Modern Lovers | Emma Straub
From the "New York Times" bestselling author of "The Vacationers," a smart, highly entertaining novel about a tight-knit group of friends from college their own kids now going to college and what it means to finally grow up well after adulthood has set in. Friends and former college bandmates Elizabeth and Andrew and Zoe have watched one another marry, buy real estate, and start businesses and families, all while trying to hold on to the identities of their youth. But nothing ages them like having to suddenly pass the torch (of sexuality, independence, and the ineffable alchemy of cool) to their own offspring. Back in the band's heyday, Elizabeth put on a snarl over her Midwestern smile, Andrew let his unwashed hair grow past his chin, and Zoe was the lesbian all the straight women wanted to sleep with. Now nearing fifty, they all live within shouting distance in the same neighborhood deep in gentrified Brooklyn, and the trappings of the adult world seem to have arrived with ease. But the summer that their children reach maturity (and start sleeping together), the fabric of the adult lives suddenly begins to unravel, and the secrets and revelations that are finally let loose about themselves, and about the famous fourth band member who soared and fell without them can never be reclaimed. Straub packs wisdom and insight and humor together in a satisfying book about neighbors and nosiness, ambition and pleasure, the excitement of youth, the shock of middle age, and the fact that our passions be they food, or friendship, or music never go away, they just evolve and grow along with us."

Loved this one! It‘s set in NYC which is always a big plus for me! There are intertwining plot lines of two family friends, with the parents and children all navigating relationships, love, and hurt together. This is my second Emma Straub book, and I really love her writing!

I picked this up for the Brooklyn setting prior to my trip to NYC. It was fine but not memorable, and I wasn‘t especially excited to pick it up and continue reading. Adult couples who went to college together now have teenaged children who embark on their own relationships. Just a bit meh.
LOVED Straub‘s most recent “This Time Tomorrow”, so I feel like she‘s evolving as an author and I‘ll look for her next work.

Reggie Ughh the husband in here. What a dirtbag. (edited) 2y

I‘ve been wanting to read this author for ages, and on paper this should have been my perfect book. Two families, three of whom were once in a cool college band together, now reach mid-life and are grappling teenagers, disillusionment and a feeling of life unravelling. I went in hoping for Fleishman is in Trouble vibes yet it just didn‘t grab me and I felt ambivalent about it. Not entirely sure why.

Since I enjoyed her latest during #CampLitsy, I‘ve decided to #reread Straub‘s other books starting with my favorite. These two couples in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn struggle with divorce and betrayal, but in a fairly lighthearted way.

Zoe and Jane own a popular restaurant but their marriage is in trouble. Andrew becomes enamored with a yoga studio while his wife thinks about their college band. The two couples‘ kids start a summer fling. Messy & fun!

KarenUK I love Emma Straub… messy and fun is the perfect description for most of her books! So sad to hear she lost her dad this week…. 2y
BarbaraBB This was a fun read indeed. I enjoyed their kids the most! 2y

Cinfhen Not my favorite straub but still a lighthearted read ♥️ 2y
Reggie I was totally not a fan of Andrew in this book. 2y
Megabooks @KarenUK I‘m sad about that as well, and I‘m so glad my three friends agree about her books (you + @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB ) being messy and fun! I‘m giving the only one I‘ve bailed on another shot now. But I effing hate goats! 2y
Megabooks @Reggie he was soooo self absorbed, and I would not be as cool as Elizabeth about him giving $150k to a cult! 2y
Reggie @Megabooks ORRRRR that he cheated on me while I thought we were happy in college with that spiteful girl. Ughhhhh Like you know it‘s bad when you catch your son having sex but the only thing that gets said is can ya‘ll spy on your dad for me. Thanks. Lololol 2y
KarenUK @megabooks 😂😂I love them!!!! 2y
Megabooks @KarenUK uuuggghhhh!! One time, when I went out on a goat call in school, it was breeding season, and I was trying to examine the adult goats for worms. As soon as I‘d get into the veterinarian squat™, the kids would come up and head butt my bottom and pee on me!!! Not fond memories!!! 2y
Megabooks @Reggie that too!!! 😱🤣 2y
BarbaraBB All Adults Here I didn‘t like at all either! 2y
Cinfhen Oh I forgot about this one - yeah, it wasn‘t great 🙄 2y

Elizabeth,Andrew (now married)and Zoe (married to Jane) were members of the band “Kitty‘s Mustache” while students at Oberlin. They have remained friends and watched each other get married, start families and businesses. They live in the same Brooklyn neighborhood. When their teenage children start sleeping together, their lives become complicated and secrets are revealed. The couples are trying to figure out love and what it takes to make it work

really enjoyed this. Yes, it's another novel about rich beautiful cool creative people living in a trendy expensive bit of a trendy expensive city, but if you're gonna do that then make it really extravagant & escapist like this. That said, the characters are strangely relatable and likeable - Ruby deffo would have bullied me if we went the same school but she's still great. Really interesting exploration of long term relationships/friendships.

CarolynM I've already got this stacked. It looks good🙂 4y

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a sucker for books were the characters have real life mundane and mellow-dramactic egocentric problems. I really loved this book. Two couples, who have been friends since college, are trying to sort out their relationships now that they are approaching turning fifty. In the mean time their teenage kids are making the same mistakes they did when they were young.

Despite its ridiculous ugly cover and though it is at times irritating prudish, it was an amusing read to kick-off the year!

It took me a few chapters to get into the story but once I found a good pace I was in it. I love books told from different POVs. That said, I also feel somewhat let down even though I enjoyed it. Some of the storylines seemed super predictable. The ending was different. Overall, I'm stuck somewhere between really liking it and it being a "so-so" read.

It looks like this book has had mixed reviews on both Litsy and Goodreads. It was a pick for me. I realize the characters were self centered and maybe not very sympathetic. However, I enjoyed the look at relationships from the young, reckless love to the complications that arise further down the road in relationships as people get older.
