Skipping Christmas
Skipping Christmas | John Grisham
#1 "NEW YORK TIMES" BESTSELLER Imagine a year without Christmas. No crowded malls, no corny office parties, no fruitcakes, no unwanted presents. That s just what Luther and Nora Krank have in mind when they decide that, just this once, they ll skip the holiday altogether. Theirs will be the only house on Hemlock Street without a rooftop Frosty, they won t be hosting their annual Christmas Eve bash, they aren t even going to have a tree. They won t need one, because come December 25 they re setting sail on a Caribbean cruise. But as this weary couple is about to discover, skipping Christmas brings enormous consequences and isn t half as easy as they d imagined. A classic tale for modern times, "Skipping Christmas" offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy that have become part of our holiday tradition."

Are we supposed to like the Kranks? Because I'm finding them to be entirely unsympathetic. Luther is, quite frankly, an ass. And Nora is more of a plot point than a character, I find her entirely devoid of personality. Is this purposeful? Or is Luther supposed to be an Ove-like grump who you root for beneath his grumpy exterior, and Grisham has just missed the mark for me?

It's not a long read, so I'm sure I'll finish, but so far I'm not sold.

#unpopularopinion I am not the target demographic for this book and I thought it was all kinds of awful. The book exudes upper class white privilege. If this was meant to be satirical, it fell flat. The subtle racism was 🤮.

I finished because my mom loves this book. I find it both hilarious and sad the Krank‘s remind me so much of my parents, esp the way they treat each other, but they don‘t see the resemblance AT ALL. 🤷🏻‍♀️

NO. Not okay. 🤮

I know this type of subtle racism is rampant in small communities. I grew up with it, and this could have been my parent‘s exact reaction when I dated a PoC in high school. That doesn‘t make this okay.

TheKidUpstairs 😲 that's awful! 1mo
Liatrek Ugh! This on my list to read this month😞 that passage makes me want to chuck the book. 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @Liatrek yeah, my recommendation would definitely be to NOT read it. I‘m sure there are loads of better Christmas books out there. I didn‘t realize going into it this is what Christmas with the Kranks is based on. I might rewatch the movie to see if my somewhat positive memory of it holds up to the test of time. 1mo

ljuliel I‘m not sticking up for that behavior , but maybe stating a reason why this book leans in this direction. This is Grisham. He‘s my age and grew up in the South. Many people my age were raised the same. We aren‘t from the south, but I heard stuff much worse than this my whole life. Not excusing it , maybe explaining it. Authors tell a story from their viewpoint and what was programmed into them . We can learn by reading these. Not always GOOD thIngs 1mo
Liatrek @ljuliel I totally understand and honestly that was my first thought when I saw this post but it‘s definitely not what I want to see my Christmas book. 1mo
ljuliel Yes, agreed. @Liatrek You think of Christmas reads as happy stories that don‘t have any negative remarks in them. I think sometimes that we expect authors born 50 or 100 years ago to be politically correct. They weren‘t raised in a time or place where that was a term. 1mo
Liatrek @ljuliel I don‘t have any expectations that anyone should be politically correct. Everyone has a right to their opinion and view point whatever their age and I have a right not to want to read it over the holidays 😊 1mo
ljuliel Definitely. That‘s the good thing about today‘s world. Much more freedom for people to make informed decisions and do what‘s right for them. Some people are offended by certain books , where others are ok with them. @Liatrek 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @ljuliel @liatrek I feel mostly like you, Liatrek. I grew up around subtle and overt racism, it's not something I like to see in a book that I chose for a fun, light read. I don't expect the same thing from a book published 20 or more years ago than I would from one today. But there are many authors close in age to Grisham that don't do this. I prefer to read those books. And trying to help others who may have similar reading preferences to me. 1mo
Liatrek This is one of the many reasons I love Listy being able to express opinions in healthy communication without it devolving into negativity 😊 Happy Holidays to you both!!! @ljuliel @4thhouseontheleft 1mo
4thhouseontheleft @Liatrek @ljuliel Yes! We all have different reading opinions. I don‘t expect or want everyone to have the same opinion as me! That would be boring. 😃 1mo
marleed I grew up in a home by a father that would be now what we now call an anti- racist. On more than one occasion he stopped guests from telling off-color jokes. My friends were surprised by his ethnic artwork. I‘m embarrassed now I wasn‘t more appalled by the subtle racism here - my dad would not be proud of me. I guess I focused on the neighborhood and my gratitude for not living in such a place. 1mo
ljuliel @marleed How lucky you were ! That would be quite a refreshing place to live , with a parent who , in his own way, fought against such opinions. 1mo
marleed @ljuliel Oh yea - he took me out of a 4th grade class (70s) because I came home pouting. The teacher drew a circle on the board. If graded or behaved poorly she would write your name in the ‘N‘ baby circle. I thought I was unfairly written in one day. I tried to tell my story but my dad wouldn‘t let me say the N word. I didn‘t know what the word was and didn‘t know how to tell the story. That‘s just one example of his example to us. 1mo
marleed @4thhouseontheleft I absolutely love to read what you have to say! 1mo
ljuliel You certainly were fortunate to have him as an example ! @marleed 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly This isn‘t even subtle! How awful. 1mo

LiteraryinLititz Is it possible that phrase is meant ironically? 2mo
jb72 Personally I don‘t think the term is meant to mean unintelligent, but more in the sense of minimal in basic needs and a simpler way of life. 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @LiteraryinLititz Doesn't seem like it. 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @jb72 There is too much negative connotation to use it in this way, and without further detail, it doesn't work for me. That word has a history of bad anthropological methods rooted in racism, and was used too much to refer to any culture that didn't resemble European culture. Many anthropologists (even in 2001, when this was written), have condemned the use of “primitive“ to describe indigenous communities. (edited) 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @LiteraryinLititz Especially since I just read the part where they are relieved to meet their daughter's boyfriend and see that his skin is not as dark as they had feared. 😬 😤 2mo
LiteraryinLititz @4thhouseontheleft Yikes. Yeah, that is absolutely not ok. Are you going to keep reading? 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @LiteraryinLititz It's a short book, and I'm almost finished. I would have bailed, but I'm doing a #buddyread with my mom. So I've taken notes for that discussion. 😊 Honestly, the incident in the book reminded me so much of the time I told my parents I was dating my husband, who is Jewish, and my mom's response was, “Well at least he's not Muslim, Buddhist, or Middle Eastern“. Yeah...we didn't talk for a while after that one... 😣 2mo
marleed I read this a couple days ago and did flip to the publishing date (2004) to see if it explained some of the description of the daughter‘s Peace Corps mission. It did not. I did like the book - I think mostly because I‘m so content not to live in a fishbowl. Actually, I run from living in that type of environment! 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @marleed I ran too. Ran far and long. For a few years I even lived on the opposite side of the planet from my hometown. 🤣 1mo
marleed @4thhouseontheleft I‘ve always believed I was a better mother because I raised my kids in a different town (even state) than I grew up. And then when my kids grew up, I moved, and moved again. ...My husband had passed away and honestly i just couldn‘t bare another year of the fishbowl having interest in my decisions. 1mo

I read this because my Grandmother suggested it. It started out cute, but then took too long to get to the climax of the book. The main issue could have been prevented with some basic communication that would be normal in this situation. This was annoying because Grisham made a point of discussing other times when the characters spoke or had written during the 2 months. The resolution was predictable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ is generous, but it‘s the holidays.

A husband and wife decide to skip Christmas and go on a cruise since their only daughter won't be home - no decorations, gifts or party. Sounds wonderful to me and found it really disturbing how many of their family and friends gave them a really hard time for making that decision. I imagine that my family would react the same way, which is why I still did Christmas with my family but then immediately left the next day for a cruise.

Judging by a cover, at times that can be justified. But judging based on the movie? That has to be one of the worst crimes you can commit against books.

I love Skipping Christmas - but Christmas with the Kranks ... ugh. Chris' suggestion was Da Vinci Code - he loved the book and was bitterly disappointed in the movie.
So many possible examples. 😆

So you want to go on a cruise and take some time for yourself? You don't feel like going through the hassle of Christmas? Well too bad because you have neighbors from hell who will harass you to the point of drinking! This did not put me in the Christmas spirit, it put me in a spiteful spirit. Most of the neighbors were unlikable & ridiculously nosey. There was a redeeming quality to the ending, but a huge portion of the book was simply annoying.

BibliophileMomma Haven‘t read the book but the movie was hilarious. 2y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @Tiffy_Reads you might enjoy the book then. There's of course some differences between the book and movie (especially near the end), but it was interesting to compare the two and to get to know the characters in more detail through the book. 2y

Passages like this make me dislike the Krank's despite the fact that they are the most likeable characters in the entire book. I know in reality that this is an issue with some people, but I don't understand their fear either, i feel like they should be more concerned about how he treats their daughter than about what shade he is. 😒

No_One I agree with you. However, it is still a sad reality. There is a lot of truth in books, though, like it or not. I‘m of Indian descent, and this bother me too. Even Indians judge each other by how light or dark their skin is! It‘s awful. I hope this passage elicits negative reactions from other readers or makes some readers reflect upon their own bad behaviour. 2y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @No_One I know, it is an unfortunate reality. Seeing it in print or in real life always upsets me. This book is full of white privelage and subtle and perhaps unconscious racism, which is very realistic. I hope most readers see that passage negatively and it would be wonderful if people who can relate to these feelings would reflect on it as a result. 2y
No_One @Krystle1 here's hoping! 🥂 Don't let it get you down. Maybe your next book can bring you up! 🤗 2y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @No_One I hope so, this Christmas book wasn't as cheerful as I'd hoped it would be! ☺ 2y
