The first volume of John Jakess acclaimed and sweeping saga about a friendship threatened by the divisions of the Civil War In the years leading up to the Civil War, one enduring friendship embodies the tensions of a nation. Orry Main from South Carolina and George Hazard from Pennsylvania forge a lasting bond while training at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Together they fight in the Mexican-American War, but their closeness is tested as their regional politics diverge. As the first rounds are fired at Fort Sumter, Orry and George find themselves on different sides of the coming struggle. In John Jakess unmatched style, North and South launches a trilogy that captures the fierce passions of a country at the precipice of disaster. This ebook features an illustrated biography of John Jakes including rare images from the authors personal collection.

Finally finished! Took me three weeks to finish! Really enjoyed this one. A detail-heavy family saga featuring two families on opposing sides before the Southern secession. I‘m always fascinated at the ways people justified their loyalties. Each character falls at a totally different place on the anti-slavery/pro-slavery line. Astounding to me how the issues in this story felt like today‘s news. Started slow but by the end, I couldn‘t put it down.

I‘m a little bit over halfway thru and it had a slower start than I anticipated. It has finally picked up (duel! train wreck!) and I‘m enjoying it. I really like George and Orry and their deep friendship.

Giving my books to mom so she can finish the trilogy (she unknowingly read book 3 first). I only read book 1 back in high school. I remember really liking it. I must have bought book 2 but never got around to it. This trilogy will have to wait for me to read it until I‘m retired! Ha!

Scochrane26 I remember watching the show when I was younger. I bought at least the first book but never read it. 5y
Butterfinger The music just popped in my head. 5y
JackOBotts Never read these, but I really enjoyed his Kent Family Chronicles. The first in the series is 5y
ljuliel I remember the miniseries about it. I have all 3 books but haven‘t read them yet. I‘ve read all the his Kent Family Chronicles series , back about 35 years ago 😱. Gosh , I‘m getting old. That‘s really neat that you and your mom share books like that. (edited) 5y

So, I finally finished the book. It feels like it‘s been forever, but according to goodreads it‘s only been eight days. I loved it, as I knew I would. I‘m mildly disappointed that the ‘evil‘ characters are both often described as fat, and that the only woman with (much) agency over herself is again, cast as a villain. But, when you think about that it was written in the eighties, about the 1800‘s I‘m neither shocked or put off by it. ⬇️

Jabberwocky The book is packed with characters you could reach out and touch, and the history and politics feels impeccably researched and never seems onerous. I watched the made for TV series long ago and read this book around the same time, but never delved further into the trilogy. I with definitely be reading Love and War soon, but need a break for now. #historicalfiction #Lucilleproblems (edited) 7y

I wanted to read this series because I've become interested in the Civil War era. It's an excellent book, and very timely. Often we can only see the division and hear the differences between ourselves, but we need to remain united as human beings.

I‘ve been terrible with the photo challenges of late, but I certainly need to participate in the #150PnPCoverParty ! #Money helps with social standing, naturally. While the tagged book delves into so many issues and complications, it‘s a story of two well-to-do families and the bond that grows between them before the US Civil War. First in the epic trilogy.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved the miniseries. And I was just talking about these books to someone else the other day. 7y
CrowCAH I have been meaning to read this book! I haven‘t even seen the miniseries like @Riveted_Reader_Melissa 7y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle Yes, the first teen (tween) Swayze crush for everyone of a certain age. 😉 Only 70‘s & 80‘s children will understand. 7y
LeahBergen Awesome pick. I read this book years ago. 👌🏼 7y
Zelma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle omg, yes! That miniseries was 🔥 and awakened new feelings in a very young me. I remember the horrid embarrassment of watching it with my parents and a certain steamy scene prompted me to cover my eyes after they asked if it was past my bedtime. But I refused to leave the room; this was appointment tv! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma In the ruins of the old house/church/whatever it was. 🙈. I‘m just randomly guessing here of course.... (edited) 7y
Zelma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I honestly don‘t remember. I just remember hit Patrick Swayze and a silky slip being taken off the love interest. *fanning myself* 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma 😂👍. Young teens hearts a flutter, and the cause of my early romance reading years I‘m sure. 7y
Andrew65 I remember the mini series but never read the book. 7y
Librarybelle @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma The scene at the old church (?) was quite steamy! 7y
Librarybelle @Andrew65 It‘s really good, and a chunkster. 7y
Andrew65 @Librarybelle I will add it to my Chunkster list 👍😁 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Andrew65 😂The more chunksters you finish the more you‘ll find. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle I bet the books are even stranger to read now, the further I got from the original miniseries the more sordid and twisted they became as I remember, but that was like 20-30 years ago. I wonder if my older self would find them less shocking or more shocking now that I actually have some life experience. 7y
Andrew65 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Certainly working out that way! 🙄 7y
Librarybelle @Riveted_Reader_Melissa If I recall, there some major differences between the books and the miniseries. The third book, especially. It‘s been awhile since I read them too, but I do remember some graphic steamy scenes. That is interesting...how different would my perception be now than what it was 20+ years ago?? 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma It doesn‘t hurt that they cast the miniseries very well....Patrick Swayze, Jonathan Frakes, Genie Francis, Leslie Ann Down, Kristie Alley they picked heavily in the soap stars as I remember. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle That‘s Exactly what I was thinking, the miniseries was steamy, the books, especially by the third where even more so, no toning down for TV. And I remembered thinking some of it, as I read it in high school was over-the-too shocking to me then. And I wonder, would it now be nothing or more like, yay that was really crazy writing. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle Thanks for the great dishy memories by that way😂 7y
Librarybelle You are so welcome, @Riveted_Reader_Melissa ! 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma and @Librarybelle I just looked and the first TV miniseries was released in Nov 1985, no wonder I was aghast, I was 12! 😂🤣😂🤣 guess I should be glad I waited to HS to read them.🙈 7y
Librarybelle @Zelma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I saw the miniseries in re-run on cable in the ‘90s. I was in the 8th grade! My parents would have flipped had they known all of the stuff going on. So, I actually started reading the books in 8th grade too. 😆 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Although I will say I did learn something, as I mentioned earlier I was just talking about this series with someone else. We read Passing by Nella Larsen for a group read last month and one of the discussions was, had we heard of Passing before, and in what context. I first remember it from North and South, so as dishy as it was I still learned about slavery, passing, and the abolition movement. So the miniseries was still educational. 👍 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Librarybelle The 8th grade...So I was actually sheltered at 12😂. I don‘t think I read them until 10th grade. (edited) 7y
Librarybelle @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yes! For all the steamy scenes, Jakes did a mountain of research. Lots of historical info. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Andrew65 Hahahaha! You found them on YouTube! Somehow I never thought to even look there, in my mind they are always on VHS that we recorded off of TV and labeled ourselves 7y
Librarybelle Oh my, @Andrew65 ! That is hilarious they‘re on YouTube! What fun! 7y
Zelma @Librarybelle @Riveted_Reader_Melissa imagine watching them with your parents every night. We were hooked and my folks didn‘t realize how steamy they‘d be. 😳😂 I think I see a rewatch in my future. My library has the DVDs. 😃 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma Andrew posted a link above, you can watch them on YouTube. 👍 Yes, we recorded them and then watched them together, so I know exactly what you mean. My mom was a huge Swayze fan so we rewatched them and later Dirty Dancing from VHS many times after. It‘s funny, I was just re-watching Dirty Dancing the other day and thinking I don‘t think that movie would get made today, it‘s class issues and abortion plot probably would have gotten it... 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...more boycotts than cult classic status if it came out today. How bizarre and sad is that? (edited) 7y
Zelma @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I completely agree regarding Dirty Dancing. Movies had more freedom in the past. I read that the biggest reason is that movie studios are more focused on the global market and therefore can‘t/won‘t make nuanced movies anymore. They need to appeal to a wide audience and multiple languages. 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @Zelma Probably explains why we are reading more, and why we are so excited to see a rare unique movie come out (like Get Out) 7y

1. I've had a few reading slumps over the years, whether due to work commitments or some dark periods in my life.
2. The tagged book got me out of one of these slumps.
3. I pick up one of MC Beaton's mystery series
4. Barnes and Noble, local mystery bookstore, and, thanks to Litsy, Book Outlet
5. Nancy Drew

I was obsessed with this series in high school. One evening, I caught a rerun of the 1980s miniseries, and I was hooked. Being the bookworm that I am (even back then), I found out it was a book first. Jakes is a marvelous storyteller - packed with history (US Civil War era) and steamy romance, I easily escape to a different place and time. This is the first in the North and South trilogy, and my favorite. Very long read, but worth it. #35bookparty
