Decided I needed some light and fun reading over Christmas, so decided to do a reread on a favourite childhood series.

In this first Nancy Drew book, the teenage super-sleuth rescues an endangered child, changes a flat tire, nurses an elderly invalid, expertly drives both cars and boats, saves several needy people from financial ruin, performs a small engine repair, foils the plans of hardened criminals, and manages to negotiate a 50% discount on a stunning new dress! She‘s smart, she‘s pretty, she‘s brave, and her manners are impeccable. What‘s not to love?

SamAnne Oh it‘s been so long since I read Nancy Drew! 3y
HeatherBookNerd @SamAnne this is my first Nancy Drew! I didn‘t read them when I was a kid. 3y

I love older kids literature but have had little luck getting my daughter interested. I convinced her to take a break from Percy Jackson for Nancy Drew and she is really enjoying it, so much she read me a chapter tonight! This is a fun reread.

Come-read-with-me This brings back happy memories! 3y

Reading is usually my happy place, but I have been at a reading stand still since March. It‘s like my brain couldn‘t deal Covid19, all the change that came with Covid-19 and read a book. So in an attempt to temp my brain back into reading mode I read something nostalgic from childhood. Unfortunately, ol‘ Nancy does not hold up.

keys_on_fire I have felt the same way in this mess. I‘m just trying to give myself some grace and if I don‘t like something right now, I‘ll just try it later! Good luck with finding the right thing for you! 4y

My childhood role model 😊

ravenlee Based on my current reread of the series with my kiddo - Nancy would probably have a car accident, leap to some conclusions that turn out right (against all odds), and enjoy some girl time with George and Bess along the way. 😆 4y
bookandbedandtea @ravenlee All after being offered a free trip to some fabulous location where she can dance the night away with the adorable Ned Nickerson while "gathering clues!" 4y

*Considering I grew up on Nancy Drew, is it any wonder that I still love a good mystery? Well, the answer to that question is hardly a *ahem* mystery. ♥️

Andrew65 😍 For me in the UK I was brought up on the Famous Five and Secret Seven by Enid Blyton. Been a mystery and Suspense fan ever since! (edited) 4y

gradcat @Andrew65 I, too, read Enid Blyton! I agree with you...they get in your blood & brain and never leave! From there it was just a short time before Agatha Christie, then P. D. James, etc, etc, ad infinitum! 4y
Linsy Love that collection! 💛 4y
gradcat @Linsy I know, right? So great & very nostalgic! 4y
Crazeedi All my favorite Nancy's! My daughter has a few of mine 4y
gradcat @Crazeedi I know you don‘t watch tv, but there‘s a Nancy Drew show on the CW network. I watched the first one...boy, it‘s not your mama‘s Nancy Drew anymore!! 😂😂 4y
Crazeedi @gradcat I should maybe look for it! Thanks!! 4y
gradcat @Crazeedi You may not recognize her. She‘s not like the Nancy Drew that you & I read. One of the first scenes has her climbing out of her boyfriend‘s bed...this is a racier Nancy—not that there‘s anything wrong with that! 😂 She‘s just not like the Nancy Drew that I read. 4y
Crazeedi @gradcat oh my maybe I dont want to watch it, #notmynancy 4y

For years, I‘ve told myself I would read all 56 Nancy Drew mysteries... there are a few I‘ve never read. The simple sentences really make me want to laugh. But, I read about a third of the book in no time at all and quite enjoyed myself.

Charityann I want to read through them all in order too. I read most of them as kid, but it‘s fun to go back and see how they hold up as a grown-up. 😊Did you ever read the Nancy Drew files? 4y
Purplerosiepage @Charityann No, I think I tried, but never got into them. 4y

Just finished rereading my first Nancy Drew book! A fun quick read, but I couldn‘t help but think how crazy this girl was! Sneaking into a barn with a bunch of ruffians just nearby?! No way. ⭐️⭐️⭐️❤️

Crazeedi Awesome! Now I need to reread these stories, they were my favorite as a young girl 5y
Llanphear @Crazeedi mine too! They‘re a really fun, fast reread! Thanks again for the set❤️ 5y

I was feeling a little nostalgic, so I stopped by the library and picked up a few copies of Nancy Drew. I read book one yesterday. On the menu today - Book two, The Hidden Staircase.

Slajaunie I never read them but I probably would have if I had tried. 5y
LikelyLibrarian @Slajaunie They‘re great! For our generation, Nancy Drew was one of the only female literary characters we could look up to. 5y

This is my first Nancy Drew book ever!! And I have to say that 13 year old me, would have relished the maturity and action of this book, 32 year old me finds Nancy Drew‘s freakishly coincidental happenstances a bit suspicious. Lol. It was a cute quick read. I did find myself questioning a lot of things, but I had to remember that this wasn‘t written for me. Having now read one of her books, I can say my childhood was not lacking.

#ReadingResolutions #clocks

Books from my stacks with clocks in their titles and/or on their covers. I had to include both Time After Time covers--the movie tie-in as the movie is a favorite & the one with a clock on it. A Clockwork Orange is a long ago bail--I just couldn't get into it. Red Clocks is a more recent bail--more bad timing on my part than issues with it. I checked out the library audiobook last month but couldn't focus on it.🕰

rubyslippersreads ❤️❤️❤️ Time After Time—movie and book. 😊 6y

📖 I remember loving The Borrowers when my mother read it to me.
👖 I learned the word “khaki” from reading NancyDrew. I used to pronounce it “ka-ha-ki” in my head.
⏰ I‘ll read anytime.
☕️ I‘m generally an indoor girl, but I‘d love to get outside more.

One of my favorite photos I‘ve ever taken of my oldest childhood favorite books. The middle one is the oldest one I own (1930‘s) and also an original text. The watches were my grandfather‘s ❤️

Chrissyreadit I‘m still angry at myself for giving away my Nancy Drew Books. 6y

Jess_Read_This @kindergartenkat A great edition!! ❤️ 6y
Jess_Read_This @bookandbedandtea That is so neat you have the entire set! I‘m piecing together my yellow matte set and the original text ones. I only had a few from childhood and the rest were library ones bc my parents told me I read too fast and they couldn‘t afford my habit. It was cheaper to drive me to the library.. 😂 6y
bookandbedandtea @Jess_Read_This My grandparents bought them for me. Over several years, unfortunately, but I never seemed to lack for reading matter in between. My parents both like to read so they didn't mind buying books for me. I'm so glad I kept this set. I only kept a few other of my childhood books; wish I had known how much I'd still value them now! 6y

❤️I found a Nancy Drew collector's dream in the independent bookseller, Books on Bay.... this is just a small sampling of what I ogled like a fool over. The owner gave me such an education on collecting and showed me a few rarities that she had behind the desk. I completely got to booknerd out this afternoon.

🔎My next Holy Grail is the edition with Ned smoking in an illustration! 🚬

Leftcoastzen And isn't fun learning more about rare books? 7y
mabell Which title/edition is that illustration in? 7y
wanderlustforwords It's and Indie used? Any Fitz? 7y
Jess_Read_This @rubyslippersreads @RestlessFickleBookSlut @LauraBrook @Leftcoastzen I'm still pinching myself over what I saw today. If you are interested, there is a Facebook group devoted to fans of the series and collecting. It's called "Nancy Drew Book Fans" the owner recommends this group if you want to meet other collectors. 7y
Jess_Read_This @mabell The lineup of books on the shelf? These are the blue woven hardbacks with their actual dust jackets intact. 7y
Jess_Read_This @wanderlustforwords You know I looked! No Fitz's.... but I got a sweet Nancy Drew with the loveliest writing on the inside by the former owner when she bought it (August 1, 1960 with her mom and brother) and a listing of the Nancy Drew books she does own. I was completely charmed. 7y
mabell Sorry I wasn't clear - I meant your holy grail 😀 7y
Pamwurtzler Wow! Those are amazing! 7y
batsy Ned, smoking? GASP. This row of books is making me swoon 😍 7y
elkeOriginal Ugh, this photo is amazing! SO many copies! Gorgeous. #ALLthebooks 7y
Jess_Read_This @mabell It's The Secret of the Wooden Lady- in editions 1-3 (one collector said through 4 but I was also told 3) the illustration shows Ned appearing to hold a cigarette. Some collectors say it's just the wood grain of the paneling; others maintain it's an unlit cigarette. Either way, pretty interesting! 7y
Jess_Read_This @batsy He's technically holding a cigarette.. I read one collector say its just the wood grain on the wall. But many maintain it's an unlit cigarette he has in his hand. I've been thrown into a fascinating world of collecting. And realizing I'm too poor to be a super collector... 😂 7y
Jess_Read_This @Pamwurtzler I just love looking at them all. I might go back one to just gape at their prettiness. 7y
Jess_Read_This @elkeo I'm still staring at the pics. I joined the Nancy Drew Book Fans group on FB, per the seller's recommendation. What an education and the group is so nice. Collectors of all levels are on it. 7y

So I was a big fan of Alice détective as a kid and discovered since then that she is actually Nancy drew in disguise! Apparently the translation changes a lot of things... Even names. So I need to read them in English... But right now reading in French because I need a author name in q for #litsyatoz!
