Necronomicon
Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H.P. Lovecraft | Stephen Jones, H. P. Lovecraft, Les Edwards
WIKIPEDIA says: 'H.P. Lovecraft's reputation has grown tremendously over the decades, and he is now commonly regarded as one of the most important horror writers of the 20th century, exerting an influence that is widespread, though often indirect.' H.P. Lovecraft's tales of the tentacled Elder God Cthulhu and his pantheon of alien deities were initially written for the pulp magazines of the 1920s and '30s. These astonishing tales blend elements of horror, science fiction and cosmic terror that are as powerful today as they were when they were first published. This handsome leatherbound tome collects together the very best of Lovecraft's tales of terror, including the complete Cthulhu Mythos cycle, just the way they were originally published. It will introduce a whole new generation of readers to Lovecraft's fiction, as well as being a must-buy for those fans who want all his work in a single, definitive, highly attractive volume.

Whosoever speaketh of Cthulhu shall remember that he but seemeth dead; he sleeps, and yet he does not sleep; he has died, and yet he is not dead; asleep and dead though he is, he shall rise again. Again, it should be shown that: That is not dead which can eternal lie, And with strange eons even death may die.

So I opened up my bag and @hannah-leeloo may have hidden something for me to find thank you very very much in love with this bool

Excellent collection of Lovecraft's stories, you've got most of his best ones in this collection; but it's such a big and somewhat cumbersome book.

My favourite stories in Necronomicon were..

'The Rats in the Walls'
'The Tomb'
'The Dunwich Horror'
'The Shunned House'
'At the Mountains of Madness'

Bookwomble I've got the Conan volume in this edition. They're nice books, but weighty tomes, as you say. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Bookwomble I know exactly the one you mean, I've never read any of the Conan stuff though; how is it? 4y
Bookwomble Howard wrote for the same magazines as Lovecraft, the two of them corresponded, swapping ideas & using each others characters. So a lot of Howard's horror elements will feel familiar, as they are often Lovecraftian. He differs in the character of his protagonists, nearly always Herculean types. There's a strong current of social, even racial, Darwinism underlying his work, but he's not pointedly racist like Lovecraft & does have a few ... 4y

Cathythoughts Looks like a lovely bound book to me 💫 4y
Bookwomble sympathetic non-white characters, and wasn't hung up on racial purity. That said, the language & attitude are of its time, particularly in these restored Commemorative volumes. So, all that said, I do like the stories, which defined the Sword and Sorcery genre, with a coherent fantasy history to hold the individual tales together. 4y
TheNeverendingTBR @Bookwomble Interesting, I'll need to look into it; when I think of Conan - i just think about greased up Schwarzenegger in wooly underwear wielding a sword in the films 😂 but thanks Mike, I guess there is more to it.. 4y
Bookwomble Yeah, Arnie didn't really do Conan the justice he deserved, though I still like the campiness of those films, like Adam West's Batman. Howard's Solomon Kane stories are also fantastic, and I'd recommend the film adaptation, which is on Netflix. 4y
truthinfiction What a beautiful edition! 4y

At 896 pages, this is a big book. A collection of horror short stories, novellas and novels.

I've read a big chunk of it, I read a bit then leave it for a while and go back to it; what I've read do far I've liked.

His writing style is different to anyone I've read, first he uses a lot of obscure words; I've got to sit with a dictionary. 😂 ...but also because his writing is more imagery based and less about characters.

MStew Love that book, there is a matching book to go with it i used to see it at nobles🤓😚 6y
jmofo In high school, a teacher told me I wrote like Lovecraft (I don‘t really, I was just an anxious kid) so when I finally got around to reading Lovecraft many years later, it coincided with the release of one of my favorite local band‘s LP. The album and his writing are now forever associated for me. The band‘s named Land Lines and the album‘s The Natural World. 6y

Trollkonstnaren I have read few stories from there. They are brilliant - with one negative remark: they are short. Some of them felt like they ended too soon. Anyway, I really should read tbe whole book someday. 6y
Bookwomble @Trollkonstnaren "At the Mountains of Madness" and "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" are novel length, if perhaps short ones by the standards of present-day multi-volume tomes. The stories of Randolph Carter's journeys in the Dreamlands are well-enough connected to form a reasonably coherent narrative, I think. 6y

What is scarier? The unknown or knowing too much? The father of cosmic horror, Lovecraft tells us how insignificantly little and blissfully ignorant we are. He describes perfectly the dreadful, loneliness and the ugly. #horror

First post, a kind of presentation: hello, I'm Alessia in childhood a big reader, not so big currently for times reasons. But I'm recovering. This is my current reading, and I'm in love with the style of writing of Lovecraft. Generally I read historical or political essays, fantasy/fantascientific novels, and I'm a lover of the classics.

Wow, this is a chunker! It's a little over 800 pages, and it contains most of H.P.L's most well known stories and a few poems. I wouldn't recommend this collection to anyone who is just starting to get into Lovecraft. I would suggest that you start with a smaller volume or of you have the Serial Reader app, read the stories available there. His style takes some getting used to👇

alexbaysinger But if you're a fan of H.P.L., this is a must have collection. 7y

Loved it. Although some may say Lovecraft goes purple with prose, the serious reader will find even his most grotesque insinuations to be poetic and beautiful. Listening to the audio of this took me to another world.

I'm 1/3 of the way thru the audio for Necronomicon. It's an interesting listen. I can see why he's such a historical force in horror/fantasy, but I can also see why he's heavily criticized for his racism (it's a little much even for his time). Super excited for the lit themed brewery though!!

BookishFeminist This looks like a lot of fun! Enjoy! 🍻 8y
