The Mysteries of Udolpho | Anne Radcliffe
post image
AnnCrystal 👋😍👍💝💝💝. (edited) 4d
mcctrish This is exactly what I pictured 🤣🤣 considering the really gorgeous descriptions of their natural paradise I think fireflies or lightening bugs would be nicer than glow worms 🤔 Emily‘s uncle and aunt sound like a piece of work 4d
See All 19 Comments
dabbe @mcctrish I see bad things ahead with this aunt and uncle. He's already planning on redoing their cozy little home! And boasting about the changes to Emily's dad! #wtf 😳 4d
mcctrish @dabbe the tree clearing concerns me maybe he will die too (edited) 4d
TheAromaofBooks I totally had that glowworm!! 😂 4d
Bookwormjillk Yup I had one! 4d
TheBookHippie My daughter had one! 4d
ElizaMarie OMG #ThatUncle I can't believe he is talking about clearing out the trees! I had a glowworm! It was ridiculous! Why did we have such weird toys as kids!? 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Definitely a creeper! He stole her mom‘s necklace! Funny how this book starts with all these long, lingering descriptions but there‘s still a ton of action packed into the first chapter. 4d
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly right? Soooooo much happened! The words on my pages are really small, that chapter felt so long! 4d
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie it was giving me sense and sensibility vibes, leave the trees alone! 4d
CatLass007 Dang! I forgot we were starting this today. But it‘s not too late. What years was the Glow Worm in existence as a toy? Because I don‘t even remember a commercial for it. 4d
jewright I used my glow worm to read under my blankets when I was supposed to be sleeping when I was a kid. 3d
Cupcake12 I had one and loved it so much especially when reading at night 3d
AnishaInkspill 😂 💛 💛 3d
julieclair That aunt and uncle were too awful to be believed. So rude, self-centered and insensitive. And the mom dies already? And the creeper guy? We are totally set up for lots of action ahead. 2d
Bklover @CatLass007 My daughter was born in 1986 and she had a pink glow worm. 2d
CatLass007 @Bklover No, definitely not my generation. I graduated from college in 1985.😂 2d

AnnR That was a weird chapter. 14mo
peanutnine I hate that Adela changed her mind back so quickly and didn't even discuss her misgivings with Ronny before jumping into their engagement 14mo
See All 12 Comments
willaful @peanutnine as I read it, she didn't actually mean to become engaged, just to take back her definite no, but it got away from her.

Impulsivity seems to be a common point amongst many of the main characters.
(edited) 14mo
peanutnine @willaful that's true. She did seem a bit regretful about it at least. Yes impulsivity is a huge theme already 14mo
dabbe @peanutnine That brings up the #IdiomInsight from a couple days ago: “Haste makes waste.“ 🤩 14mo
dabbe I can't help but see such a parallel between Adela&Ronny and Lucy&Cecil. Not the most compatible of couples, and Ronny/Cecil are revolting. 14mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe omg yes!! 14mo
peanutnine @dabbe 💯 perfect comparison! 14mo
mcctrish How did this change happen?! #adelawhatsreyoudoing ? #buffalovshyena 🤔 Ronnie being bitchy about Aziz missing a collar pin 😡 14mo
Bklover @dabbe I do believe you are right!! They are both asses! 14mo
Bookwormjillk @dabbe good one! 14mo

Ok #pemberlittens what should the #hashtagbrigade read next? Let‘s come up with some ideas and then we will vote in the next few days. It could be another #austenadjacent book or a #chunksterfromhell #youdecide

Bookwormjillk I‘m still intrigued by 2y
Bookwormjillk Or you know, whatever you all want. I can survive anything as long as it‘s limited to a chapter a day 🤣 2y
See All 43 Comments
TheBookHippie #chunksterfromhell 🤣💯😅👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 2y
mcctrish @TheBookHippie are we reading Lady Chatterly‘s lover with #sundaybuddyread ? 2y
mcctrish I‘m not sure what all you‘ve read so far so I will just watch the suggestions roll in 2y
TheBookHippie @mcctrish yes !!!! AUGUST! 2y
ravenlee No more Bronte! 2y
BarkingMadRead @ravenlee I feel that in my soul! 2y
Librarybelle I‘m up for whatever! 2y
IndoorDame @ravenlee definitely need a break from those ladies 🤣 2y
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie ooh, I hadn‘t realized. Fun! I haven‘t read that in 20 yrs (edited) 2y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame came up in a book last year and we decided to read it. I read it 37 years ago 👀😅 2y
IndoorDame @TheBookHippie I‘m super impressed you remember the exact number! 2y
Morr_Books Since I am new to this, have y'all read any Elizabeth Gaskell? 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books the #pemberlittens read one last year at some point, I think? North and South, I believe! 2y
Morr_Books @BarkingMadRead So sorry to have missed that one! 2y
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books there‘s always Cranford 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead I loved Excellent women more books by that author is okay! 2y
BarkingMadRead @TheBookHippie we read that one last year as well! I should keep a list! 2y
TheBookHippie @IndoorDame 🤣 math . I took detention for reading it senior year. Only whores read DH Lawrence 👀 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead I read it with you but are there more by her we can read? 2y
TheBookHippie @BarkingMadRead oooo they look good! But I‘ll read anything 🤣 #hashtags 2y
eeclayton @Bookwormjillk I'd be interested in Tess too, but I'm also open to whatever #hashtagbrigadeforever 2y
TheAromaofBooks I looked up a few lists of suggestions for what to read after Austen! 😂 A Glass of Blessings was on the list, along with The Pursuit of Love by Nancy Mitford, The Gentleman's Daughter by Amanda Vickery, and Jane Austen's Letters edited by Deirdre Le Faye. And this list has 50 suggestions! https://www.silverpetticoatreview.com/50-books-love-jane-austen/ It's a rather dangerous list for my TBR, I must admit! 2y
IndoorDame The Pym ones look great and I haven‘t read her yet, so I‘m leaning towards that, but I did really enjoy North and South so Cranford would get a yes from me too 2y
TheAromaofBooks This one sounds particularly intriguing - originally published in 1914, it seems like it must be one of the earliest forms of fanfiction! 2y
AllDebooks If you fancy a change from Victorian ladies, I suggest E.M. Forster. He's often compared to Austen and he was a complete Janeite https://thejaneaustenproject.com/2010/07/28/illicit-reading/ 2y
Morr_Books I second E.M. Forster - like A Room with a View or A Passage to India. 2y
BarkingMadRead So many great suggestions! I have 5 on our list so far! 2y
Morr_Books @TheAromaofBooks I never heard of this one, but it is on my TBR now. 😀 2y
DebinHawaii @TheAromaofBooks I think we mentioned reading Old Friends and New Fancies a while back & it still intrigues me. It would get my vote. 2y
Ruthiella @ravenlee @IndoorDame No more Brontë? ? I think I‘ve reached saturation point too. @BarkingMadRead I vote for Hardy because I‘ve never read anything from him and feel like I should. Or Vanity Fair by Thackary. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Morr_Books @DebinHawaii - It definitely went on my TBR!! 2y
willaful I could go for Gaskell or Forster. Never read Cranford or A Passage to India. (Or did I read Cranford? Hmm...) 2y
Bklover I missed Agnes (been painting my house) so I shouldn‘t vote this time, but I do love a good #hashtagbrigade chunkster! 2y
StayCurious So many awesome suggestions! Thanks to everyone for being involved! 2y
Aimeesue I‘m a #Pymphomaniac, so . . 2y
ravenlee I‘ve read both Tess and Vanity Fair in the past year, so I‘d be out for either of those (or Cranford for the same reason). I will say VF might be a tough one so close behind Middlemarch, as it‘s another long one with long stretches of nothing happening. I personally liked Tess more, though it was hard because of the subject matter. 2y

Chapter 4: Celia (pictured) tells Dodo what everyone else has known all along! #chettamlovesdodolovescasaubon #dodoisunthrilled #unclebrookehasgoodnews #orisitbadnews #youdecide #pemberlittens

eeclayton I had Emma vibes about this part. The way Dodo was so completely oblivious about Chettam's intention and told herself he was just being nice to his future sister-in-law, reminded me how Emma thought all of Mr Elton's attentions were signs of his being madly in love with her friend 😁 2y
See All 15 Comments
Bklover Celia has way more patience than I do. I am happy though, that Dodo finally knows what‘s going on. Oh, and I googled John Locke and oh my, I do see Celia‘s point. I found myself wanting to keep reading after this chapter! 2y
peanutnine @eeclayton yes! Such an Emma mistake! 2y
CoffeeNBooks Even Uncle Brooke seems confused as to why Dorothea prefers Casaubon. 😆 And talk about mixed signals- Chettam thought Dorothea's interest in the building plans equalled interest in him, even though Dorothea has been rude to him in the past. Is he that bad at reading the room?! 😳 2y
melissajayne Is there a spreadsheet for the readalong? I just need to know if there are going to be chapters that we are going to be doubling on. 2y
Bookwormjillk @melissajayne I think we just keep reading a chapter a day until we‘re done 2y
Bookwormjillk Today‘s chapter was kind of funny. Poor Uncle B is confused about women. 2y
melissajayne @Bookwormjillk Ok; sounds good 😊 2y
KristiAhlers I love how Uncle Brooke was so gobsmacked when Dorothea doubled down on wanting Casaubon. I could totally picture his face with at WTH expression 🤣 2y
BarkingMadRead @CoffeeNBooks so clueless lol @melissajayne a chapter a day. Embrace the short ones 🤣 2y
ravenlee @CoffeeNBooks like so many privileged guys, he just can‘t fathom that anybody he‘s interested in won‘t just fall at his feet. 2y
TheBookHippie @ravenlee 🤣😵‍💫😝 2y

Second attempt at one of these .... 🤗

If you have Instagram, head over to #audible. On their story choose your option for today and take a screenshot. Add it to the photo above and drop in a tag @DannyHattan and #youdecide.

Tag a bunch of littens to get it going 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

LibrarianRyan I tried. I couldn‘t get a screen shot in time. I said head South. I used Josh‘s Instagram as they closed mine years ago after I left my last library. (edited) 6y
