American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World
American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World | David Baron
This epic story of a nineteenth-century celestial drama will enthrall readers, as the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse in 99 years plunges America into darkness. In the scorching summer of 1878, with the Gilded Age in its infancy, three tenacious and brilliant scientists raced to Wyoming and Colorado to observe a rare total solar eclipse. One sought to discover a new planet. Another an adventuresome female astronomerfought to prove that science was not anathema to femininity. And a young, megalomaniacal inventor, with the tabloid press fast on his heels, sought to test his scientific bona fides and light the world through his revelations. David Baron brings to three-dimensional life these three competitors James Craig Watson, Maria Mitchell, and Thomas Edisonand thrillingly re-creates the fierce jockeying of nineteenth-century American astronomy. With spellbinding accounts of train robberies and Indian skirmishes, the mythologized age of the last days of the Wild West comes alive as never before. A magnificent portrayal of Americas dawn as a scientific superpower, American Eclipse depicts a young nation that looked to the skies to reveal its towering ambition and expose its latent genius.

The picture was originally for the lilies of the valley, but I predict that I‘ll look back at it in a year and realize that I still haven‘t read any of the books in that damn pile.

Leftcoastzen 😀that is so relatable!📚📚📚📚 5y
ErikaB @Leftcoastzen I think almost everything that I‘ve read over at least the last 5 years or so has been borrowed, but my buying habits never slowed down. I was trying to change that this year by buying fewer and actually reading those that I already own, but I‘m failing spectacularly so far! 5y
Leftcoastzen You are preaching to the choir! You would think lockdown would make it difficult.I did curbside pickup w/ B&N and local indie , a couple items each mail order with Powells and Book Outlet.🤦‍♀️I have read some of my own #bookspin hosted by @TheAromaofBooks has improved my reading from my stash. 5y

I listened to this one in the weeks before, the day of, and after the eclipse of 2017. I think that experience probably elevated my review of this book since I loved celebrating the eclipse with my class.... I really enjoyed parts about Edison, the science discoveries in the 1800s, women in science and the description of totality but other parts of the book were a bit slow. This much is for certain: I am chasing the next solar eclipse in 2024.

#TBRtemptation post 10! Released this Summer. With this week's major astronomical event, this is an apropos book for today. In the Summer of 1878, 3 scientists went to Wyoming & Colorado to observe a total solar eclipse. One, James Watson, sought to discover a new planet. One, Maria Mitchell, wanted to prove that science and femininity worked together. One, Thomas Edison, wanted to solidify his credentials. Adventurous! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎

Amazing total #eclipse out on the lake today. Camera doesn't capture the corona and it didn't get as dark as I expected. But, we did see it, along with a planet and a 360 degree sunsetset-like horizon. #litsycooks Taco bar for #lunch. Margaritas in pineapple shells for our #drink. What a day! 😎

Redwritinghood Sounds wonderful! 7y

Awesome Eclipse Day! It was rainy and cloudy but cleared up just in time. We were outside with the students for about 30 minutes and seeing the totality was amazing!

As for this audiobook about the 1878 eclipse, I'm finding parts interesting, but I'm not super impressed with the narrator or the story. Maybe the description of the day of the eclipse will redeem it when I get there.

#nonfiction #audiobook

Peddler410 It is because of this book that I had glasses to view the eclipse today. I got them at ALA. 7y
Daisey @Peddler410 Have you had a chance to read it? If so, what did you think? 7y

It's not going to be a total eclipse here, but almost. So cool! (That's younger son ☝️) 😎🌖🌗🌘🌒🌓🌔

robinb Outside now...a little cooler....so cool to see the progression! ❤️ 7y
ValerieAndBooks @robinb yes, such fun!! I can now understand why people would want to travel to 100% totality areas. We got about 80%. 7y

Heading to Nebraska for the eclipse with @OutlandishLit 🙌 Anyone else road tripping to see it?? #eclipse

ErinC Where in NE? I live in Omaha but work in Iowa tomorrow. :(. It might be cloudy here anyway. Hopefully the clouds stay away and you get a great view! 7y
LauraBrook Wish I was tripping to see it! It'll be about 85% where I live which is pretty good. Wish I would've planned better to trip and see the full thing! Enjoy! 7y
josie281 It's 90% here and I had planned on heading south for 100% but life happened 7y

alisiakae We live on the edge of the path of totality, so we drove from Charlotte to Greenville to visit friends and be in the path of full totality. 😃 (edited) 7y
Gezemice We drove 4 hours to Missouri and it was totally worth it! 7y
WordWaller @ErinC we drove through Lincoln and watched it off the side of the highway! We had to race a mile at the last second so it wouldn't be behind the clouds! Sooooo worth it 7y
ErinC @WordWaller I'm glad you were able to see it without the clouds! I wasn't in the totality path but it was still cool at 99%! Hopefully, your drive out wasn't too bad. I heard traffic was atrocious. 7y

i REALLY wanted to be all about this one, since the eclipse is cutting through a HUGE swath of nebraska, but it reminded me too much of short historical textbooks from undergrad. wasn't for me, but a good read for folks who like a detailed historical account! our hold list for this guy aint short, so i'm passing it on to someone who might love it better #eclipse #manoverboard
