I heard of a bookstore refusing to sell a book. And then I had a good laugh thinking of my 20s year old self ranting and raving about how dare they ban a book as compared to me in mid 50s thinking I don't agree, but I see their point; and also wondering what other readers thought. Geez, I've come a long way😂 Thanks for opining along 💕😊 2d

KadaGul This book is awesome! I get her admiration for Vladimir Nabokov because I feel the same way about Emile Durkheim. The audiobook wasn‘t my favorite, so I just read the book instead. 😍🥰😍🥰 5d

TheBookgeekFrau @julieclair The first 1/4 or so made me so depressed I wanted to vomit from hopelessness. But as I read on, I felt more thoughtful and hopeful. Some of my initial reaction has a bit of a personal bend to it. Hope that helps 😊 5d

KadaGul During grad school, I read and wrote a paper about "Evicted," which explores the housing issues in some struggling neighborhoods in Milwaukee. I really enjoyed the research process and put lots of effort into making the information engaging and interesting. The author pours his heart into the writing, which makes the topic hit home even harder! 5d
TheBookgeekFrau @KadaGul He really does! I've added Evicted to my wish list. 5d

I am so glad there wasn't a thing on my agenda today except to finish this book! I have to admit, at just shy of the halfway point, I was really wondering why there was such love for this book. Didn't take much longer to find out! There's not much I can say that hasn't already been said except, if you're thinking of reading it--do it!!
