Fellside | Carey
The unmissable and highly original new thriller from the author of the international phenomenon "The Girl with all the Gifts.""" Fellside is a maximum security prison on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors. It's not the kind of place you'd want to end up. But it's where Jess Moulson could be spending the rest of her life. It's a place where even the walls whisper. And one voice belongs to a little boy with a message for Jess. Will she listen?

A solid 4/5. I was expecting more of a “haunted” type prison, but I really enjoyed M.R.Carey‘s version of a ghost. There was 3/4 subplots and they all supported each other nice and tidely.

I really enjoyed this book it wasn't scary, (which is why I picked it to begin with) but as I read it I was engrossed completely. Characters are pretty well defined and likable, you get to see the story through there eyes. If I had to classify the book I would say murder mystery, ghost story, and a thriller.

The story was slow moving and I only held on to the end because I kept hoping for the paranormal part to really take off.  I was looking to read a spine-tingling paranormal thriller that would take me into the belly of a haunted maximum-security prison, what I received was a literary version of Orange is the New Black meets Casper, The Friendly Ghost. …. I would say that overall I enjoyed this book, but it wasn‘t quite as gripping as The Girl With All The Gifts.
I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys a good supernatural mystery light on the scares. The book has a very cool premise, but it didn‘t quite give me the creeps that I was hoping for. It is still a very solid read however.

I can‘t handle how good this was. The Girl With All The Gifts is one of my top 10 favorites so naturally I had to read Fellside and it definitely doesn‘t disappoint. Different enough from TGWATG to feel fresh and exciting, while still feeling part of the same universe.

Finished this tonight. It was very slow but also very intriguing. The concept of the ‘other place‘ that is explored in this novel is rather reminiscent of Netflix‘s Stranger Things. I would definitely read more about the setting Carey created here.

This was a little strange and meandering (especially on audio) but I ended up really liking it! I've been listening to it on and off since mid October so it's definitely long but kept my interest up for the most part!

I would say definitely not as good as girl with all the gifts but worth a shot!

Loved this book so much! I really didn't know what to expect, but was so pleasantly surprised. The story was fantastic and so well woven together with all elements linking up. Was definitely hard to put down and very intriguing. Bought it from the horror section, which I wouldn't classify it as. But the slight mystery and fantasy elements worked well together in such an interesting setting. The characters were so fun and complex. So much fun!

It was more or less impossible for this book to surpass Carey's last book, The Girl with All the Gifts, so I tried to keep my expectations in check. Luckily it was a very good read, if not quite as taut and riveting. Set in a women's prison controlled by a vicious inmate and her prison guard lover, Fellside is a supernatural murder mystery that follows its heroine, Jess, into some dark and psychologically twisty place.

Jess is sent to a high-security women's prison for setting a fire in which a young boy died. As she is an addict and can't remember anything about the incident she accepts her punishment until her presumed victim begins to contact her and she decides she has unfinished business. The descriptions of the prison are great -the bent screws, corrupt medics and frightening inmates and the fantasy elements are woven in skilfully to the realistic story.

This was my freezer-worthy horror pick for #litsyreadingchallenge (and the letter F for #litsyAtoZ). This was definitely a creepy and claustrophobic read (set inside a women's prison e.g nowhere to run, nowhere to hide) and I enjoyed it very much, although I didn't find it to be keep the lights on scary. Definitely bloody and violent though if that's something you want to avoid. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I read Fellside because I loved The Girl With All The Gifts.
While I didn't like it nearly as much, I'd still give it a pick. Although I bet I would have considered bailing if I was reading instead of listening to the audio.
The momentum picked up about 2/3 in and I enjoyed that last third quite a bit.

I admit this one took a little time to get into, but the story needed the build up. This one worked on two sides. A woman's guilt about accidentally killing a child and finding redemption from "the other side". I like that once she made up her mind to make things right, she never backed away even when scared. Definitely a bit weird, but kept my interest enough to read in one day.

This was the cause of my reading slump. I tried so hard but it was no where near the quality of Girl With All The Gifts for me. I wouldn't call it a haunted prison story. I'd call it a haunted woman story and it took a very, very long time to get somewhere. I just didn't click all the way sadly.

I feel like it's taken me ages to read this book, but it was almost 500 pages and so much happened. Jess was a great central character, flawed and loveable, and the whole concept of ghosts hanging around with unsolved business isn't new but this book made them more like imaginary friends. So different to The girl with all the gifts, which I had really hoped for, so I got what I wanted. And now I want Carey to write another book!!
