A Confederacy of Dunces
A Confederacy of Dunces | John Kennedy Toole
A Confederacy of Dunces is an American comic masterpiece. John Kennedy Tooles hero is one Ignatius J. Reilly, huge, obese, fractious, fastidious, and a latter-day Gargantua, a Don Quixote of the French Quarter. His story bursts with wholly original character, denizens of New Orleans lower depths, incredibly true-to-life dialogue, and the zaniest series of high and low comic adventures (Henry Kisor, Chicago Sun Times)

On this day 8 years ago, I met the Ignatius J. Reilly statue in front of the former DH Holmes department store in New Orleans. Our first, and somehow only, trip to this very hot and humid, incredible city. I want to go back! 🎷📿

#Two4Tuesday @TheSpineView

1. As much basic home and auto maintenance as possible- how to change a tire, how to change oil, how to unclog a drain, how to change a doorknob, etc. I think some schools do teach a little of this, but the more the better.

2. Ignatius J. Reilly lacks pretty much every life skill. 😄

does anyone know the backstory of this guy and this book? This was the only book he wrote, sadly he committed suicide. When his mom was cleaning out his room she found the manuscript of this book. She presented to publishers and no one wanted to run with it. But mom took it to one publisher and said- “if there‘s one punctuation or grammar error, you don‘t have to put this book out, but if there isn‘t then you do.” He took the bet. And here we are.

Twenty-five years ago I tried to read Confederacy of Dunces and bounced off it. Still found this (two-year-old) article really worth my time.

“Ignatius J. Reilly—the godfather of the Internet troll, the Abraham of neckbeards, the 4chan edgelord to rule them all—was no anachronism. He was a prediction.“

https://www.newyorker.com/books/second-read/the-uneasy-afterlife-of-a-confederac...

SamAnne I tried to read it 3 times in my 20s because a sibling kept pushing it. Hated it every time. Don‘t plan to try and read again but I will read this New Yorker article. 2y

I‘ve only ever heard people love this or they hate it. I must say I fall into the latter group. I found the MC annoying and pretentious and I wanted to slap the sh*t out of him. The supporting characters weren‘t any better. There was no story. I finished the book.
I couldn‘t see the brilliance that some people see in this book.

I‘m sure there was something here that everyone else understood and appreciated that I didn‘t but I just… didn‘t. The satire I always just noticed and went ‘oh that‘s a thing he did‘ but it was never funny or thought provoking. This just felt like an annoying man doing one thing after another.

Funny, entertaining. Maybe it's a generational thing or just my inability to appreciate the artistry of the humor, but the book is sort of billed as this hilarious uproarious comedy. I didn't experience that the way I would with a stand-up comedian or comedy movie. I wasn't reading & laughing hysterically at any point. The back story, if true, about the author & how this manuscript came to be published is truly remarkable.

Morning light photo as I finish this #bookspin book. Glad to have it off my TBR. I wish this was something I had tackled in college. The writing, satire and characters are worth discussing, and over analyzing. Toole was obviously an intellectual writer. But for a non academic read it is a bit of a drag. The characters are annoying with no redeeming qualities or scenes. The plot fell flat for me. I overall did not enjoy it.

The_Penniless_Author @TheSpineView Ugh, I guess "literary fiction", although I cringe anytime I use that term. Maybe "general fiction" would be better. I had a novella/short story collection published back in 2010, then self-published a collection of my short stories that had appeared in various online and print journals a couple years later. My book that's being published next year is a short novel. As you can tell by the timeline, this is very much a hobby for me ? 4y
