It took a little bit to get into this, but by the end I felt like I was Eleanor, her loneliness, my loneliness, her despair, my despair, and then in the end her homecoming, mine. I wept. Homecoming feels like the right word somehow. Enjoyable and satisfying read.

If you suffer from depression and anxiety or want to understand someone who does, this honest book explains the true grit of it. There is the sadness and hope of his personal story, but also so many collected reasons to stay alive. This isn't self help but the reality of what mental health issues look like.

Suet624 One of my favorite books. 8mo

I particularly can relate to the themes of isolation and loneliness in this book. There is something alluring about solitude. I have said in the past that "Isolation is my vice." Even though it can be unhealthy, I crave alone time. Probably most bookworms know what I am talking about.

This story was beautifully crafted and touched me. It deserves the hype. I have to blame my book club because I never would've read this on my own!

Intense. Not sure how to feel about the ending or the main character right now. It took me down a depressing rabbit hole of reading about the Nanking Massacre which I heard The Poppy War was based on. I had difficulty reading those parts, and then to read that an atrocity happened similar in reality is disturbing. I love that a fantasy expanded my history and deepened my compassion. Perhaps that was the author's goal.

I wanted to read this to find out for myself what is the controversy about these books. They were forbidden books for me growing up. The book did deal with kidnapping, child abuse and some characters exhibit appalling disregard for the lives of children. That's disturbing to me, but it is part of why I got so pulled in. The cruelty to these children must be avenged! The story is rich and enchanting. I will be diving into the sequel.

olivia.ferz I'm reading this right now. Just a few more chapters. I didn't know these books were controversial. What was the reason? 11mo
tealwish @olivia.ferz I was told they were the atheist response to Narnia, but I don't get that from the first book at all. Maybe it's anti-organized religion? All I know is I enjoyed it! 11mo

My library books I picked up yesterday. I am feeling very indecisive about what to read, so I read the first 10 pages of each. Fahrenheit 451 is for my #LitsyAtoZ challenge. Why is it that as soon as a book is part of a challenge then I no longer want to read it??? It becomes something I SHOULD do, and I hate all the shoulds in life. Does anyone else have this problem? #libraryhaul

kristincatastrophic I don't feel that way about books but I do it with Netfilx. I've yelled "You can't tell me what to watch!" before, even when it's something I did what to watch. Slaughterhouse-Five though, love it! I won't tell you to read that first because then you won't but you should ? 13mo
Amiable Yes! I have tried to participate in three different book clubs, and had to eventually leave them because it was a struggle to muster the enthusiasm to read the books that were selected. Among other things, it is a love story between a mother and a daughter. Can they ever really understand each other?? I am so glad I don't have to wait as I am diving right into book 3.

"Let's start with the end of the world, why don't we?" If you like to judge books by first sentences instead of covers, this book starts just so. Part of the narrative is in 2nd person. For this reason I struggled to connect to the story at first, but I kept going. It pays off when it comes together. There is a reason for the 2nd person, and it's brilliant. I am almost done the second book!

I have learned from Thich Nhat Hanh's other books, but this was a disappointment. My approach to food is Intuitive Eating, and I thought this book was a Buddhist perspective on mindful eating. Sadly it focuses on weight loss and fat shaming. This monk is unaware of the dangers of eating disorders, the evil diet industry and that HEALTH IS NOT A SIZE. If you want mindfulness with a side of shame, read this. If not, read Intuitive Eating.

RamsFan1963 I'm reading The X-Files Origins: Agents of Chaos for my X slot. Plenty of X-Files books choose from, and most are well done, especially the older ones by Charles Grant and Kevin Anderson. 1y
tealwish @RamsFan1963 Ok, I will look for that one at the library! 1y
Soubhiville @tealwish I honestly don‘t care much for comics, so I just grab whichever X-men my library has, but I usually try to go for one with a lady hero in the lead. Robin Hobb is wonderful! I hope you‘ll enjoy it! Patrick Rothfuss is amazing too, you‘re going to have a terrific reading year! 1y
TheBookAddict It‘s part of a series, but you can follow the story without reading the other books. I just finished it for this year‘s LitsyAtoZ and don‘t know it was part of a series until I looked for it on Goodreads. It‘s a mystery, btw. 1y
tealwish @TheBookAddict I think I have heard of that author. Thanks! 1y
TheBookAddict @tealwish you‘re welcome. 🙂👍🏽 1y

I found a pre-made spreadsheet to track my books for next year. It will make pie charts for you!! And graphs! You could use it to find out how much money you spent on books in a year, but I don't know if I want to know that! The link is to a YouTube video explaining it and there is a free download as well. I just changed everything to 2019. #booknerd

2. Family time, relaxing time finishing a few books, and I will be watching booktube videos of people's favorite books of the year!

Bailedbailed

The only book I did not finish this year. A floating bookstore in Paris?! Such a charming setting for such a contrived plot! #worstreads

LiteraryinLititz I agree! I expected to LOVE this one and then bailed. 1y
Prairiegirl_reading Yikes! This is my book club‘s January pick. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
JennyM I bailed too. 1y

tealwish @Prairiegirl_reading There are reviews where people love it tho! It would be fun to discuss. 1y
tealwish @LiteraryinLititz and @JennyM Seems like something about it grates on certain people's nerves! 1y
LoverofLit Wasn't a fan of this one either! 1y

9999 Now I have to read this!!! 1y
9999 Do you think it's a better read or listen? Audible vs kindle.... 1y
IamIamIam HAHA, @kaye was so freaked out reading this!!! 1y
gradcat @JoScho Thanks for answering! 😊 1y
tealwish @kaye I kept reading on my lunch break at work, but I am surrounded by windows!! 1y
tealwish @sskk Audible might be more frightening, but I am a horror wimp!! 1y
tealwish @gradcat Yes, she is. Love her! 1y
tealwish @IamIamIam Like my heart was pounding at one point! Powerful fiction! 1y
IamIamIam @tealwish It really was suspenseful!! I read it late at night in bed and I recall not breathing at one point!!! 1y
Kaye @tealwish Better get them covered up. Blankets, sheets, cardboard. Old pizza boxes. Just DONT LOOK OUT THE WINDOWS 😱😱😱😱😱😱 1y
tealwish @kaye Yeah, I am sure my boss won't mind!! A book made me do it. haha 1y
Kaye I got my husband to read Birdbox, which is hilarious. He is a strict WW 2 NF READER. He liked Birdbox so much, he has talked 4 guya at work into reading it ( one , his boss) , and one of their wives. Now theyve all gone on to Stephen King. I do believe in miracles now. My husband is the closest thing to Amish ( without the church part) that I‘ve ever met. Reading has made him branch out. There‘s color in his cheeks ! 😀 1y
tealwish @kaye Wow, this book has changed lives! I love that story. That's awesome of him being willing to try something new! It's a reading miracle!! 😃😊 1y

Unpopular Opinion - This book rubbed me the wrong way. It's strange because I adore The Handmaid's Tale! This premise could have been handled so much better. Maybe I will put my spoilery reasons in a comment below...

tealwish Things I disliked - the second half felt rushed and garbled, and things happened with no explanation and written poorly. Why didn't they sedate Morgan a second time? Why was Jackie there and not in a camp? Why was Jean mauled by an ape? Why did every chapter end weird? I like a flawed character, but Jean is an unlikable main character for me. 1y
tealwish Also, the author seems to be writing from a place of man-hate and all-Christians-are-evil. I don't see this as feminist or a heroine when a man off screen saves the country, other men save Jean, she leans on her lover constantly and most annoyingly she keeps getting weak kneed and falling down! 1y
MelissaSue81 Hmm. I loved the premise of this book, but the turn it took in the second half was just.... odd. I agree about a lot of the stuff not making a lot of sense. I don‘t know if fully agree about your second point.. but Im not sure. I was mostly just confused by the end. (edited) 1y
tealwish @MelissaSue81 Yeah, the end was so all over the place! I had heard some great reviews so I started to wonder why I wasn't following it. Glad I wasn't the only one confused. 1y

Pickpick

Great audiobook!! This has something of the wonder of Harry Potter, but feels original! All ages will enjoy this if you want a fun, quirky, magical escape. I just started the sequel!
