This book is supposedly beloved, AR raised the bar for gothic romance when she wrote this tale about Emily, who is orphaned, imprisoned, separated from the man she loves etc….
What actually happens is crying. So much crying, weeping, sobbing. And fainting. There are no mysteries . I am grateful for #hashtagbrigade for supporting and entertaining me during this read 🤣😘

dabbe I am now way behind. I also count the pages before I start, and the one that had 30+ chapters just made me go 😳, and that's where I'm at. I don't read the poems, and now I'm skipping the PAGES UPON PAGES UPON PAGES of descriptions of mountains, blah blah, mountains, blah blah, #verdantverdure blah blah, #sublime blah blah ... Emily finally arrives at Udolpho like 250 pages in? 😴 2mo

mcctrish @dabbe I don‘t think anyone reads the poems, openers, ballads or whatever they are called😆 if they are supposed to tie in with the non-stop crying I sure as hell can‘t see it. The long chapters really do crush one‘s soul and its so easy to get behind. Just skip ahead - you have missed crying, fainting, the count was stabbed, macaroni is double dealing everyone, the aunt is a bitch, the trees are green, the castle is haunted. 2mo

dabbe I also have a question: with all the descriptions about nature (verdant verdure, of course), how come Radcliffe never describes Emily's face and eyes being puffy from all that wailing? 🤔😂🤩 2mo

dabbe @AllDebooks They remind me (in a way) of the opening travel scene with Harker going to Transylvania to meet Dracula. Only in that book it's the Carpathian mountains; here it's the Pyrenees. 2mo
