A Series of Unfortunate Events #5: The Austere Academy
A Series of Unfortunate Events #5: The Austere Academy | Lemony Snicket
As the three Baudelaire orphans warily approach their new home Prufrock Preparatory School : they can?t help but notice the enormous stone arch bearing the school?s motto Memento Mori or "Remember you will die." This is not a cheerful greeting and certainly marks an inauspicious beginning to a very bleak story just as we have come to expect from Lemony Snickett?s Series of Unfortunate Events, the deliciously morbid set of books that began with The Bad Beginning and only got worse. Things are getting a little dark on the pod today… but only in the most absurd, Lemony Snicket way possible! Author and Snicket fan Noelle Crooks makes her SSR debut for a discussion about the fifth book in the series, THE AUSTERE ACADEMY. Listen at the link in my bio!

The Baudelaire orphans are shipped off to boarding school with horrible living conditions, mind-numbing classes, and a nasty bully called Carmelita Spats. But they also meet the two Quagmire triplets, forming friendship and helping to thwart Count Olaf when he inevitably tracks them down again

Back to my unfortunate #series book 5. This is getting worse where the kids join a residential school ( and the school motto is ‘Remember you will die‘ ?!😰) So you can imagine the rest. Few nice characters are added into the series such as Quagmire triplets. But still it is as mysterious, anxious and adventurous as the previous ones. #seriesread2022 #bookspinbingo

Another chapter in the Baudelaire‘s tragic tale…and our introduction to the worst secondary character, Miss Carmelita Spats. I cannot stand her (which, I guess, is kinda the point)…⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is a kids book so I'll try not to be too judgemental. It just wasn't my favorite book in the series. I probably shouldn't have watched so much of the Netflix series if I was also going to read the books. Because the Netflix series is outstanding. This just wasn't my favorite chapter in the story. But I'm also an adult. Mostly.

Honestly, I think the series should have started with this book. The ones before are just as good, but I think it took too long to introduce some key characters/information/VFD. Maybe in the end everything will connect and I just wasn't able to pick on some things. I don't know.

I'm not done reading but I already think this is the best book in the series so far. The story really picks up and the introduction of new characters really helped.

Darthdad I loved this series. Might need to reread at some point 4y
pilardib @Darthdad I'm reading the series for the first time but I watched the Netflix show already so I know the plot. If you havent yet, watch the Netflix adaptation! In a lot of ways it's better than the books. 4y

My son continues to enjoy those series. This time the Baudelaire orphans attend a horrible academy and are of course trailed by the awful Count Olaf. As the series continues we start to get a bit more insight into Olaf‘a history and the backstory grows more intriguing. #middlegrade

JazzFeathers I've only read three of these books and really enjoyed them. Now you're making me want to read the rest 😆 5y
Blaire @JazzFeathers yay! I‘m enjoying them. I was worried that the trope of count Olaf in disguise would grow old but the mystery of his origins and the Baudelaire and Lemony Snicket gets more involved which has kept me and my 7 yo really interested. (edited) 5y

Good one!

Loving my journey with the orphans, and even though I had appreciated the fourth book in the series, I had my reservations about how these books would continue.

This one set it all back on track!

The children are sent to a prep school, and while ridiculous situations arise (of course), they also find friends in two triplets. And (of course) Count Olaf finds his way to them again.

Onto book number six!

KimberlyK I read these books a few years ago and still remember how clever they are! So many witty literature references! I also enjoyed the Netflix series with Neil Patrick Harris. I thought it was well done. 5y

Book 31 of the year, finished April 20, audio

Finally finished this one. I want to like this series, I really do, but I am having more and more trouble finishing the stories. I appreciate that the kids finally made some actual friends in the two Quagmire Triplets, but the overwhelming stupidity of the adults in this series is exhausting.

I sincerely hope that Snicket isn't narrating the next book, he's one of the worst narrators I've heard.

I read every morning to my kids. We‘ve been steadily working through A Series of Unfortunate Events. It‘s so fun to watch my 12 year old get certain references and laugh at the more mature jokes in all the books.

Whodunit85 Reading in the morning, I never thought of that! We always read before bed and sometimes it's a struggle. Maybe wake-up reading is a thing we should try. 7y
Theshadedbuffalo @Whodunit yeah!! It gets our homeschool morning started, but it also gives us a chance to just be with one another and enjoy something just for us. And series are always a great pick for this reason! It keeps them interested, wanting more, and then I get to have fun which the voices and narration. ❤️❤️ 7y

This was one of my favorites of the series so far besides #2. The children are sent to a horrible boarding school but they meet the triplets. There are only 2 of them because they lost their sibling in a fire. I enjoyed seeing the Baudelaire's finally having friends and even better, friends they could relate to. It made the book a lot more happy even though the ending was depressing as usual. I am reading them before I watch the Netflix episode.

So I just realized that season 2 of A Series of Unfortunate Events is coming to Netflix at the end of the month...guess what books just moved up to the top of my TBR! 😂 At least when I get my hands on all of the books, they're really quick reads!

Booksnchill So conflicted about Handler now.. such difficult times😬 7y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @Booksnchill Understandable! Whenever I come across an author that I'm unsure if I want to support, I will often try to get the books used, that way I can enjoy the story and the author doesn't really profit. 7y
Booksnchill Oh great idea- I come to a crossroads about whether to separate the art from the person and your solution works to address that- woody allen was my big bad but I already owned most of what I loved. Interesting questions that won‘t go away soon! 7y
KrystleTheBookSlayer @Booksnchill The used book solution works well I think! I do somewhat separate the art from the person, especially when it comes to movies and tv shows. I just tell myself that the majority of people working on the project were good people & deserve some recognition, but it can be hard sometimes 😂 7y

I had forgotten a lot of the details of this book, and maybe that's why the absurdist humor of it grabbed me more than any of the previous books this read-through. It also contains the first real hints at the overarching plot, though, so maybe this is just where the series really stats to hit its stride. #notaSOREjoke #VFD

Things are starting to get even more unfortunate, but also more interesting for the Baudelaires. They finally made some friends and they're onto a lead about the reason behind everything that's happening to them. This installment ended in a cliffhanger for the first time, so I'll read the next one soon!
