The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle | Stuart Turton
A brilliantly original high concept murder mystery from a fantastic new talent: Gosford Park meets Inception, by way of Agatha Christie 'Somebody's going to be murdered at the ball tonight. It won't appear to be a murder and so the murderer won't be caught. Rectify that injustice and I'll show you the way out.' It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed. But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot. The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath...

Book 1 of #newyearwhodis - The MC has eight days to solve Evelyn Hardcastle‘s murder and each day he will be in the body of a different person.

I really enjoyed this original murder mystery. There is a lot going on and I spent a lot of time trying to puzzle everything out. It definitely keeps you guessing. The setting of Blackheath house created the perfect atmosphere and the characters are well developed.

Finished January 7.

This book was a hard one for me to rate. I give the story 5 stars because it was genius and complicated and I can‘t even fathom how the author wrote it. On the other hand I want to give it 3 stars because it was almost too complicated. So many characters and back and forth between days and characters and confusion. I also took a long time to read it because it‘s not a book you can pick up and read a chapter or two then put down. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really enjoyed this book even though at times the pieces were a hard fit. The story lags 2/3 through, but with its cool take on time travel, Agatha mixology and Downton Abbey charm (like the dust cover aptly summarizes)- there was enough here that kept me trapped in the story. Good read.

This is the kind of story you have to be all in for—it‘s like being stuck in a Downton Abbey-themed mystery night purgatory. Ish. The setting of Blackheath is arguably the most compelling character, a spiderweb that holds inexplicable power over the entire cast. I didn‘t try to count all 7 1/2 deaths or work out all the devilishly mind-bending plot threads; I just plunged in head-first, without any bearings, like the MC. It‘s a hell of a ride!

Christmas #bookhaul! I am so proud of my husband for his selection of the tagged book. He asked me for a list, and the top three were all from that list, but the bottom book he picked out because he thought it sounded like something I‘d like. And he was right—it was already on several to-read lists of mine, just not on the list I gave him!

Zelma Nicely done! 👏 I love surprise books that fit my taste. 1mo

This is one example of the many, many uses of simile in this book. I can't decide if it makes the author brilliant or if it makes him a hack or if it makes me a terrible judge of what good writing is. I suspect the fault lies with me. But seriously, this sounds like something from the Bulwer-Lytton contest. (Mind you I can't stop reading as I am enjoying it.)

Lindy I tend to have limited tolerance for similes, but this one strikes me as memorable. 🧈 1mo

Although the complexity and mystery kept me reading until the end, overall I wasn‘t a big fan of this book. There were too many loose ends, too much melodrama, and I felt like the author took so many liberties. It was a pretty good book club pick, but I wouldn‘t have read it otherwise.

Why would it be 7 deaths in the UK and 7 1/2 in the US?

Karkar Good question! I was wondering that too. 1mo
hissingpotatoes I think it's because The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo came out around the same time and the publisher thought consumers would confuse the two books. 1mo

hissingpotatoes @Sace Yeah I thought having two titles for the same book would actually be more confusing lol. 1mo
Sace @Prairiegirl_reading I'm really enjoying the death of Evelyn. I haven't read about Evelyn's husbands... Yet 😁 1mo

Sace @Balibee146 I didn't even know there were two titles for that one! 1mo
Bookzombie @Balibee146 I think that had something to do with how we pronounce letters/words in different ways. I think US is NOS4A2 and UK is NOS4R2, because it‘s supposed to sound like Nosferatu. 1mo

veritysalter I enjoyed it, I think once you got the gist of what was happening to the main character, it was easier. The uncertainty at the beginning makes you more empathetic to him and his situation. 1mo

julesG Air plants are fun. I have one in the bathroom. Takes care of itself. 😁 And I have two different Chinese money plants. One with small and one with larger leaves. Spending the morning with this library book and I don't know what to say. I like it, but at the same time I resent it. I don't know how I feel about an author leaving me in the dark and confusing me just so I'll keep reading. At the same time I love the feeling of this confusion and I'm laughing at my stubborn refusal to quit.

Tamra I was hoping to listen to this on audio, but it sounds like that wouldn‘t be a good format. 1mo
ElizaMarie I did this as a half read half listen to (I do that sometimes since I have a physical copy but then I commute so I try to download it if its available through Libby too.) I don't know what format was better. I didn't hate this book but then again I didn't love it. It was one of those “ehh“. I get how the stubbornness takes over! So... No real advice more just a “I hear you!“ type of comment there! 1mo
Sace @Tamra I think it would still work as an audio. 1mo
See All 7 Comments
Sace @ElizaMarie 🤣 I think I'm willing to keep going and at the same time I'm worried it might feel like a wasted effort at then end. 1mo
ElizaMarie I kinda felt that way. But it didn‘t take me long to finish it. So not really “wasted time” also since I had heard so much about it I wanted to know what it‘s about... 1mo
Hooked_on_books I enjoyed it, but it took a loooong time to come together. And @Tamra the audio definitely works—you just have to give it the time to do so! Listening for longer stretches really helped with this one. 1mo
Sace @Hooked_on_books tbh I'm guilty of not giving it the time it deserves. 1mo

This book kept me guessing! Aiden has 8 days to solve a murder, and each morning he wakes up in a different body to relive the same day. After 8 different hosts, he has to uncover the truth - who killed Evelyn Hardcastle? The answer, however, is tangled with corrupt characters, other murders, and questionable allies. A mix between Clue and Agatha Christie - I couldn‘t put it down! You really have to pay attention while reading, but it‘s worth it.

This is quite an unusual concept and I have to admit that I found it a bit difficult to follow, particularly in the beginning. The jumping around between hosts and times/days was playing with my head and I had to really concentrate…hard! That being said, it was good. I enjoyed the whole book and was sorry when I finished it.

You don't realize it's weird in the beginning because it's actually quite fun at first.
But, halfway through you're going to speed up the audio because you're bored now
And then you're going to get to the end and be like....
