Aisha Saeed's middle-grade debut tells the compelling story of a girl's fight to regain her life and dreams after being forced into indentured servitude. Life is quiet and ordinary in Amal's Pakistani village, but she had no complaints, and besides, she's busy pursuing her dream of becoming a teacher one day. Her dreams are temporarily dashed when--as the eldest daughter--she must stay home from school to take care of her siblings. Amal is upset, but she doesn't lose hope and finds ways to continue learning. Then the unimaginable happens--after an accidental run-in with the son of her village's corrupt landlord, Amal must work as his family's servant to pay off her own family's debt. Life at the opulent Khan estate is full of heartbreak and struggle for Amal--especially when she inadvertently makes an enemy of a girl named Nabila. Most troubling, though, is Amal's growing awareness of the Khans' nefarious dealings. When it becomes clear just how far they will go to protect their interests, Amal realizes she will have to find a way to work with others if they are ever to exact change in a cruel status quo, and if Amal is ever to achieve her dreams.

This book was lovely. A hard story to read - Amal's childhood in Pakistan is turned upside down when she mouths back at someone at the market. Her father owes this man a considerable amount of money, and the man takes her as an indentured servant to repay the debt. She finds a found family in the other indentured servants, but that doesn't help the ache from missing her family. Books also become a main theme. Would recommend

This book is a middle grade story, about a girl named Amal who's life drastically changed when she spoke against a powerful local landlord who crushed her dreams in an instant. This book was incredibly beautiful and I loved it more than I expected I would. It's simple and moving at the same time teaching the lessons we often tend to forget, of courage, and determination and resilience. Also the cover art is stunning.

This middle grade story, though fictional, was inspired by Malala Yousafzai and other girls who take a stand against inequality. Simple enough for young readers, it brings awareness to the oppression of girls and women in Pakistan. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #oregonbattleofthebooks

I don't often read middle grade books. I picked this up to fulfill a reading prompt for a middle grade book not set in the US or UK. Compelling and interesting story set in Pakistan. Well worth the read.

I loved this! The audiobook wasn‘t doing it for me, but switching to the ebook was just what I needed. What a great story about a Pakistani girl who talks back to the wrong person and is forced to become an indentured servant to the local landlord. It‘s about relationships and courage. Highly recommend!

Yes! Loved it. Amal matters. Indentured servitude matters. Education for girls matters. “Brave girls are all over the world” Aisha Saeed wrote in the authors note, and I can‘t agree more.

2nd #middlegrademarch pick, for the prompt to read a book set in another country. Sometimes MG is just what you need. This was quick & enjoyable, & I really liked Amal. She‘s brave & big-hearted, but still a kid who is unsure of herself & makes some bad impulsive choices. Saeed did well to show the truth of Amal‘s situation of servitude w/o seeming hopeless. Did think the dialogue was too grownup at times, & it wrapped up a bit too easily. 3/5 ⭐️

Hi to Group B for the next round of Litsy Markup Postal Book Club! I took 2 rounds off and am psyched to get back into it. #lmpbc

I‘m starting to think about which book to do. How do you feel about these 3 books? Any that you haven‘t read but want to? @LibrarianRyan @MissAimz_55 @amber_ldsmom

LiteraryinLawrence @LibrarianRyan @MissAimz_55 @amber_ldsmom Hey #lmpbc friends. I hope you‘re holding up ok. I‘m feeling unsure about going ahead with the book club on schedule. To be honest, I don‘t like the idea of going out to the post office. Is anyone else feeling like now isn‘t the right time to start this? 4y
LibrarianRyan @LiteraryinLititz I have mine packaged but have not been to the post office yet. We have a kiosk post office so I don‘t have to actually see anyone. But if you want to hold off that is okay, I understand. 4y
amber_ldsmom I was going to weigh mine on my kitchen scale, pay for postage online, and print the label. Of course, we understand if you want to hold off, though. 4y
LiteraryinLawrence @amber_ldsmom @LibrarianRyan @MissAimz_55 Thanks for being understanding, guys. I‘d like to hold off. If the 3 of you want to continue on with a 3-person group, I fully support that. 💜 4y
amber_ldsmom @LibrarianRyan @MissAimz_55 So are we going to hold off or continue with three? 4y
LibrarianRyan @amber_ldsmom mine is packaged and ready to go so I am fine continuing. 4y

Middle-grade about a bright young girl in Pakistan who is attempting to get an education and go to college but due to unpaid debts her life veers off course and she must figure out a way to overcome these circumstances. Good introduction to the obstacles many around the world and particularly girls face in obtaining even a basic education. #booked2019 #diversemiddlegrade

Amal helps her mother, and loves attending school in Pakistan. Some day she plans to attend university. On a trip to the market all her plans are suddenly upended when the vicious village landlord is upset by her words after almost running her over. In anger he recalls her family‘s debt and she‘s forced into indentured servitude.

Heartbreaking, powerful, and ultimately hopeful.

This middle grades book was an enjoyable, eye-opening read. I wish books like this had existed when I was 11 years old or so. The main character is a smart, strong young Pakistani girl with big dreams. When her dreams are shattered by indentured servitude, she learns of a whole other world and realizes too late that she took her life and family for granted. I definitely recommend this book, it would be good middle school reading material.

It was an interesting and eye-opening look into life in a small Pakistani village including indentured servitude, male children still being seen as more desirable and the powerful ruling those with less. I'm glad I read it because I was hesitant to add it to the school collection, but definitely will now. #mgbuddyread

Readingismyescape I enjoyed Amal‘s perseverance and curiosity. Definitely worth adding to a collection. 5y
Lmstraubie @Readingismyescape I'm a Librarian in a K-4 library so I find middle grade tricky. A lot of books seem geared towards 5th and up. This one is right on target for my 3rd & 4th graders. 5y
