#EarlyBird

Hey, Ugly Sweaters! (from now on, I'll use #USS 🤣)
Time to start earning some #EarlyBird points! See pic above. You'll be keeping track of your own points and will share them with me twice (one on 12/15 and the other at the end). Please tag me with your posts (I love to see what you're doing) and include the team, too, if you want! That's what makes this fun! 🎄🎄🎄

AnnR Beyond Sherlock Holmes and The Christmas Demon, I'm looking forward to revisiting A Christmas Carol on audio (still deciding which version/narrator). Although not part of the question, I'm looking forward to watching Lucy Worsley's 12 Days of Tudor Christmas, available via the PBS app. 😁🎄 4mo
dabbe @AnnR I consider a “view“ the same as a “read“ the same as “audio“. All are literary! Thanks for sharing. 🎄❤️🎄 4mo
sebrittainclark I'm most excited to read the sequel to A Very Merry Meet Cute - 4mo

dabbe @sebrittainclark I've read such good things about “Cute“; now I have two on the TBR! Thanks for sharing! 🎄❤️🎄 4mo
LeeRHarry I‘m still waiting on my copy of Iron Flame in mid December. 😊 4mo
Allylu @sebrittainclark I‘m adding those two to my TBR, too! I‘m also looking forward to reading “The Christmas Clash” by Suzanne Park and Nick & Noel‘s Christmas Playlist by Cody Hall. I also have several Christmas books on top of my wardrobe from last year! 🥳💕🎄🎶📚🤶🎅🏻❄️ 4mo
ShananigansReads My most anticipated read is tagged but my library hold came in early than expected and I just couldn‘t wait. So I‘ve already read (and loved) it. 🤦🏾‍♀️ 4mo
NikkiM5 Now that my list is finalized, I am most looking forward to reading “Krampus” 4mo
dabbe A reminder to myself and to #USS, if you haven't commented on your most anticipated read for #WinterGames, make sure you comment below BEFORE 12/1 for 10 #EarlyBird points! Also make sure you commented on 5 other people's posts (welcoming @Q84 counts!) for 15 #EarlyBird points, and finally, post a pic of your TBR's for a whopping 25 points! #whew 🎄

After 1,003 words, I can't go anymore. Brains and eyes are fried. I typed them on a spreadsheet to make sure I had zero duplicates. If you want to see 'em all, here's the link:

Clwojick KILLING IT! 🙌🏻🎉🔪 5mo
dabbe @AmandaBlaze I used one, too, especially when trying to come up with all variations of a word. No one said we couldn't. 🤷‍♀️ If people can get the same amount of points for reading a short story as for a full-blown novel, well ... it's all for fun! 🤩🤩🤩 5mo

A Passage to India | E. M. Forster
post image
willaful This was a complicated chapter. Adela is so confused and suggestible -- perhaps normal after being traumatized like this. There's nothing that explains why she ever thought it was Aziz to begin with. She's definitely a very unreliable witness. That's probably not going to help poor Aziz though. :-( 6mo
Bklover Loved todays hashtags! You‘re right- Mrs. Moore is definitely crabby. @willaful Yes- no one has said “what makes you think it was Aziz in the first place?”!! 6mo
See All 13 Comments
Bookwormjillk Did she ever accuse Aziz or did Ronny just assume? What‘s up with Mrs. Moore? Is she still mad about the cave?? 6mo
BarkingMadRead @willaful so true! And they never really say why she thought it was him or who she told! I hope they do! @Bookwormjillk as far as I know, we don‘t know who she told or what she said! I hope that info comes out! 6mo
jenniferw88 I think we're meant to assume that she told Miss Derek at the car, and Miss Derek drives her straight to the station. 6mo
Morr_Books @jenniferw88 I agree. I also got the impression from this chapter that Adela thought it was Dr Aziz because she assumed he followed her into the cave, so it had to be him. 6mo
jenniferw88 @Bookwormjillk Mrs Moore has lost her faith in religion and God and this is draining her emotions. 6mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk Ever since Mrs. Moore experienced the echo, she seems to have adopted an almost existential “why care?“ kind of way of living. 6mo
Morr_Books At this point, I feel that Mrs. Moore is partly crabby, because she thinks all this is ridiculous. I'm frustrated because it seems she believes in Dr Aziz's innocence but won't speak won't go public....maybe cuz everyone views her as a crabby old woman...? 6mo
jenniferw88 @dabbe exactly! 6mo
AnnR This was a difficult chapter to read. Not in the literary sense but on an emotional level. 6mo
Bklover @dabbe Yes- well said! 6mo

dabbe I think Miss Crawley might be dead: “We shall see thee no more. Let us hope that Lady Jane supported her kindly, and led her with gentle hand out of the busy struggle of Vanity Fair.“ Anyone else think this? If so, Pitt and Jane get all the money! 😱

Bookwormjillk Today I figured out I was a chapter behind. It all makes much more sense now 🤦‍♀️ 7mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk oh no!! 🤣🤣 7mo
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk that was me a few days ago 🤣🤣 the 2 chapters threw me once ( I got interrupted after finishing one and then forgot I‘d only read one 🤦🏻‍♀️) @dabbe I actually felt a bit bad for Miss Crawley getting her comeuppance from Lady Snowden #theresalwaysabiggerbullyinvanityfair 7mo
Bookwormjillk @mcctrish that‘s what happened to me too 7mo

willaful A shame Dobbin doesn't have more #emotionalintelligence or he might not have pushed the marriage so fast. 🙄 8mo

BarkingMadRead @willaful he was so eager to make her happy, he didn‘t realize it probably wouldn‘t in the long run 8mo
willaful But also really eager to get it over with so he didn't have to deal with “what ifs“ and feel disloyal. I think Thackery is such an excellent psychologist! 8mo
mcctrish This is the first time I‘ve liked George‘s sisters 8mo
dabbe Mr. Osborne says this: “I ain‘t particular about a shade or so of tawny“ about Ms. Swartz. Yowza! He doesn't mind if she's not completely white because she has money, but he thinks Amelia is a piece of dirt now that her father's poor? What a jackass! 🫏

willaful I think it's interesting how the author assumes readers all already know the backstory of each of the characters.

Also, yet another who wants to rehabilitate Mary Crawford! I remember reading a “sequel“ -- Joan Aiken, maybe -- which was clearly of the mind that Mary got #arawdeal and should've been the real heroine. Never mind the whole #beingafortunehunter thing.
10mo
See All 19 Comments
Ruthiella @willaful I loved Mary Crawford and was annoyed by Fanny, but I need to re-read 10mo
willaful @Ruthiella Fanny is definitely all wet, but Mary pretty much #dugherowngrave IIRC. I don't mind her growing from the experience and having a HEA though! (edited) 10mo
Cuilin So many characters. There was a moment where a Nancy showed up and I was like where did you come from? 10mo
ravenlee @Cuilin that threw me for a minute too, and I had to rack my brain to remember Nancy is a nickname for Anne (which I should remember, as an Anne) 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Cuilin @ravenlee yeah, it took me a minute to see that Nancy is Anne #annenotnancy #dontconfuseme #toomanypeople 10mo
TheAromaofBooks Sooo many characters all at once and @willaful is right about just being expected to remember them!!! I was never a Mary fan and read another sequel where she died, so I was also a little like, “wait, she's not dead??“ 😂 But poor Brandon! I love that guy, and everyone always wants to kill him off! #Brandon4lyfe 10mo
ravenlee Exactly! @TheAromaofBooks Why is Col Brandon always the first to get knocked off? He‘s one of the best Austen characters. And I feel more sympathetic to him as I find myself on the wrong side of 35 (okay, 40) - he‘s supposed to be sooo old and he‘s not even middle aged?! 10mo
TheAromaofBooks @ravenlee - Right?? Everyone so down on him because he wears flannel! 😂 10mo
dabbe @ravenlee I can't ever picture Col. Brandon again without thinking or seeing Alan Rickman, who is also gone. 💔

10mo
dabbe @willaful Agreed! It's been a while since I've read some of Austen's books, and boy am I having to go back and research to remember the gist of each person from the Austen novels. 😅 #whew 10mo
BarkingMadRead @dabbe same! I mostly have the gist but I definitely needed a bit of a refresher 10mo
willaful Brandon got knocked off?! I missed that.

Now I want to read an AU where Marianne dies and Brandon and Mary Crawford get married. #justkidding #donthateme
10mo
BarkingMadRead @willaful I hate that Brandon died! Whyyyy does everyone kill him off?!? 10mo
willaful Oh, I did remember wrong. It wasn't fortunate hunting, it was Mary's moral failings in Edmund's eyes. 10mo
Morr_Books @BarkingMadRead Can you add me? I'd love to join the discussion. 10mo
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books absolutely! 10mo

Bklover Fred is a mess. I keep trying to like him for Mary‘s sake, but it‘s hard. And I agree- Fred would lose any money given to him. Always with good intentions. 🙄. Having said that, I do hope that he will get to work for Caleb. (edited) 14mo
peanutnine @Bklover I agree, he's got great intentions but poor execution 🤦🏼‍♀️ hopefully Caleb can teach him how to earn an honest living 14mo
CoffeeNBooks I hope Fred can work for Caleb and learn to become more responsible! 14mo

Pickpick

I finally finished this 33 hour listen #whew. I wouldn‘t recommend this book to anyone and I‘m not quite sure if it‘s the “great American gay novel.” I was tired of Jude always apologizing. But it‘s well written, and the story is affecting, and the characters are fleshed out (although their circumstances are unrealistic). 4/5 would not read again

RaimeyGallant That's a long one. I have a 30+ one in my library holds that I keep putting off. 5y
nikirtehsuxlol @RaimeyGallant they only other 30+ hour one I‘ve listened to was a Kingkiller Chronicle. Was not a fan of that genre so it was a huge chore! What is your 30 hour listen?! 5y
RaimeyGallant It's on my other older phone, so I can't remember at the moment! 5y
