The French Girl
The French Girl | Lexie Elliott
One woman becomes trapped in the tangled bonds of friendship in an exhilarating debut novel of psychological suspense for fans of Fiona Barton, Clare Mackintosh, and Ruth Ware. We all have our secrets... They were six university students from Oxford--friends and sometimes more than friends--spending an idyllic week together in a French farmhouse. It was supposed to be the perfect summer getaway...until they met Severine, the girl next door. For Kate Channing, Severine was an unwelcome presence, her inscrutable beauty undermining the close-knit group's loyalties amid the already simmering tensions. And after a huge altercation on the last night of the holiday, Kate knew nothing would ever be the same. There are some things you can't forgive. And there are some people you can't forget...like Severine, who was never seen again. Now, a decade later, the case is reopened when Severine's body is found in the well behind the farmhouse. Questioned along with her friends, Kate stands to lose everything she's worked so hard to achieve as suspicion mounts around her. Desperate to resolve her own shifting memories and fearful she will be forever bound to the woman whose presence still haunts her, Kate finds herself buried under layers of deception with no one to set her free...

I‘m on the fence on how to rate this book...it was quite well written and not bad but it just kinda lost me in the end. The ending was just like “oh ok”. For the whole focal point of the story to not be resolved in a satisfactorily way just kind of left me feeling unfulfilled. I‘d definitely give the author another chance as I did enjoy her writing style.

Book club made me do it! That‘s what I would call this picture, if it were a work of art. Both of these books were pitched at my book club at some point. They didn‘t end up being our picks but they both sounded really interesting to me so I picked up secondhand copies afterwards!

If you are in a book club, how do you go about picking the book you read each month?

I finished. And by finished I mean At 57% I just needed to know who did it so I skimmed the last two chapters. If you‘re a person who likes character development vs plot development in your mysteries and have a preference for slower paced mysteries this will probably work for you. #Mysteries #TheFrenchGirl

The body of a young woman, that went missing after a weekend away to France, turns up 10 years later. Enjoyed this as a murder mystery not the psychological thriller it was purported to be. Fun summer/beach read. ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ 1/2

I enjoyed this - the writing flows nicely, the characters are well fleshed out and the pace is good, though i was expecting a more unexpected outcome (so in a way, it was unexpectedly expected?) Anyway, a good read!

I could not get into this book what so ever. 😤 I was about 40% into it, and I had no interest whatsoever. Since it‘s a Readathon, I want to keep the momentum, not slow it down... so I bailed. Oh well! Better luck with the next book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Clwojick @Leftcoastzen is it weird that I feel bad when I can‘t get into a book? Lol. I hate bailing, but I generally give myself 100pages, or 25% then I bail if I have absolutely no interest. 📚 5y

This felt like a promising read - a group of friends are forced to revisit a holiday ten years in the past where a French girl they met was later found dead - as the investigation is reopened and they‘re suspects, their inner anxieties and secrets surface. Their relationships are put under the microscope and betrayals are revealed. The ending was very anticlimactic and overall I was underwhelmed. Would recommend only if you‘re new to the genre.

Beautifully written and well paced literary psychological thriller. It‘s one of those slowly unravelling types of story where little pieces of information are fed to the reader like a lure, so that you are awaiting eagerly to learn what happens next. Although I had my suspicions, I had no idea how it would end. It was an unusual conclusion but justice was served even if a little ambiguously! A very enjoyable mystery.

I could not put It down! 10 years after a trip to France that ended with the breakup of a relationship & the disappearance of a French girl the police find the body & reopen the case. What really happened on that long ago trip? Was it really as they remembered or did something sinister happen? Their friendship, their businesses, & even their lives may be at risk.
Thank you to NetGalley & the publisher for providing an ARC for my honest review.

Well, this book certainly had me on the edge of my seat, wondering what happened to Severine, the French girl. It was fast-paced and that‘s exactly what I hoped for. My one problem is that when the truth came out, the French officer seemed to drop the whole case so quickly that it didn‘t seem quite right. He was so intent on getting to the bottom of the case and then nothing. But it was a thrilling read and a love story that I quite enjoyed!

Some novels are like rafting on a fast moving river. You are carried along through twists and turns, exhilarated, and perched on the end of your seat until the end. The French Girl is not such a novel. I compare the experience more to a leisurely float on a lazy river to a destination unknown. Peacefully and steadily moving along until its conclusion.

Pacing like Girl on the Train, echoes of the group of Secret History but in line with the writing style of Mary Kubica.

I think I like Kate (MC) but there was a bit too much inner questioning (I detest that about this genre) but the others don't feel fleshed out. I would have approved of making the book longer. Hard for me to believe the strength of the bonds between the group, and hard to care.

Did Elliott just learn the word "nonplussed"? ?

bobregina I hate when they keep repeating the same word 🤦‍♀️ 6y
mrozzz @bobregina the repetition was crazy! Wish I was keeping track. 6y
