Elementary, She Read: A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery
Elementary, She Read: A Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery | Vicki Delany
39 posts | 40 read | 52 to read
Gemma Doyle, a transplanted Englishwoman, has returned to the quaint town of West London on Cape Cod to manage her Great Uncle Arthur's Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium. The shop--located at 222 Baker Street--specializes in the Holmes canon and pastiche, and is also the home of Moriarty the cat. When Gemma finds a rare and potentially valuable magazine containing the first Sherlock Homes story hidden in the bookshop, she and her friend Jayne (who runs the adjoining Mrs. Hudson's Tea Room) set off to find the owner, only to stumble upon a dead body. The highly perceptive Gemma is the police s first suspect, so she puts her consummate powers of deduction to work to clear her name, investigating a handsome rare books expert, the dead woman's suspiciously unmoved son, and a whole family of greedy characters desperate to cash in on their inheritance. But when Gemma and Jayne accidentally place themselves at a second murder scene, it's a race to uncover the truth before the detectives lock them up for good. Fans of Sherlock Holmes will delight in the sleuthing duo of Gemma and Jayne in Elementary, She Read, the clever and captivating series debut by nationally bestselling author Vicki Delany."

Vicki Delany mysteries are a guilty pleasure for me. They're somewhat formulaic but always cozy and relaxing reads. This is the first in her series featuring the owner of a Sherlockian bookstore.

This was a fun mystery and I liked Gemma as a main character, but I wish the author had done more with the Cape Cod setting.

Cinfhen I just started reading this book, which has been on my shelf FOREVER and it‘s fabulous 4y
kspenmoll @Cinfhen It took awhile for me to warm up to her writing- its based on her journals- but the devastation of the capital city & the complex issues between Albanians & Serbs compelled me to research- I have been taking it slow because it can be difficult emotionally for me so I am invested right? She has just started the book club. I would recommend it! (edited) 4y
kspenmoll @Cinfhen My son had to read this book for a class so I picked it up & also loved it. Yes, fabulous!!! (edited) 4y

1. The tagged really made me want to visit Cape Cod!
2. The dark. It can still make me uncomfortable but I‘m no longer truly frightened by it.
3. I love cross stitch! LEGOs with my kiddo is also always a good time.
4. I‘m actually listening to The Last of Us menu music right now as I was browsing Litsy waiting for the game to load 😂

A fun bookshop cozy! I enjoyed the mystery a lot and didn‘t see the end coming at all! I do enjoy the main character, Gemma Doyle, I did find her annoying a handful of times but not enough to make me dislike her. I left the story with some unanswered questions, like why Estrada hates Gemma but I‘m hoping those will be answered later in the series!

Gemma Doyle is a British transplant to Cape Cod, co-owning a Sherlock themed bookshop. She is a modern, female reincarnation of Holmes, being hyper-observant and making deductions based on her observations. I could do without the commmon plot feature - a detective who irrationally suspects MC and/or has a chip on her shoulder, but it's a pretty good mystery, and I would listen to the next in the series.

This wasn't actually all that bad, but I just couldn't get past the blatant chic-lit tropes. It's a tribute to the quality of the writing that I stuck with it as long as I did.

I read three books in April and am about 100 pages from finishing another. But I have to go to work, so I don't know if I'll be able to finish it before April ends or not. This is my favorite book this month. It was a fun mystery with a wonderful friendship and some romantic tension thrown in for good measure. Quick read too. #bestofapril #aprilbookshowers

I've got four books I'm simultaneously reading...How do you all juggle reading multiple books at one time? Asking for a friend.... 🙈🙈

#bookproblems #lunchandabook #whodunnit #reader #booklover #multitasker #booklife

LeahBergen I can only read multiple books if they are different genres. 😬 8y
Lizpixie I usually go for the book that is either a. More convenient (ebook, audiobook, print) or b. What I'm in the mood for. I usually have an audiobook, an ebook & a few physical books on the go at once, in different genres. 8y
Jess_Read_This @LeahBergen That seems to be my problem... three of mine are fiction and that's where the struggle is. If I don't read one for a bit, I start to lose context with what happened in the story. 😕 8y
See All 13 Comments
Jess_Read_This @Lizpixie I have an audiobook in the reading pile and that does help! My issue seems to be my print books are similar genres and I'm losing focus. 8y
Lizpixie You need to drop a few for now and replace them with different books in varied styles. Otherwise you'll end up throwing yourself into a book slump, and no one wants that! 8y
Jess_Read_This @Lizpixie most excellent advice!! I can a slump in my future if I keep on my current path... 8y
Bookwitchery I go by whatever my mood is at the moment. :) 8y
Jess_Read_This @Bookwitchery That's how I usually roll but for some reason lately I'm having book guilt in not reading them all in a timely fashion 😂I need to let it go... 📚 8y
Bookwitchery @Jess_Read_This I totally get it. It's like slowing favoritism to one of your children. 8y
Jess_Read_This @Bookwitchery Ha!! Exactly! You said it perfectly 😂 8y
Bookwitchery Oops. I meant showing, not slowing. Lol 8y

If you love Sherlock Holmes, this is the cozy mystery for you! Gemma Doyle is the part owner of the Sherlock Holmes Bookshop and Emporium in New London, Massachusetts.

This is the first book in the new Sherlock Holmes Bookshop Mystery series. If this book is any indication, I think this series is going to be a great success!

Gemma runs a store devoted to Sherlock. She has acute powers of observation and often demonstrates this by pointing out things others don't notice. She comes off as a bit lofty and irritating. Maybe if her friend Jayne was the first person narrator instead of Gemma...I just didn't find her to be a very sympathetic character and had trouble liking her. But the mystery kept me in the dark and the end was a complete surprise.
