Inside the O'Briens
Inside the O'Briens | Lisa Genova
The breathtaking new novel from the author of STILL ALICE, now adapted into an Academy Award-winning film starring Julianne Moore. Joe O'Brien is a Boston cop; his physical stamina and methodical mind have seen him through decades policing the city streets, while raising a family with his wife Rosie. When he starts making uncharacteristic errors, he attributes them to stress. Finally, he agrees to see a doctor and is handed a terrifying, unexpected diagnosis: Huntington's disease. Not only is Joe's life set to change beyond recognition, but each of his four grown children has a fifty-fifty chance of inheriting the disease. Observing her potential future play out in his escalating symptoms, his pretty yoga teacher daughter Katie wrestles with how to make the most of the here and now, and how to care for her dad who is, inside, always an O'Brien. Praise for Inside the O'Briens: 'I urge you to read this book. The story is so uplifting and redeeming that it fills you with hope ... Quite simply brilliant' Judy Finnigan 'Devastating. We climb into the hearts of a normal, chaotic, loving family. A story about the resilience of love in the face of a tragic, inevitable fate' Julie Cohen, author of Dear Thing

Meet the O'Briens. There's Rosie and Joe plus their four adult children. JJ, Patrick, Meghan and Katie. Each character is individual and vibrant, the sibling relationships are hilarious and heartbreaking, the parent / children dynamics are raw, real, relatable.

Genova took me on a journey of science with well thought out characters which is assessable to my non medically trained brain and all the while breaking my heart.

An exceptional book.

#reread 1st #audiobook read

I love that Genova ensures that her portrayals are medically correct for the diseases she highlights. And you can‘t help but sympathize with the O‘Briens, a family who discovers they have Huntington‘s when Dad is diagnosed. That said, it was more obvious in the audiobook that she tells rather than shows in her writing if that makes sense. The narrator is good but not exceptional. Still an enthusiastic pick, though!

Cinfhen This was a so-so for me on my first read. Not sure id want to re-read. Glad you enjoyed 😁 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I really appreciate the accuracy of her books, and she‘s good and making me care about her characters, so I enjoy that. 👍🏻 3y
Amiable I love Lisa Genova‘s books —this is one of my favorites of hers. I think because I‘ve lived in Boston and I know people just like this family. It felt very real to me. 3y
Megabooks @Amiable me too! Her characters are spot on. You can tell she really thinks about how to craft them. 3y

Okay, why. Why did it have to end like that? 🤦‍♀️
Excellent book about a family that has to deal with the devastating diagnosis of Huntington's Disease. Joe, a 43 yr old Boston police officer, has to come to terms with what this disease will do to his mind and body. How this affects him and their family is heart wrenching. Each of their 4 adult children have to decide if they want to find out if they also have the disease. Eye-opening story. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

LiteraryinPA I feel like all of Genova‘s books are like this: they sound really intriguing but are about topics of mortality that I rarely feel up to immersing myself in. … wow, that was a weirdly constructed sentence. But hopefully you know what I mean! 3y
ItsAnotherJen @LiteraryinLawrence I totally get it! I kept putting off reading this one because it sounded sad and heavy. I feel that way about a lot of Jodi Picoult's books too, but then I'm always glad when I do read them. They aren't light reads, but you get a lot from them if you are in the right mood to tackle them. Great authors, both of them 3y

Book 61

I listened to Inside the O'Brien's by Lisa Genova, a novel about a family coming to terms with a diagnosis of Huntington's Disease. Once again Genova is masterful at bringing disease to life; her novels build both awareness and comprehensive compassion. Her characters could be more dynamic and less of a stereotype, but this was an engaging book and recommendable. The end was a little disappointing, as well. 3.5 stars

Starbucks dropped their holiday drinks today. It was pandemonium. It took 50 minutes for my mobile order, and they were out of the reusable cups and holiday cups, BUT I got my chestnut praline latte and that‘s all that matters! Those poor Sbux employees.

Man can Lisa Genova research and write a book!! As a doctor/scientist, I appreciate thorough research. Not only does this book humanize Huntington‘s Disease, it also presents an honest picture of what it‘s like for an individual and their family. The choice to find out if an adult child is gene positive and family planning are also explored. 5⭐️ 🔽

Megabooks This book only briefly touches on suicide/euthanasia, and the MC ultimately chooses life. As I said in an earlier post, I do believe in the right of the individual to choose euthanasia with terminal illness. Obviously, this is still controversial. (edited) 5y

Continuing my TBR project:
This is one the oldest selection on my TBR list - Originally added October 3, 2015.

Authentic, heart-breaking and informative story about a family in Boston that is plagued with Huntington‘s Disease. I‘ve heard about HD on a few television medical dramas but had absolutely no idea how devastating this disease is or how it runs in families. I loved this novel and all its memorable characters!

Definitely not her best. While I imagine her portrayal of Huntington‘s Disease is deadly accurate, I found the rest of the book to be a bit tedious. Four adult kids (who all still live at home?!?!) trying to decide whether or not to find out if they carry the gene that will give them HD. I did learn a lot about this horrific disease, but overall was a bit disappointed.

tammysue I agree with everything, a so-so for me too. 6y

Wow! This was so good! In addition to learning about Huntington‘s Disease (which is quite rare), Genova did an amazing job, I thought, of bringing the O‘Brien family to life. I loved the Sunday dinners with the family and all their interactions. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin The book followed Joe and Katie, and how they each dealt with Huntington‘s, so we got to see how Joe was dealing with living with it, and how Katie was trying to deal with her father having it, and how it would potentially affect her and her new relationship, and her struggle to decide if she wanted to know if she carried the gene or not. This will make my favourites this year. 6y

Bklover Still Alice was the first of hers I read. It definitely was the most personally terrifying- I know what you mean about being petrified by Alzheimer‘s. What a horrible disease! 6y
TheBookgeekFrau @Bklover Yeah, the thought of losing who you are and all you've experienced to *become* is just too scary to contemplate; never mind what it does to one's loved ones. Someday I may gather my courage and give it a go; I've heard good things about it as far as story goes. 6y

This book was smack in my wheelhouse--I've lived in Boston, so I'm familiar with the locations and the people and the dialect and the fanatical obsession with sports. The characters were real people to me; Genova did a great job making them all come alive. I laughed in parts and teared up in others. Genova was also very adept at explaining Huntington's Disease in layman's terms without using overly technical language.

Second book club book of the month, only available on audiobook from the library which is a bummer. Was a nice portrait of the ethical questions and hardship faced by those with huntington's or other genetic diseases. Good read in these times of DNA mail in testing. Some characters and plot bits were overly convenient, but did at least add something to the ethics discussion.

#UnpopularOpinion time, but I found this to be heavy-handed and uninspired. Yes, it‘s good to educate people about Huntington‘s, but if you‘re writing a novel you also need something else. Plot? Believable characters? Gorgeous prose? Something! Narrator was pretty good (although if I had to hear him say “HD, HD, HD” one more time I might have screamed) but he couldn‘t save the material.

Lcsmcat One more rant and then I‘ll move on with my life. She kept comparing the sisters‘ feet and saying the dancer‘s feet were prettier than the yoga instructor! Has she ever SEEN a ballerina‘s feet! 7y
ValerieAndBooks What!! My daughter is 19 and a ballet dancer (college dance major) and I cringe when I look at her feet 😩 ! But the condition they‘re in doesn‘t stop her. (edited) 7y
Lcsmcat @ValerieAndBooks Exactly! My sister and my daughter both danced on pointe, so that mistake just jumped out at me. 7y

An important and sad book. It's weird to say I enjoyed a story when it's about something as serious as Huntington's Disease, but this was an engrossing and personal look at one family's experience with this disease. I couldn't help but become invested in the O'Briens lives and I learned a lot about this disease that I was unfamiliar with. ❤
